Chapter 9
Marshall sighed and walked down the hallway at school, DeShaun beside him. They both looked depressed, and they both had reason to be. They stopped at DeShauns locker, which was right across the hall from Latayas. Marshall leaned against the locker beside DeShauns as he put his books in it, and went through it looking for his math notebook.
He sighed, remembering, just last month, with Lataya.
Lataya shoved her book in her locker and sighed, brushing the hair out of her face and taking a pen from the bottom of the locker. She straightened up and grinned as she felt a pair of arms wrap themselves around her waist. She pretended not to notice as she felt Marshall behind her, kissing her neck, and she took her World History notebook off the shelf.
"Hey." Marshall said after a minute.
"Hi." She said, slamming the locker shut and pulling away from him. "What class you got now?"
"Who cares? Wanna go sit on the bleachers this period?" He asked.
"Ah, but we did that yesterday this period. We cant always skip the same class, they will get suspicious." She laughed.
"So what?" He asked, his arms going back around her. "I hate math anyways."
"Ha ha, you so crazy. C'mon, after lunch we'll go home early." She grinned up at him and he couldnt help but grin back. He LOVED her smile.
"Sure thang chicken, sure thang." He said, kissing her lips lightly. She giggled and moved his arms away from her, intertwining her fingers with his in the process.
"She asked me to clean out her locker and give the books back to the classes." DeShaun said, looking from Marshall to the locker, slowly. "Want to help?"
"Yeah." Marshall said, as they walked across the hall. DeShaun knew her combination, so did Marshall. They stopped at the locker, and DeShaun handed Marshall his books as he turned the combination wheel slowly. Marshall grasped onto the books and waited as he opened the locker.
The inside had pictures, of just about everyone that she listened to in music. It looked like a shrine dedicated to NWA. She loved NWA, especially Ice Cube and Dr Dre. Books were shoved in the locker every which way, papers stuck inbetween them, it was a mess, looked just like her room. A black and white bandana hung from one of the hooks in the top of the locker. Marshall reconized it. The bandana he had given her months ago, as a present.
He took a deep breath and reached over, grabbing it off the hook and looking it over in his hands. It was black, with a white design on it. She wasnt allowed to wear it in school, so she left it in her locker and wore it on the way home from school and stuff. He swallowed hard and shoved the bandana in his pocket.
DeShaun grabbed papers and took an armful of them, and walked away towards a classroom door to throw them away. Marshall put his books down on the floor and grabbed a few books out of the locker, making sure there were no papers in them and putting them in a pile on the floor. He stopped as he found his mathbook, buried deep under all her crap. He smiled, remembering how he used to just leave his stuff in her locker.
"I still dont fucking understand this Lataya." Marshall sighed and leaned back in his chair, throwing the pen down at the notebook and crossing his arms. Lataya sat beside him at his kitchen table, her own notebook and mathbook unfolded in front of her. Marshall and her were in the same math class.
"Here, look." She said, putting her pen down and reaching for his, turning his notebook diagnolly so that it was inbetween them both. He sat up, somewhat reluctantly and looked down at the paper, where his scratchy handwriting had been writing down various math problems and crossing things out.
"Okay, so we have the fraction two third's, right? We want to multiply it by, two. So how would we do that?" She asked, writing down the problem and looking up at him.
"Um, four sixths?" He asked, rolling his eyes. He hated Math, he hated homework, and the only reason he was even doing his homework was because of Lataya.
"No, now look. Multiply the top number by two... oh no, wait..." She chewed the top of his pen and he watched her, out of the corner of his eye. He liked her. He liked her alot. They werent going out though. He wanted to go out with her, but he was to shy to ask her. DeShaun and told him to ask her, and said that she liked him, but he was still to shy.
He didnt realize that he was staring at her, and she glanced at him and he looked down at her hand as it scrawled across the top of her notebook, and then moved over to his own.
"Okay, well I was right. Here look. Two over one is the same as two, right?" She paused and looked at him and he didnt know what she was talking about, but he nodded anyways, figuring that he was suposed to say that. "Right, so... you go, two over one, times two thirds, like this." She wrote it down and looked back up at him.
"Okay..." He licked his lips.
"Aight, now, we gotta solve it. So, we multiply the two top numbers, and the two bottom numbers. So, one times three is...?" She trailed off, waiting for him to answer.
"Three." He said, watching her nod and write down three on the side with a line over it for the fraction. She moved her hand up to the top numbers, waiting for him to tell her what two times two was, and he cleared his throat and said, "Four."
"Good. So the answer..." She said, writing it down, "Is four thirds." She said, putting the pen down and looking up at him, grinning. "You just did the math problem. You understand it?"
"Yeah." He said blankly, not really understanding it.
"See? You dont need me now." She said, smiling at him and picking up her own pen, looking down at her notebook.
He licked his lips and looked down at his paper, looking over her handwriting on his homework. Compared to his, it looked so good, so smooth and natural. He looked at her out of the corner of his eye, she had no idea how much he needed her. And not just for math. She was like, his best friend, and he was falling for her like a ton of bricks was tied to his foot and someone dropped him off a bridge.
"Hey baby!" Kim said, walking up behind him and kissing his cheek, jolting him out of his thoughts. He pulled away a little, and didnt say anything, he was still mad at her, and hadnt talked to her in a few days. "I missed you yesterday, how come you werent in school?"
"Uh," He shrugged and looked through the stuff she had in her locker.
"Is my baby sick?" She cooed, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I'll make you feel better."
"Yeah." He said, bending down and putting some more of her books on the floor.
"Whos locker is this?" She asked. "Your lockers down the hall, is this DeShauns?" She asked, looking around for DeShaun. "Where is he? Is he ok? Why are you cleaning out his stuff?"
"This is Latayas locker, and shes not coming back to school, so me and DeShaun are cleaning it out for her. Hes throwing papers away." He said quickly, hoping to god she would leave.
"Oh." She said shortly, clearing her throat. "Your still friends with her then?"
"No. Not really anymore." He replied.
"Why not?" She asked, grinning. He looked at her and scowled.
"Because, she tried to kill herself and is now in a motherfucking mental hospital." He said in a mock cheerful voice.
Kim tried not to laugh. "Too bad she didnt succeed."
"Yeah, good thing we found her huh? Me and DeShaun. Found our friend, laying on the floor, blood all over the place, her wrists and throat slit open. How the fuck would you like it if your throat was slit open?" Marshall asked threateningly. Of course he didnt really mean it, but what can he say? Hes pissed and just wants to scare her a little bit.
"Um," Kim pursed her lips together and backed away a little to the delight of Marshall. "Ill see you later baby, after school right?" She asked. He didnt answer, just glared at her. Forcing a smile she walked away.
"Whoa, nice job." Marshall whipped around when he heard DeShauns voice. DeShaun was leaning against the lockers, arms folded in front of him, grinning at him. "You sure told her off."
"Yeah." Marshall mumbled, finding it hard to enjoy a moment that he would usually like alot more if Lataya was here.
"Aight, lets hurry and get the rest of this shit out." DeShaun said, reaching into the locker and pulling more out. He wanted to get it over with, he hated doing this. Everything in here reminded him of Lataya, and he missed her already. He would always miss her, he would always remember her too. She was the kind of person that was really hard to forget. Especially since he had known her for so long, and they were such good friends. It would be impossible to forget about her.
"Yeah," Marshall agreed, and they finished cleaning the locker in silence. Alot of Marshalls stuff was in there, one of his shirts, which he honestly had no clue how it got in there, one of his hats from last month that he told her to keep there for him, and the math book that he lost the beggining of this year.
They finished, returned the books to the teachers, and were about 10 minutes late to class, but didnt get in trouble. The rest of the day went by slowly, and finally after school they met up at the usual spot outside the front doors, and started walking home, the same route that they had first taken the day that they had met, except they were missing Lataya.
"Marshall!" A voice yelled from behind them. Marshall groaned and turned around to see Kim there. DeShaun stopped and turned around too, and glared at Kim as she approached them. "Im sorry, Marshall, whats that look for?" She asked innocently, stopping in front of them.
"Nothing Kim." He said, shaking his head exasperatedly. She just didnt get it. He ran a hand over his head, that was covered by Latayas bandana.
"Hey, Marsh? I'll meet up with you later tonight, see ya later." DeShaun said, not wanting to see Kim.
"Whats wrong with HIM?" Kim asked, as DeShaun walked away.
"Well, since its ALL YOUR FAULT THAT OUR BEST FRIEND IS LIKE, IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL," Marshall raised his voice, feeling himself begin to lose his temper. His fuse had been short lately, and Kim just lit the end of it. "He just doesnt feel like looking you in the face, and I cant say that I blame him."
"Excuse ME?" She asked incredulously. "Are you saying that its my fault she tried to kill herself?"
"OH, is that what I JUST SAID?" He asked sarcastically.
"Ok, its not my fault your little friend there is a fucking PHYSCO. Im glad shes locked up, she can get the help she really needs, she should be locked up for good." Kim smirked.
Marshall bit his bottom lip and clenched his fists. Kim had no idea just how man that had made him, Marshall wanted to hit her so bad right now, but he wouldnt do that. "Kim, shes not fucking insane. She doesnt deserve to be in that place." He stated calmly. "She heard what you said about her in the hallway, she felt depressed that afternoon, tried to call me, and I hung up on her, because YOU were over my house."
"So, you LIED to me?" She asked.
"THIS ISNT ABOUT THAT!" He yelled, losing his patience completely. "HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TURN THIS SHIT ON ME?! ITS NOT MY FAULT YOUR A FUCKING INSANE WHORE!"
"Dont call ME a whore Marshall." Kim smirked. "Your little friend there,"
"SHE HAS A NAME!" He screamed, anger pulsing through him.
"Sorry, LATAYA, is the whore. Fucking everything that walks, you heard about her FATHER, didnt you?" Kim asked, staring him straight in the eye.
Marshalls jaw dropped. "How did you find out about that?"
"Dom used to go out with her, she doesnt know that he knows. Anyways, he told D'Angelo, who told Kerri, who told Sharon, who told Darnell, who I overheard telling Rhonda and Markus." She explained. Marshall just stared at her, his anger drained, now filled with something he couldnt describe. He felt horrible that probably most of the whole school knew about her dad, and she didnt even know it. But maybe it was better that she didnt, or else she would be really upset.
"Fuck." He muttered, looking at the ground.
"She probably enjoyed it, god knows that her father is the only one that would want her. Sick family if you ask me, we would be better off without people like her in this world yanno." Kim continued.
"Shut the fuck up."
"No." Kim said challengingly, poking him in the side of the head as hard as she could. Marshalls eyes widened and he did all he could to keep his hands at his side.
"Kim, get the fuck away from me NOW." He said, trying to stay as calm as he could.
"No Marshall, yanno this isnt MY fault. Im not babysitting her."
"She was having a hard enough time with her mom killing herself and the fact that Ryan was kissing her and she didnt want to be kissed and also the fact that I didnt listen to her and broke up with her because of the LIES THAT YOU TOLD ME, she was very upset. And then you go and tell me those things about her in the hallway the other day? SHE HEARD YOU!" He yelled.
"Thats not my problem." She said, holding her hands up. "Its YOUR fault."
"HOW THE FUCK IS THIS MY FAULT?!" 28 year old Marshall screamed.
"Well, maybe if you were home sometimes, you could spend some time with your DAUGHTER AND WIFE!" 25 year old Kim yelled, pacing the expensively decorated livingroom.
"Its not my fault, I have to make a fucking living!" He yelled.
"You should have finished high school you asshole! Maybe you could have a normal job, instead of being some RAPPER!" She mocked him. "Oh, Im slim SHADY, yeah Im the REAL slim shady and everyone IMITATES ME!" She yelled, mocking him. "Why cant you get a REAL job MArshall? Your too STUPID to do anything else but run around onstage making fun of Nsync! Thats all your good for you know!"
"Then why dont you fucking DIVORCE ME!?" He screamed. "Oh no wait, your afraid Im going to cut off your credit cards! Bitch!I should cut them off anyways! And I think I will." He said smugly. "They ARE in my name you know."
"If I divorce you, Im taking Hailie with me. And dont think that I wont for one second Marshall Mathers, not ONE SECOND. I will take her away from you SO fast you wont know what hit you." She threatened, walking up the stairs to the left of the living room door.
"Dont you walk away from me bitch!" Marshall yelled, following her. "You arent taking her anywhere, shes my kid too!"
"Oh, I dont think so, Im bringing her with me, theres no way Im leaving her ALONE with someone as IMMATURE as YOU are. Go fuck yourself!"
"Itd be better than fucking your fat ass again." He mumbled.
"What?!" She turned around on the stairs, towering above him, she was two steps ahead of him.
"I SAID, It would be better than fucking your FAT ASS again!" He yelled for the second time that day. She shook her head, biting her lip, and slapped him hard across the face.
"What the FUCK!" He yelled. "Dont you fucking TOUCH me you fucking WHORE!"
"Mommy? Daddy?" A scared sounding little girl around the age of 6 looked out of the doorway to her bedroom, her eyes wide. She was used to her parents fighting, but she had never seen her mommy hit her daddy before.
"Hai, sweetey? Go back in your room baby." Marshall said in a soft voice, as if letting Hailie know that he was alright and that she shouldnt be scared. His mood suddenly brightened at the site of his daughter. She was the reason he was alive today. And the whole reason that he put up with Kim in the first place.
"No Hailie." Kim said as Hailie started backing into her room. "Stay here, you can see that your father isnt the great guy that you think he is." She said, her eyes staring intently into Marshalls blue eyes that were swimming with anger. "Hes being bad."
"Kim dont tell her that, what the fu-" He noticed Hailie out of the corner of his eye and stopped short of swearing. "Leave her out of this."
"Why dont you leave Marshall?" Kim asked, raising both eyebrows. "No one wants you here anyways. Right Hailie?" She asked.
Hailie looked at her mommy, and then at her daddy. Her dad was looking at her, and she looked up at him, making eye contact with him. She didnt say anything, she hated getting caught in the middle of these things, no matter what she said she would feel bad. If she agreed with her mommy, she would be lying because she loved her daddy and he was never home, so when he was home she wanted him to stay home, but if she didnt agree with her mommy, her mommy would get really mad.
"Kim, leave her out of this." Marshall said sternly, he could tell that Hailie didnt want him to leave, but didnt want to disagree with Kim, she was scared, and a 6 year old should not be scared of their mother.
"No Marshall. Get out now. We dont want you here."
"Kim, Im cutting your credit cards if you make me leave my own house. What are we even fighting over this time!?" He asked, throwing his hands in the air.
"We are fighting over how STUPID you are, what else is new? And if you dare cut the credit cards dont think that your gonna see your kid anymore. So if Hailie means anything to you, dont do it, and get out." She said, holding her head up, knowing he was going to back down as always.
"Fine Kim. Fine." He said, holding his hands up in surrender as she grinned in triumpth. "Ill leave. Ok? Ill friggen leave." He was careful not to swear with Hailie right there.
"Hmm, good. Ill go check you into a hotel, and you better be there when I call you tonight, dont go fuck some bitch at a bar, you asshole." She warned, pushing him slightly in the chest and walking down the stairs towards the kitchen to get the phone.
Marshall sighed. She was swearing and Hailie was right here, and Kim said that she learned bad things from HIM? He smirked and walked over towards Hailie. "C'mon baby girl." He said, lifting her up and putting her over his shoulder. She giggled and grabbed onto the back of his shirt for support, and he kept an arm around her legs, and walked towards the bedroom. "You can help me pack."
"I dont want you to go Daddy." She protested.
"Me either kid, but mommy is mad at Daddy." He explained, tossing her down on the bed as she laughed. "So Daddy has to go away for a while, just at night though, you can come down to the studio with me tommorow, you like that?"
"Yeah!" she chirped.
"Its a date then." He said, pulling a suitcase from the closet and tossing it to the bed next to Hailie, sitting crosslegged, playing with her shoelace as she watched him.
"Are you leaving now?" She asked, as he put some clothes into the suitcase.
"Very soon sweety, very soon." He said distractedly, putting more clothes into the suitcase and walking into the bathroom. He came out a minute later with his toothbrush, shaving cream, a razor, aftershave and a bottle of his cologne, and put those into the suitcase as well. Almost immediatly, Hailie reached into the suitcase and looked through his stuff, finding his razor the most interesting, she lifted it up and inspected it.
"Whats this for?" She asked, turning it over in her small hands.
"Shaving, put that down its sharp." He said, glancing at her. She didnt put it down, instead continued looking it over. "Hailie, put it down." He repeated. He stared at her long enough to watch her return the razor to the suitcase and went back to taking clothes out from the closet.
"Marshall?" Kim asked, walking into the bedroom. "I got your room reserved, you can LEAVE anytime now." She said, glancing at Hailie on the bed.
"Yeah, Im going." He said, throwing a jacket into the suitcase and closing it. "Im taking Hailie to the studio with me tommorow, just to let you know."
"Not if your attitude doesnt improve." She said, looking him up and down dissaprovingly.
"Ok mom." He said sarcastically, grabbing something off the dresser.
"Get, out, now." She said slowly.
"Im leaving, Im leaving." He said, tying a black bandana with a white design on the front, around his head and pulling a hat on over it. He leaned down and kissed Hailie on the cheek, and she hugged him tightly. "Bye, Hai. I love you." He said, grinning as she kissed his cheek back.
"I love you too daddy." She replied, her voice soft. She let him go and he stood up, grabbing the suitcase and fixing his hat so that it turned slightly to the side.
"Bye Kim." He said, walking out of the room. Kim sighed and walked over to the bed, picking Hailie up and then followed him down the front door.
"What?" She asked. "No, 'I love you Kim'?"
"Oh, I didnt know you wanted me to lie to you, ok I love you Kim." He said, walking out the front door and slamming it shut behind him.
Sometimes he didnt know why he even put up with Kim, and then everytime he saw Hailie, he rememebered why. He did everything for Hailie, she was everything to him, his whole world. Kim didnt understand that. She just understood that she should always be the center of attention, and if she wasnt, she would do something to be.
Last summer when things were hectic, he was on tour on the up in smoke tour with Dr Dre, and he was just starting to get really big. The Marshall Mathers Lp was a success, parties were being thrown, and Kim couldnt take it that from now on people knew her as, Eminems wife. She was used to be Kim. And she was used to Marshall being, 'Kims boyfriend'. So what did Kim do? She rememebered all the attention that Lataya Woodson got, back in 10th grade, and she slit her wrists.
She couldnt handle not being everything to Marshall, and alot of the time, made it so that if she wasnt everything to Marshall, than he couldnt be anything to Hailie. Countless times through their relationship had she thrown him out, most of the time he wasnt lucky enough to have somewhere to go, and slept in his car or at DeShauns house or something, all because he wasnt giving her attention. He was at work to much, and he wasnt making enough money to buy her an engagement ring, or she needed new clothes, and he only had enough moeny for food and Hailies diapers, and she hated it.
She was going to leave him, right before he made it big, but then for some reason that he was pretty sure that he could figure out, she decided that it wasnt so bad being married to Marshall Mathers anyways. That was when he started making alot of money.
He sighed and got into the car, shifting into gear and pulling out into the driveway, and drove down the street towards the hotel he was staying at. He didnt know how long he had to stay in this hotel for, but he knew that he hated this. She would bug him to come home form tour, or LA or something, and then when he did, she made him stay in a hotel because she couldnt stand 2 minutes being in the same room as him without starting a fight. It had been that way always, and he didnt know why he stuck around that long.
Mostly because all through high school she was Kim, and no one else had asked him out, and he was immature, and he didnt know any better so he stuck himself with Kim. Then he got a little older and tried to leave her but she had this rope around him that she could bring him back to her whenever she wanted him. She knew him too well, she knew what he hated, she knew what he loved, she knew what he wanted, and what he needed, and she would make him stay with her by using all those factors.
Then Hailie was born. And what could he do? He cant leave Hailie, he loves Hailie. He wouldnt do something his father had done, he was gonna do the responsible thing. And he stayed with Kim. He stayed with Kim and let Kim ruin his life. And now he was rich and famous, with the best life in the world, one would think. But he was miserable. He should be happy, but money couldnt buy happiness. He thought he loved Kim, but she treated him so bad, and he couldnt help but stay with her, he loved her, right? And he loved Hailie, and he wouldnt give Hailie up for anything.
So he was stuck with Kim. Which wasnt so bad. She was hot, she could be nice when she wanted to, and she could cook. So what was he complaining for? Maybe it was because he could do better, and he had.
