An official from Kurdish administration in Arbil announced that there
will be local elections
in a number of municipalities in the KDP region in May. KDP minister
responsible for
municipalities and tourism, Mamun Brifkani, said that preparations
have begun for elections
in Arbil, Duhok, and other areas in the KDP region and the necessary
legal procedures for
elections of the ministers council had been completed.
He added "These elections will take place next month. Elections will
be held on the
basis of name lists, not party. Just as this is a better election method,
it is at the same time
more democratic."
KDP administration is planning on establishing an Elections High Board
for the elections.
There will also be human rights and humanitarian assistance organizations,
lawyers and
judges, and some observers present to assures that elections are held
fairly. A call will be
made to local representatives of these groups to observe elections
