parliamentary speaker asking for all prisoners to be included in the
amnesty bill

Istanbul - Turkish Daily News
Different views and proposals regarding the amnesty bill continue to
come from all
sections of society. The People's Democracy Party (HADEP) was the latest
to join the
debate. The party's Istanbul chairman, Dogan Erbas, who made a speech
in the name of
HADEP members who met in front of Galatasaray Post Office, said, "All
arrested and
convicted people should be released under the amnesty bill."
The group, consisting of some 30 people, met with wide security measures
in front of the
post office. The group wanted to make a press statement and negotiated
to this end with
the police. They were finally allowed to make a statement on the condition
that they did
not chant slogans. In his speech Erbas called for the amnesty law to
be enacted as soon
as possible. Stating that the bill should include all arrested and
convicted prisoners,
Erbas said: "We at HADEP believe that more than 70,000 prisoners should
be released.
The amnesty bill should passed in the interests of internal peace.
An amnesty bill which
does not include political prisoners cannot be an answer to the real
needs of society. We
call on all political parties, and the ruling parties in particular,
as well as the public, to be
more sensitive on this issue."
The HADEP members forwarded their demand for an amnesty for all prisoners
to
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and the
parliamentary
speaker.
