Hailies Song
Chapter Ten

Kim sighed, and rubbed her right arm, walking down a hallway from the testing lab. She had just been tested for methomyl, and now they were testing Hailie. Dr Halpin had suggested that she go wait in his office with Marshall for the results, and that he would be along shortly after Hailies test was done. Kim still didnt know whether she was positive, or negative, she would find out when they talked later.
She turned the corner and into the hallway that Hailies room was in, and walked slowly along the quiet corridor. She could hear her own footsteps on the linoleum floor, the echo of the intercom as people were paged, and quiet beeping noises from machinery. It was really calming for some reason. She looked up from the white tiled floor, and saw Diane, walking towards her, immediatly Kim felt her blood pressure rising, anger swelling in her chest.
"Hey, Kim," Diane said as they stopped in front of each other.
"Hey." Kim said coldly.
"Have you seen Marshall, hes not in Hailies room, and shes not there either-" Diane looked back at the closed door to Hailies empty room.
"Hes in Doctor Halpins office, Im on my way there. The doctor wants to talk to us about Hailie. Their doing a test on her now in the lab. And this time we will find out exactly whats wrong with her, and how it happened." Kim said, staring at Diane. Dianes look faltered momentarily, Kim guessed at the slight worry of them finding out that she did poison Hailie.
"Well, maybe I should go with you guys? I mean, I am her step mother..." Diane said, raising both eyebrows.
"I think its best that you didnt." Kim said shortly.
"Well, Marshall needs my support, I mean hes going through such a hard time, and I wanna be there for him." She reasoned.
"Im going to be there, and so is the doctor. Thats all the support he needs right now. If he wanted you there, dont you think he would have asked you to join us?" Kim snapped.
"I... I dont know?" Diane licked her lips and changed the subject. "Your arm bothering you?"
"No." Kims arm immediatly left her right arm, and she planted them firmly at her sides, fingers curling into fists. She wanted to punch Diane right here, stain this clean white hallway with her blood. No one fucking tries to kill her kid and gets away with it. Kim never liked Diane. There was always something not right about her.
"So, is Hailie going to be okay?" Diane asked.
"She will be fine, very soon." Kim couldnt say the same for Diane. If she had her way, Diane would be dead within the next 10 minutes.
"Well," Diane said hopefully. "Thats good, I-"
"I have to go. Im going to be late." Kim stepped around Diane, and walked towards the office, not glancing back over her shoulder, at Diane, who stood behind her in the middle of the hallway, watching her leave.
As soon as Kim was out of site, Diane turned around, and looked around her, biting her bottom lip and slowly making her way towards the waiting room.
Marshall exhaled loudly and tapped his fingers on his knee, biting the side of his lip nervously. Hailie and Kim had both just been tested for methomyl, and a nurse had asked him to meet Dr Halpin in his office to discuss the results with him and Kim. Nervously, he waited for them to get there, hoping the results were negative, and that Kim was wrong.
He really didnt want to think about if Diane would do that or not. Of course he didnt think she would, it made no sense to him. But if methomyl was in their systems, what the fuck was he doing to do? How would he confront her about that? Especially with the lack of proof. And if it was true, she couldnt live with him and Hailie anymore. His daughter came first, and anyone who couldnt respect that, was not someone he wanted to be with.
The office door opened, and Marshall turned around, and watched Kim walk in, closing the door behind her. She smiled weakly at Kim, and he sighed. Niether one of them wanted to smile, not right now, not with all this happening. She sat in the chair beside his, in front of the desk, and he turned to her.
"Well?" He asked, and she shrugged.
"I dont know, thats what he wants to talk to us about. Theyre testing Hailie now, they did me first." She rubbed her arm slightly and he nodded, looking down.
Getting blood taken must have been hard for her, he thought. He knew how much she hated needles, well, the medical kind anyways. He smirked slightly at his own thought, and she glanced at him, wondering what that smirk was for.
"I saw Diane, in the hallway." She said, trying to make conversation. He didnt say anything, and she didnt let it phase her, she continued talking. "She wanted to know how Hailie was, and she wanted to come in here with us, to support you. She sure wasnt thinking about that when she poisoned Hailie."
"We dont know she definatly did that, or that its even poison." Marshall said defensively. Deep down he had his doubts about Diane, but something told him not to give up. To many people have let him down, he didnt want to believe that Diane would be one of them.
"Okay, well anyways, I told her that the doctors were finding out what is wrong with Hailie and how she got it, at this very moment, and she looked worried. So I think that she did do it, or at least knows something about it." Kim said.
"Thank you sherlock fucking holmes." Marshall leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and looking at the floor.
Kim sat back, not happy with Marshalls enthusiasm to this subject. "Whats your problem?" She said, watching him out of the corner of her eye.
"Im sorry, Im not having as much fun as you are, playing detective. What do you expect from me right now Kim? My wifes trying to poison my only child, whos sick in the hospital right now, and Im spending way to much time with my ex wife than I would like. Should I jump for fucking joy?" He said sarcastically.
Kim crossed her arms and looked away from him. How could be such a dick to her, when if it wasnt for her, they still would have no idea that Diane was doing this? He should be thanking her right now... Although she could see where he was coming from. If Aaron was trying to kill Whit, she would be in a pissy mood to. Her thoughts were interrupted by the door opening, and closing, and they both turned to see the doctor walk into the room.
"Hello, how are we all doing?" Dr Halpin greeted them, sitting at his desk and looking between the two of them.
"How do you think we are doing?" Marshall said miserably. "Lets get this over with. Whats the tests say?"
"Well... " Dr Halpin sighed. "To get right to the point, Kim and Hailie have both been tested for methomyl poisoning, and it was detected in both systems, Hailies worse than Kims, as we would have suspected, being subjected to it for longer, and larger amounts of it."
Marshall sighed. Diane was such a bitch, he decided.
"So now what?" Kim asked, eyes wide.
"Well, now we begin treating it. Im going to prescribe you some medication, mostly anti biotics and pennacilin... Same for Hailie. But you, Ms Scott, you may take the medicines on your own time, your free to leave the hospital whenever you like. However we do ask that you make an appointment to come back in a week, just to be sure that the antibiotics have eliminated the methomyl. You will be just fine." He nodded at Kim, who sighed, in relief.
"What about Hailie?" Marshall asked, that was all he could comprehend right now. Kim was going to be fine, but the doctor never mentioned if Hailie would be fine.
"Ms Mathers will, too, be just fine, in time. Unfortunatly theres more methomyl in her system, and its going to take longer to flush out. Im going to put her on two different kinds of antibiotics, and pennacilin, and Im going to call a poison center and ask if they reccomend that we do anything special with this case. Now, normally Hailie would be fine after a few days, to leave, with follow up appointments, of course. But given the circumstances, and the issues in the home, I think its in her best interest if she stayed at the hospital until you figured out what was going on with your wife." Dr Halpin glanced over the rim of his glasses at Marshall, when he looked up from the sheet in front of him. "It would not be a smart move to send the child home, when clearly theres a safety issues going on there. Are we in agreement on that?"
Marshall took a deep breath. He felt sick to his stomach. "Yeah." He choked out, eyes welling up with tears. He couldnt believe this was really happening.
"Ms Scott?" The doctor said, looking at her after Marshall responded.
"Yeah, I agree too." Kim nodded.
"Great. Now, Mr Mathers, do you know what your going to do about your wife?"
Marshall was thinking more along the lines of, acting out 'Kim', but he didnt think the doctor would like that answer. "Um, I dont know, I gotta talk to her about it, I guess."
"When will you be doing this?" Dr Halpin asked.
"Tonight?" Marshall shrugged, and glanced at Kim, who looked away from him. She was still mad at him, he thought, looking back at the doctor.
"I think thats best." Dr Halpin nodded.
