Are you thinking of coming to Canada to visit, study, work or live? If so, contact the Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate nearest you. Our officers will be pleased to answer your questions about the documents you may need, the costs involved and offer advice.

In Canada, advice may be obtained free of charge by calling one of Citizenship and Immigration's Call Centres.

It is common international practice to charge for immigration and visa services. Canada's fees cover only a part of the work necessary to process your application.

Because processing fees are only for handling your application, you will not get your money back, even if your application is refused.

We therefore suggest you read our application kits very carefully before submitting a formal application.

Privilege Fees

Privilege fees are payments for a specific right or privilege, such as the acquisition of permanent resident status (Right of Landing Fee) or Canadian citizenship (Right of Citizenship Fee). All application kits explain when these fees must be paid. If the right or privilege is not granted, the fee must be refunded.

These fees provide partial compensation for the many intangible economic, social and legal rights and privileges that citizenship and permanent resident status confer. They are designed to increase equity in the revenue system by shifting a greater proportion of the financial responsibility from general taxpayers to the principal beneficiaries of the services.

Privilege fees are paid in addition to the processing fees for applications for permanent residence or Canadian citizenship.

Right of Landing Fee

The Right of Landing Fee is payable by all adult immigrants 19 years of age and over, regardless of nationality, ethnic origin or immigrant class, who apply to become permanent residents of Canada.

Right of Citizenship Fee

The Right of Citizenship Fee is payable by all adult applicants 18 years of age and over who apply to become citizens of Canada.

Processing Fees

Processing fees are collected at the time an application is submitted and help cover some of the costs of processing.

How to pay

Fees for applications which are mailed to a Case Processing Centre in Canada, (Mississauga, Vegreville, Sydney) must be paid at a financial institution in Canada.

Fees for applications processed at local Canada Immigration Centres or Ports of Entry in Canada may be paid in cash (Canadian dollars at local offices; U.S. or Canadian dollars at Ports of Entry), with Visa or MasterCard, by money order, traveller's cheque or certified cheque.

Fees for applications processed at Canadian visa offices abroad may be paid in cash (U.S., Canadian or local currency), money order, traveller's cheque, or certified cheque. Canadian visa offices abroad may insist that non-residents applying at their visa office pay the processing fee in a convertible currency.
