Hailies Song
Chapter Two
Rated R
Hailie had finally given in, and made an appointment to see a doctor. She had been sick now for almost two weeks, and no matter how much asprin she took, or how much rest she got, she swore she just felt worse. Diane had suggested that she see a doctor, and Hailie agreed immediatly, making the appointment that day. She hadnt been able to go to school at all this week, and needed a note to excuse her absences, anyway. It wouldnt hurt to talk to a professional? Right?
"So, what are you and dad doing for your anniversary next month?" Hailie whispered, looking beside her at Diane, who had driven her to the doctors. They were seated in a waiting room, one other person sat across from them, staring, but Hailie was used to that by now, what with being Eminems daughter.
"I dont know," Diane said softly, shrugging as she flipped a page in the magazine and stopped to look at a recipe for lasagna. "We havent talked about it, yet. I wanna ask him to go away." She said, glancing over the article and flipping the page.
"Where? Go somewhere nice, like....Cancun, or... I dont know, somewhere nice." Hailie shrugged, looking around the doctors office. She was feeling better than she had felt this morning, and most of the rest of the week, but still not 100 percent. She wouldnt even go as far as to guess 50 percent! She felt like shit.
"Yeah... You know how he is about that stuff though. He would rather stay home, and watch movies or something, or go somewhere for dinner and then come home. And thats nice, I dont mind that- but-" Diane was cut off as a door opened, and a tall woman in an offwhite pantsuit called out-
"Mathers? Hailie Jade?"
Hailie nodded and stood up, looking at Diane as she stood up with her. Hailie raised an eyebrow. She wasnt 5, she didnt need someone to come in with her. The look on Hailies face told Diane all she needed to hear without having to say it, and she sat back down, and Hailie walked towards the doctor slowly, feeling dizzy standing up.
Hailie smiled at the nurse as she followed her down a long, white hallway with a dark red rug. The nurse quickly weighed Hailie, and measured her height, and then opened one of the many doors in that hall, and gestured for Hailie to enter.
Closing the door behind them, the nurse followed Hailie into the room. "Please have a seat," she instructed, and Hailie climbed up onto the cushiony seat that patients sit on while at the doctors. She had her blood pressure read, her pulse taken, her ears checked, and watched the nurse write all the results down on a clipboard that held Hailies file and exit the room, explaining that the doctor would just be a moment.
Hailie nodded and waited patiently for her doctor to see her, looking around the boring little room she was in. Everything was always the same at the doctors. All the rooms looked alike. There was always a chair a corner, beside the examining table, and a small grey turny stool in front of the examining table. A metal sink, that Hailie had NEVER seen a doctor use before, and cabinets above the sink, holding medical supplies, that again Hailie had never seen any doctor use. The blood pressure machine hung on the wall closest to the table Hailie sat on, and a mirror was opposite that. She hated the doctors office, so very much.
"Hello Hailie," The door opened and her doctor stepped in, smiling at her. Hailie liked her doctor though. Dr Le, an average size, blonde woman, with brown eyes and always wearing a smile.
"Hi," Hailie smiled back at her, and watched her take a seat, holding the clipboard in her hand.
"I understand your not feeling to well?" Dr Le said, looking expectantly at Hailie, as if Hailie should tell her whats wrong.
"Yeah, well, Ive been sick for a while now, almost 2 weeks." Hailie said quietly, suddenly feeling tired and cold.
"Why dont you tell me about your symptons?" Dr Le said, sympathetically.
"Well," Hailie began, thinking carefully. Ive been having a headache, and Ive been feeling like Im going to throw up, and Im having cramps, and also Im more tired than usual."
"Hmm," Dr Le said, thinking about her symptoms. "Your on the depo provera birth control shot, correct?"
"Yes," Hailie nodded, watching Dr Le nod as she looked at the clip board.
"With depo provera, you dont get a period right?"
"Right," Hailie nodded.
"Im only asking because, your symptoms could be your period, but since your on the shot, which most patients dont have their periods on, It cant be that." Dr Le looked up at her.
Hailie raised an eyebrow. "Okay..." 'So why doesnt she try telling me what it IS', Hailie thought, clearing a throat.
"Now, Since its not related to that, The symptoms sound like a flu, or a virus. Now, if that was the case, it probably would be over, if you say you have had it two weeks, or maybe on the outs. Your not feeling better, at all?" Dr Le asked, sighing as Hailie shook her head.
"If anything, I feel worse." She looked down.
"Have you been taking anything?" Dr Le asked, crossing her legs and watching Hailie shrug.
"Just like, tylonel, asprin, took some nyquil last night, but thats it." She answered.
"Well, I honestly cant even begin to think of what you might have," Dr Le said, "But, We cant let this just go, incase its something deeper. Im not going to prescribe you anything until I know what we are dealing with here, I would, however, like you to give a blood sample, so we can further check it out. Can you do that?"
Hailie nodded and Dr Le smiled. "Good. Now, Ill send a nurse in to take a blood sample, you should get a call from the office within 3 days, and until then, try to get as much rest as you can. Have you been to school?"
"Not this week." Hailie shook her head.
"Well, if you want, and I dont know why I say if you want because I think I know what your going to say, I can write you a note to stay home the rest of the week, until Friday you should be getting a call, at the latest." Dr Le offered, smiling as Hailie nodded.
"Yeah, that would be, awesome." Hailie smiled and Dr Le stood up.
"Okay, well, Ill see you on your next appointment. I hope you feel better." She said, and excused herself from the room.
An hour later, Diane and Hailie were home, Hailie had gone straight to bed, and Diane was downstairs, watching television, when Marshall came home, around 4:30 that afternoon. When Diane heard him come in the garage door in the kitchen, she stood up, flipped the tv off, and headed towards the kitchen to see him. She had decided to talk to Marshall about their anniversary, after talking to Hailie, thinking that if they did plan to go away, they needed time to plan and book the tickets and hotel, which wouldnt be hard for Marshall Mathers.
He was running water and holding a cup under the faucet when she entered the kitchen, and he looked up and grinned at her, switching the water off. "Hey, Di, howd it go today at the doctors?" He held the cup to his lips and sipped it, watching her walk over to the kitchen table and sit down. He walked over to sit beside her, and she shrugged.
"It went okay, They took blood, Hailie has a note to stay home from school for the rest of the week, and they will call us Friday with the test results. I guess the doctor thinks if it was the flu or a virus that it would be getting better by now." Diane explained what Hailie had told her earlier that afternoon.
"The flu, eh?" Marshall leaned back in his chair. "Is there anything going around that she could get?"
"I dont know, maybe shes having a bad reactioin to the flu, or something. I think she will be fine," Diane assured him.
"I fuckin hope so," Marshall said, worried about his daughter.
"How was the studio this morning?" Diane asked, standing up and walked over to the refridgerator.
"Sucked," Marshall watched her take an apple out of a drawer and wash it under the faucet carefully, before turning back to the table and sitting beside him. "All the producers do is give me shit, and Im so fuckin sick of it," Marshall rolled his eyes. "Like, If I want this shit, I wouldnt have my own label, right? But even my own label is on my ass."
"Im sorry," Diane said, biting into the apple.
"Well its not that bad, Its like, whatever, yanno? Im ready to produce the whole thing myself, and if I had the time, I would. But between the 4 different albums Im producing for people, between writing, being home, and doing press, plus being back and forth on a plane to LA for Dre to kick my ass every other day, I cant. I fucking hate this. Im hardly in the spotlight, and honestly Im busier than when I was all over tv and radio." He rolled his eyes.
"Funny how things work out," Diane smiled at him. "Everyone wants a peice of you, baby."
"I know. Theres not enough to go around." Marshall said exasperatedly. "Its good though. Ill live."
"You should take a vacation," Diane hinted, watching him shrug.
"Id take a vacation, I probably could, but Id still end up working, or something, on my so called, vacation. I dont know. Maybe it would be nice to just, stay home for a few days." He shrugged.
"Or a week." Diane suggested. He nodded.
"A week at the most. Thatd be nice, watch some good tv, get some writing done, hang out with you and Hailie more," He thought, warming up to the idea of a vacation.
"Or like, getting a tan, and swimming in the ocean, and going out to eat," Diane listed, still hinting at her vacation idea.
"I dont think I could tan in Michigan, the suns never fucking out, and the nearest ocean is... not very close," He laughed.
"Well, what if we... went somewhere?" Diane smiled at him.
"Ah, I get it. You wanna go away." He ran a hand over his head, sighing. "Where would we go, if I could get a week off? Especially with Hailie, she has school, she cant miss anymore school, her being sick is killing all her sick days, Im worried about her passing. She needs to graduate...."
"Well, maybe the two of us could go, together, for our anniversary. Hailie thinks its a good idea! Shes old enough to stay alone," Diane said quickly.
"Not for a week, not with me miles and miles away. It was one thing if we were going for a night, but, I dont want her alone for a week." Marshall shook his head.
"She could stay at Kims... Kim wouldnt mind, Im sure of that. She always says she never gets to see Hailie enough, Hailie is still close to school and she wont mind staying at Kims!"
"No, theres a reason she goes to Kims two weekends a month, alright? If Hailie stayed a week at Kims, she would be babysitting those kids all day and wouldnt have time for homework, sleep, time to go out with her friends, and Kim probably wouldnt make sure she goes to school. I dont like what goes on in Kims house, I know Hailies 17 now, and I know shes a big girl, but still, Kim still does drugs, Kims boyfriend does drugs," Marshall stood up, listing all the reasons he didnt want Hailie at Kims.
"I thought her boyfriends a cop?" Diane raised both eyebrows, curiously.
"He is, but he still does drugs! I cant fuckin stand that guy anyway, and you know what? Honestly, I dont want her at Kims on the weekends, its worse if shes there for a week. Shed be better off alone all week here, than at Kims."
"What about Betty?" Diane asked, hopefully.
"My aunt Bettys got enough to deal with, shes got her own kids, shes got her own house, and she lives three hours away. Hailie cant go up there, and Bettys not gonna come down here, not for a week, not with her kids in school too." He rolled his eyes.
"Is this really because of Hailie, or do you just not want to go away?" Diane asked, suspiciously.
Marshall exhaled loudly. "Part of it is Hailie, a BIG part of it, and another part of it is that yes, I would rather stay home, I dont wanna go away. We just went to Hawaii 3 months ago for a week in the summer, and I just wanna stay here, you know?"
"But Hailie was with us when we went to Hawaii. Im talking me and you, alone, for a week, in Cancun, on the beach..."
"I know, But look, Id just rather not."
"Fine." Diane could see it was useless argueing with him once he had made up his mind.
"Im sorry, look maybe... I dont know. Maybe we can go away later, like not this month, or anytime soon. Maybe like, after the holidays and stuff... Maybe the summer when its nicer, or something." He offered, almost feeling bad.
"Yeah, I dont care." Diane shrugged, almost resenting Hailie, and Marshall, she just wanted a vacation, and he was being so, so stupid. It wasnt Hailies fault, it was his fault, its just Hailie was the reason. Hailie was the reason he did anything anymore.
