NEN
Nen is a special power hidden inside every human being. But not everybody knows how to use them, and those who are able to use them are considered special. One can awaken their nen either gradually or in a sudden way.
Nen is the ability to control the Aura that passes through in and out of the body and use it according to one's will. People have different kinds of nen, may it be embodying, strengthening, etc. But there are a few rare ones who are able to use all different kinds of nen, from which percent depends upon the strength of the nen user. Kurapika is an example of this, wherein he is able to use all nen types in their maximum percents when his eyes turn red.
AURA
Aura is the power that comes in and out of the body in small amounts. But through the ability to use nen, aura can be controlled and can be used according to the wielder's will. But in order to control this aura, one has to learn how to use Ren.
REN
Ren is needed to increase the flow of aura inside the body. It allows someone to absorb his own aura so he can be able to control it.
GYOU
I high form of Ren that allows the person to see more things invisible to the naked eye by concentrating their nen on the eyes. Example is the time when Gon and Killua used Gyou to look for artifacts with a high nen-concentration.
EN
The use of En can be somehow comparable to Gyou, except that it leans more on territories. Let me give an example. Zeno once used his En to surround the building where the auction will be held to find Kuroro. The stronger the person, the larger the En's territory. One will be more sensitive to the activities inside the given territory compared to a place without the En.
TEN
Ten is the opposite of Ren. It decreases the flow of aura out of the body, thus storing it inside. This can be used to increase defense from physical attacks and can slow down the process of aging.
SHU
A high form of Ten that allows one's aura to flow on an object to strengthen it. Nen will be wrapped around a certain object to make it stronger. Example is the way Hisoka makes his cards sharper by letting his nen flow around them. Another was when Master Wing used a torn piece of paper to cut through glass.
ZETSU
Zetsu is the ability to disable Ten. This stops the flow of aura all in all. This is mostly used when spying wherein your aura won't be detected by other people who use nen. Example of this is when Gon and Killua were spying on Machi and Nobunaga I think, wherein they used Zetsu so they wouldn't detected.
IN
A very difficult form of Zetsu. It makes Zetsu even more powerful by making everything invisible to someone who uses nen. Example, Kurapika can hide himself, and hide his nen-made weapon by using this form of nen, even if he decides to use it.
KOU
A high form of Ren, Ten, Zetsu, Hatsu and Gyou put together. It lets one concetrate his nen on one body part to strengthen it. Mostly used by Gon whenever he punches, wherein he concentrates his nen in his fist to pack a more powerful punch.
HATSU
Hatsu is the ability to control the aura. This is a main ability that vary from one person to another. It is divided into 6 main types:
Kyouka (Strengthening)
- Strengthens any object, usually one paart of the body to pack more strength in a blow than usual. Ex: Gon, Leorio, Ubougin
Sousaka (Control)
- The ability to control objects, livingg or non-living. Ex: Shalnark, Skuwala, Vueze
Houshutsu (Release)
- The ability to control one's aura evenn if it's away from the body. Ex: Franklin, Toshichino
Gugenka (Embodying)
- The ability to create an object out off one's aura. Ex: Kurapika, Coltopi, Shizuku
Henka (Changing)
- The ability to create one's aura changge. Ex: Hisoka, Killua, Machi
Tokushitsu (Special / Emperor Nen)
- Anything that doesn't fall on any of tthe other five. Ex: Kurapika (when his eyes turn red), Kuroro, Neon
There are two ways on how to determine a person's nen type. The most famous and more reliable way is to use water, or Mizumishiki. Fill a glass with water until it almost overflows and place a leaf on the water. Then, one will place both hands on either side of the glass while doing Ren.
Kyouka
Another way is through Hisoka's sorting method. This method requires you to know about the person's personality to know his/her nen type. Though, this method is not always reliable, since a person might have overlapping traits that can make this somewhat difficult.
Kyouka
- The water volume changes, usually it wwould overflow.
Sousaka
- The leaf will move.
Houshutsu
- The color of the water changes.
Gugenka
- Some impurity appears on the water.
- The taste of the water changes.
Tokushitsu
- Other changes.
- simple-minded, determined to the pointt of being stubborn.
Sousaka
- logical and practical, does things hiss/her own way.
Houshutsu
- short-tempered and general about matteers.
Gugenka
- anxious and worries about little thinggs.
Henka
- changes mind easily, lies a lot.
Tokushitsu
- believes in individualism and has charrisma.
