/Guilty Conscience/
/Chapter 14/
Monday Night - 11:14 PM - DeShauns Party
Murry, Matt and Joey slowly walked down a dark, Detriot backroad, Matt and Joey on the sidewalk, talking excitedly about the party, and the people that they had met, Murry in the gutter, occasionally joining them on the sidewalk, only to hop back into the street, and kick a deserted soda can a few feet away.
"So, where are we going to do this?" Matt asked, glancing at Murry.
She shrugged and kicked the can a few feet away from her, this time leaving it in the street as she grew bored with it. "We're near the park, and its gonna be empty... Its monday night, we might as well go there."
"Alright." Matt nodded, and Joey remained silent. He didnt even know why he had gone with them, they were both drunk, Murry more so than Matt, and Joey didnt like when they smoked. Not to be hypocritical, he liked partying as much as the next guy, but it seemed his friends did it way to often. Especially Murry. He was begginging to wonder if the talk they had the other day got through to her at all.
The three friends stepped onto the feild at the park, crossing the grass and the basketball court to a picnic table near some trees. The park was shadowy, eery at this time of night, but they were used to it. They could hear the sounds of cars, driving by, and occasionally sirens in the distance. This was Detriot. Murry stepped onto the bench of the picnic table, and sat on the table, her feet resting on the bench below her as she dug into her jeans pocket.
Joey sat on the bench beside her, and Matt paced around in front of them slowly, he didnt want to sit down, not right now. He watched her pull out the pipe and a plastic sandwich baggy with weed in it, tied tightly at the top.
"Shit, thats alot more weed than I thought you had..." Matt raised an eyebrow. "Yeah well, I bought some weed today..."
"Where the hell did you get the money for that?" Joey asked. Matt was right. There had to be close to a hundred dollars worth of weed in the baggy. "You dont got a job..."
"Yeah.. I just.... I saved up." Murry shrugged and opened the baggy, carefully pushing a few peices into the pipe, and putting the pipe on the table beside her to reclose the baggy. She didnt dare tell Joey about the pills she had been selling. Her mother still hadnt noticed that they were gone. Matt watched her put the baggy back into her pocket, and pull out a lighter, using the bottom of it to pack the pipe tightly, and then held it up. "Who wants the first hit?"
"Im not smoking." Joey shook his head. "You guys can..."
"Right..." Matt held out his hand. "I will." Murry handed him the pipe, and he raised it to his lips, lighting the lighter and touching the flame to the bowl on the end of the pipe. He inhaled, the taste and scent of weed felt good, as he took the pipe away from his lips. He held his breath for a minute as he handed the pipe to Murry, who watched him exhale smoke before she took a hit.
A few minutes had gone by, passing the bowl between Matt and Murry, and Joey watching, occasionally talking about something random, just so they werent in silence. Matt had the pipe, it was his turn to take some, and Murry rubbed her arms. "Is anyone else starting to get cold?"
"No..." Joey shook his head.
"Well you have a coat on..." Murry rolled her eyes. "Give me your coat."
"No," He laughed, joking around as she whined. He hugged the jean jacket tighter around him and she tugged at his sleeve. "Fine," He grinned, shedding his jacket and holding it towards her. She gratefully put it on, and looked to Matt, who was holding the pipe to her expectantly.
"Whats wrong?" She asked. "My turn?"
"No, I didnt get anything from it... put more in." Matt said as she took the pipe and nodded. "Im not even high yet..." He sighed.
"Me either," She admitted, pulling the baggy out and pushing a few more peices into the pipe, packing it with the lighter, and then put the baggy in Joeys jacket pocket, not paying attention to where she was putting her weed. "This shits wicked good though, no seeds or anything, I love it."
"I know." Matt agreed as she took a hit from it first, this time, and nodded, handing it to him as she exhaled and smoke floated out from her nose slowly, fading into the night.
"I think after this, Im just gonna go home..." Joey thought, outloud.
"Your not going back to the party?" Murry asked, as Matt handed her the pipe.
"No, Im just gonna, go home and get some sleep, I kind of have a headache..." He shrugged.
"Aw, come on man." Matt grinned at him. "You know you arent even drunk enough, you havent puked once tonight, and theres so much more alcohol at the party!"
"Nah, I think Im good." Joey shook his head.
"Well," said Murry in a cloud of smoke. "Since your going that way anyways... Ill walk with you home, so I dont have to walk home alone later. I hate walking alone. I dont wanna stay at DeShauns tonight either," She didnt tell them it was because of Marshall. Things were definatly not the same between them, no matter what.
"Okay, thats fine." Joey shrugged.
"You done?" Murry asked, as Matt handed her the pipe and nodded. Murry put it in the same pocket with the weed and the lighter, and looked at Matt as he started to say something.
Matt shook his head. "Y'all are fuckin babies. Im the only real lush here." He grinned at Joey, who rolled his eyes.
"And thats something to be proud of..." Joey teased, sighing. "Im cold, can I have my jacket back now?"
"Fine," Murry shed the jacket and pushed it towards him. Joey took it and watched Matt pull the sweater from over his head.
"Here," He handed the sweater to Murry, who took it, grinning at him. "Im not cold, in fact, Im fucking sweating. And if I get cold, Im to drunk to care."
Murry smiled, and shook her head. "Thanks man," She pulled it over her head, and looked to Matt.
"Aight." Matt sighed. "I guess, I'll see you guys tommorow, or something?"
"Yeah, probably," Murry nodded. "Hey, I gotta uh, talk to you tommrow about some stuff so, why dont you come over around like, 3ish? Both my parents will still be at work, so just let yourself in."
"Okay." Matt nodded and held out a hand to Joey, who promptly hit his hand and nodded. "See ya man," He looked to Murry. "Tomorow, at 3?"
"Yep. See ya then." She nodded, and he grinned, turning and leaving, in the direction of DeShauns house.
"Well, we got a little bit of a walk ahead of us, you wanna get going to?" Joey glanced at her as she nodded and stood up, jumping from the bench of the picnic table to the grass below. He stood up and they walked across the feild, in the opposite direction of Matt, towards their houses.
As they walked along the dark streets, the occasional car passing them, street lights shining onto the road every 25 feet or so, Murry shoved her hands into her jeans pockets, and looked down at the ground, boredly. She was already starting to feel like shit, and she wasnt that high, she had a major tolerance for weed, over the years it just kept getting stronger.
"I wish I had a ciggarette right now..." She thought, outloud. Joey nodded, and glanced at her.
"Yeah. Buy a pack or something, since you have enough money for that much weed, dont you have money for ciggarettes?" He raised an eyebrow, knowing damn well she didnt 'save' up for the weed. He knew there was something deeper, something more than she was saying. He just had no idea what, but this was Murry, whatever it was had something to do with drugs, selling, buying, exchanging, and it was illegal, any way you looked at it. But he wasnt going to lecture. No, he promised he would lighten up.
"Yeah..." Murry cleared her throat. "I guess." She knew that he figured she didnt save, Joey was smarter, and he knew her better than she wanted to admit.
"What did you need to talk to Matt about tommorow?" He asked, looking at her out of the corner of his eyes, as she scratched the back of her neck and shrugged.
"Just, I dont know." She really didnt know what to tell him. She couldnt say, 'A drug deal!'. Joey would be ripshit. She didnt want him mad at her again. "So did you have fun tonight?"
"Yeah..." He shrugged, noticing that she changed the subject. "It was interesting..."
"Interesting?" She laughed.
"Yeah." He grinned at her, and they both looked behind them as they saw headlights of a car pulling up behind them. "What the fuck?" Joey cursed under his breath as they stopped walking and stared into the bright lights of a cop car, parked right behind them. Two cops got out of the car, leaving the lights to the car on, and walked towards them.
Murry glanced at Joey, and then back at the cops. Shit, she thought. She had weed on her. She had alot, of weed, on her. And her pipe... She was fucked. The cops stopped in front of them, and looked from her to Joey, and then the first one spoke.
"Hey," One of the cops said, looking at Joey. "You two going somewhere tonight?"
"Home?" Joey answered, taking a deep breath. This was really, not good.
"Where were you before this?" The second cop asked, raising an eyebrow and looking at his partener. Murry licked her lips. It was obvious that they could smell the weed now, but why had they stopped them in the first place?
"At the park, up there a little ways." Murry replied, nodding in the direction of the park.
"You know we saw you leave that park, and we werent sure if you two knew that theres a no tresspassing law, after 7PM or dark." The first officer crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow as Joey shrugged. "What were you doing at the park?"
"We were on our way back from a party, and stopped for a rest, hung out and talked." Murry answered calmly. Inside she pleaded with god not to let them find out she had weed on her.
"A party? Was there, drinking at this party?" One of the officers said, and Joey shook his head.
"No sir."
"Are you sure about that?" Joey nodded and the cop raised both eyebrows. "Was there any other sort of drugs at this party, besides alcohol?"
"No." Murry said quickly.
"It sure smells like weed around here, would you mind emptying your pockets?" The second officer looked to Murry, whos eyes were wide, and she nodded.
What could she do? He wanted her to empty her pockets, and its not like she could just say no, and get searched and he would find her weed anyway. Better to just cooperate, she figured. She took a deep breath and reached into her pockets, her heart beating faster every second. Her look faltered as she felt nothing in her pocket, except a wallet and a pack of gum. She looked up at the cop, and held her hands out to him, showing him her wallet and the pack of gum.
Joey looked from her hands, to her face, and she saw him staring at her out of the corner of her eyes. They both knew what that meant. If Murry didnt have the weed...
"And you, will you empty your pockets?" The first cop nodded at Joey, who opened his mouth, as if to protest, saw the look from Murry, as she watched him, and closed his mouth. Reaching into his jacket pockets, and sighing as he felt the pipe in one pocket, the lighter and baggy in the other. He slowly removed his hands from his jacke,t and held it out to the cop. The cop looked at Joey, and then to his partener.
"Thats weed," The second cop picked up the baggy and Joey looked down at the ground. He should have never let Murry wear his jacket. He should have never gone on the walk with them in the first place. He didnt smoke, and hes going to get in big trouble for something, he just knew it. Well, he decided, he wasnt going down like this. He wasnt going to have this on his record.
"Thats not mine." He said quickly. "Its not- Its hers, its her weed, and her pipe and her lighter," He stuttered a little bit, out of nerves more than anything else, and the cops looked to each other.
"I need to see your ID's," The first cop requested, and Murry pulled her ID card out of her wallet, and held it out to the cop, watching Joey reach into his back pocket and pull out his wallet, handing his license to the cop as well.
Joey looked to the second cop, and shook his head. "Im telling the truth, you have to believe me, that weeds not mine, its hers. Tell them Murry," He looked at her and she bit her bottom lip, knowing she should tell the truth, take the blame for this. The weed was hers, the pipe was hers, Joey didnt have anything to do with this, but they found it on him... No matter how hard she tried to speak, she couldnt. It seemed easier just to let him take the blame for this.
"Joseph, we are going to have to take you down to the station," The first cop said, putting his ID in his pocket and reaching for his handcuffs. "Miranda, we will have to take you down too, and call your parents."
Joey glared at Murry, and she wanted to cry. She couldnt believe she hadnt said anything, she had let him take the blame, he would never forgive her for this.
The cops patted the kids down, making sure they had no weapons on them, and walked them over to the back of the cop car, opening the door for them, and watching them climb in, sitting as far away from each other in the backseat as possible, as they were brought down to the station.
