Ethel was born
on a farm west of Orient to Anna Hansen. She joined the Kuper family
when Joe Kuper married Anna Hansen on 11 November 1913. She grew to her
teens on the family farms, graduating from Faulkton High School. After
graduation, she worked several jobs in the area, going to Deadwood for
awhile, then returning to Faulkton where she
married Porter Hall ( b. 1 July 1889) in September
of 1936. They went off to the Worlds Fair in New York for their
honeymoon.
Porter operated a garage in Harrold before they sold out and moved
to Pierre. There he worked as a filling station attendant and later as a
motel clerk until retiring. Ethel worked for the phone company
in Pierre for 25 years before retiring and
enjoyed her retirement to the fullest, always gadding about with her
friend, Rufus, spending time at the senior citizen's center, working in
her garden, watching the birds from her kitchen window and counting her
money) before moving into an apartment in Miller (to
be near her sister Edna) and then into the Good Samaritan Nursing
Home where she passed away in 2005. She and Porter had no children. He
passed away 3 May 1970 and is buried at Orient. Always the prim and
proper lady, Ethel could always be found with her hair and makeup just
right. Just wouldn't do to be seen "not ready for the day".
