Scavenger Hunt

Rationale:

Scavenger hunts are a popular tool for teaching students how to access and use the resources and information available on the Internet. They allow students to practice problem solving, and improve their reading and comprehension skills. Other reasons for scavenger hunts include:

  • They are easy to create and interactive searches are both fun and informative
  • They provide students with technological and subject matter knowledge.
  • They can be use as a whole class activity, a team activity, or as a means of providing review or challenge activities for individual students.
                               

Types:

  • The teacher determines the questions or a series of item for the students to collect. The student then uses a search engine to locate the information.
  • The teacher determines the questions or a series of items for the students to collect and hypertext links to the URL's that will answer the questions. The student has to copy the link into the location box at the top of the browser screen or it they are hot links they just have to click on the link.

 

 

 

                             

Process:

  • First select the idea or concept to be reinforced or introduced.
  • Search for web sites to reinforce the concept or idea.
  • Determine the questions that students may answer at the site.
  • Save the scavenger hunt to a web site or it can be given to the students as a paper handout.
