Hailie Jade Mathers opened the front door to her large Detriot home, and stepped inside, out of the drizzing rain. Tossing her bookbag to the floor lazily, she ran one of her hands threw her damp hair. She sighed and headed down the front hallway towards the kitchen, clearing her throat as she went. As she got closer to the kitchen door, she could hear talking, and she turned the corner into the brightly lit kitchen, and glanced to the left, where her father, Marshall Mathers, and her step mother Diane, were sitting at the kitchen table.

Marshall had been eating a turkey and cheese sandwich when she walked in, and looked up, swallowing the bite of food before he spoke, "Hey, baby," He put the sandwich down on the plate in front of him and watched Hailie walk across the kitchen and take a glass out of the cupboard, and turn towards the fridge.

"Hi," She mumbled, pulling the fridge open and taking out a carton of orange juice.

"How are you feeling?" Diane asked, turning in her seat to watch Hailie pour her glass.

"Like shit," Hailie said, putting the orange juice back in the fridge and slamming the door shut. "Thank GOD, its Friday, and I can just sleep for the weekend and not worry about school or anything!"

"Arent you going to moms this weekend?" Marshall asked as Hailie crossed the kitchen and stood by the doorway.

"Im going to call her and tell her Ill go next weekend, I dont feel good, and I know Im just gonna feel worse tommorow, Ive been like this since wednesday. Shes just gonna end up going out tommorow night, and Ill have to watch Whitney and Jake, and I cant take care of them right now, and I doubt mom wants to get them sick with whatever I have." Hailie explained. "Im going to bed, if anyone calls for me... Tell them Ill call them back, or something."

"Okay baby, want some asprin?" He raised both eyebrows as she shook her head and left the room.

After the pounding of her feet on the stairs had ended, Marshall sighed and stood up, stretching his arms out in front of him, and yawned.

"Arent you going to finish your lunch?" Diane glanced at the sandwich she had made for her husband, and he shook his head.

"I gotta get down to the studio and help out DeShaun with one of his new tracks." He said. "God, Im exhausted."

"Ohhh," Diane smiled and stood up, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head on his chest. "Maybe you should sleep, stay here," She said, inhaling the smell of his shirt. He always smelled so... good. She didnt know what it was, he didnt wear any cologne, must just be him.

He smirked and shook his head, hugging her gently. "If I stay here, We both know I wont get any sleep."

She stepped back, in mock surprise that he had said that, and pushed at his chest a little, laughing. "Im willing to garuntee thats ALL you would get, if you stayed here." She assured him, watching him shook his head and walk towards the door.

"Yeah..." Marshall grabbed his coat off the hook by the door, that led from the kitchen, out onto a patio and then to the garage, where Marshalls truck was parked. "But DeShaun needs my help on this track, I can sleep later, I have tommorow off, thought we would have the house to ourselves, and we could, hang out alone, tommorow, but, Hailie aint goin to Kims..."

"Yeah." Diane said shortly, looking around the room restlessly. "Guess, THATS not going to happen." She said, with attitude.

"Dont worry baby," Marshall shook his head and crossed the kitchen. "Next weekend...." He said, kissing her forehead. She tilted her face up, and kissed his lips briefly, and he turned around, walking towards the door and pulling it open. "Ill be back probably by 11, at the very, latest." He rolled his eyes and slammed the door behind him, and Diane turned around, leaning her hand on the kitchen counter and sighing, looking towards the table, where Marshalls have eaten sandwich lay.

Hailie groaned and shut her bedroom door, taking a sip from her glass of orange juice, and leaving the glass on the top of her bureau, and swiftly shed her pants, walking over to a pile of laundry on nearby chair. She slipped into a pair of boxers, and didnt bother changing her teeshirt, heading towards the bed. She was glad she could rest, and not have to worry about school tommorow. Her mother wouldnt mind switching weekends, she was really good about that. When Hailie had something to do on one of her mothers weekends, her mother was fine with it, as long as she got the weekend made up for, and to see her daughter.

Kim lived not to far away, about 10 minutes away, in Detriot, with Whitney, and Jake, Kims other baby. Kim and the kids live with Aaron Havord, Kims boyfriend, and Jakes father. Jakes 2, and Whitney is 12. Hailie didnt mind going to her mothers, sometimes she looked forward to it. Aaron was nice enough, and she loved spending time with her brother and sister. Kim always needed a babysitter when Hailie was around. Convenient, isnt it?

Hailie got into bed, having not bothered to make the bed that morning, the covers were bunched in a ball and hanging off the foot of the bed, and she pulled them up around her shoulders, shivering and relaxing into the warmth. Thank god for her bed. It always made everything better. Her safe place.

She rolled her eyes when she heard a knock on the door, and called out, "Come in!" It better not be her father, she thought. She had told him she was okay, and he always has to baby her when shes sick, all she wanted right now was to be left ALONE.

The door opened and she looked over at her step mother, entering the room, carrying a cup of cold water, her other hand was clenched around something Hailie couldnt see.

"Hi hunny," Diane said, walking towards the bedside, putting the glass of water beside her orange juice on her way, and feeling Hailies forehead with her now free, hand. "Thought Id come up and check on you, see how your doing."

"Ive been better." Hailie said, truthfully. Diane nodded and sat beside her on the bed.

"Well, I know you told your father that you didnt want any asprin, but I really think it will help if you have something." Diane explained, opening her clenched hand, revealing two small pills, about the size of a tylonel. "It might make you feel better, and it will help you get some sleep."

Hailie nodded. She did want to get sleep, and at this point she didnt think she could feel worse, so what would it hurt to take something that would make her feel better? She took the pills from Diane, who stood up and handed her the cup, watching Hailie pop the pills into her mouth, and take a mouthful of water to wash them down. Hailie handed her back the water, and cleared her throat, sighing. "Thanks. Will you hand me my phone? I forgot to call my mom," Hailie asked, pointing to her cordless phone on the top of her desk.

"Sure," Diane handed her the phone, and Hailie began dialing the numbers.

"Thanks," She said, as Diane nodded quietly and left the room so Hailie could call her mother, closing the door behind her.

Before she went downstairs, Diane stayed a minute at the top of the stairs, just outside Hailies bedroom door, and listened carefully.

"Hi mom?....Yeah, Im not feeling so good.... I know, but Its been for a week....No, I dont want to go to the doctors.... I told dad, yeah....I just dont feel like coming up there this weekend, I wanna sleep and rest, but can I come next weekend? Okay," Hailie giggled. "Tell Whitney I said hi back, give Jake kisses for me, Alright? Bye mom, love you."

Diane nodded, and went down the stairs, towards the kitchen, to clean up and do dishes. She entered the bright kitchen, and picked up the plate with half of Marshalls eaten sandwich on it, and dumped it in the trash bag, and put the plate in the sink. She turned on the water, and put her hands under the stream of warm water, watching the soap and water in the sink gradually fill up more and more.

Diane and Marshall had been married almost 4 years now, and they dated 2 years before they got married. They been together for 6 years, but had known each other for 9. Diane loved Marshall, and Marshall loved Diane. They were the same age, Diane had been married before, as Marshall had been to Kim. Dianes husband passed away almost 10 years ago, and she met Marshall and fell for him right away. It took Marshall a while to find feelings for Diane, first he was in a relationship, then that ended, but him and Kim tried a try at their relationship one last time, and when that ended, him and Diane tried dating, and it turned out well.

Hailie and Diane had hit it off, nearly right away. Hailie was really open to the fact of her parents not being together. Marshall was proud of her for that. The way Hailie saw it was, if she couldnt change anything about it, why spend time being miserable because of it? She made the best, becoming fast friends with Diane, they went shopping together, talked, they hung out. She wasnt a replacement mother, Hailie still had Kim. She saw Kim every other weekend, and whenever she wanted on holidays. They left that up to Hailie to pick and choose the holidays she wanted to spend with which parents. Most of the time she spent half the day at her dads, and the other half at her moms. Kim was still a big part in her life, but Diane was also.
