Prologue
"Uncle Kenny?" 7 year old Jennifer looked up at her uncle with wide blue eyes. She stood next to the leather recliner he was sitting in, and stared at him until he answered her.
"What?" Kenny asked sharply. Jennifer backed up a little bit, in fear.
"When is my Daddy coming to get me?" She asked quietly.
"Uh, why?" Kenny asked, again.
Jennifer hesitated. "I'm bored, and I want to go home and play with my toys." She watched as he rubbed his face tiredly.
"Well, uh, hes on his way, I guess. Why dont you go get me a beer?"
"Kay." Jennifer sighed and walked into the kitchen. She sometimes wondered why her uncle Kenny drank so much beer. Her Daddy didnt drink half as much as he did.
She pulled the heavey door open and gazed into the stocked fridge. A few frozen dinners were on the bottom shelf, the rest of the shelves were packed with various types of beer, Heineken, Bud, Corona, Coors and just about any kind of beer imaginable. She looked at them for a few seconds before selecting a Corona.
She shut the fridge, hearing the bottles rattle as the fridge shook and retreated back to the living room with the bottle in her hand. Kennys livingroom was small and simple, a worn black leather recliner in the middle of it, rips and tears scattered about it. A small television set was on a metal card table, beer bottles littered the sides of it. Beside the recliner was a wooden table with more beer cans and bottles, an ashtray a tv dinner, half eaten with the fork still in it and candy wrappers strewn about on it. Clothes and other items were carelessly forgotten on the floor. The wall paper was peeling and grey from all the smoking that Kenny had done.
She handed him the beer and he opened it, gulping half of it down. She stood there, staring at him until he glanced at her.
"What?" He asked clearly annoyed. She sighed. "You want some?" He held the beer out towards her, and she frowned, looking up at him.
"Arent," She hesitated. "Arent you going to, say 'Thank you'?"
"Uh," Kenny looked at her for a second. "Thank you." He mumbled distractedly , turning back to the tv. Jennifer sighed and looked at the tv, watching people do skateboard tricks on ramp.
A few seconds later a knock sounded and Kenny stood up, setting the beer down on the crowded table as he looked through the peephole to see who was there. Jennifer climbed up into chair and reached for remote flipping through channels, hoping to find cartoons.
Kenny opened the door once he saw it was his brother, Jeff. Jeff stepped in and checked his watch, then looked up at Kenny, and then at Jennifer in the chair.
"Hey man." Jeff said. "How was she?"
"Fine. Hey listen, my rent was due Monday, and Im short 20 bucks. Think you could loan me some?"
"Monday?!" Jeff exclaimed. "You know you better start paying your rent, before you get yourself evicted. Its Thursday!"
"I know, thats why I need 20! I'll pay you back."
"Man," Jeff grumbled, digging through his pocket. "You always say that shit, but it never happens." He pulled out a 20 and gave it to Kenny.
"Man, thanks. I'll pay you back. I Swear." Kenny said gratefully.
"You better." Jeff sighed.
Jennifer put the channel on MTV, and stopped as she saw Brian McFayden doing the news. She liked him, she thought he was cute.
"This is Brian McFayden with MTV news. We caught up with female rap sensation, Renae Mathers, and she had news on her new album, due out this coming spring. Heres what she had to say." By this time, both men had haulted their conversation at the mention of Renaes name. They watched the tv intently, as Renae appeared in front of a black background.
"Well, the album! See thats the only thing..." Renae laughed lightly. "I sort of took a break from recording it because, as you might know I had a baby just a few months back, and I also just got married two months ago. So I havent started recording it yet, but Im supposed to go into the studio sometime next month." Brian McFayden cut into it right before she said anything else, and closed the news, and Jennifer flipped the channel, totally oblivious to the fact that Renae was her aunt.
"Well, well, well." Kenny grinned at the tv and then at Jeff. "She actually married that asshole. I aint think she would go through with it. Shes kinda hot now..."
Jeff rolled his eyes and pushed Kenny into the kitchen, away from Jennifer. "Dont swear around my daughter, and RENAE IS OUR SISTER, dont ever call her hot again, please. At least not near me. And how would you know if hes an asshole? He could be a nice guy." Jeff defended. "Renae is a good judge of character, after all, she doesnt bother with YOU anymore. She obviously has taste."
"Funny, funny, funny." Kenny mocked. "Ive met him. Last year, he was hanging around on Arianas porch, Renae was inside, I didnt see her. I was on my way to Diegos, and I said I was a fan. We talked and-"
"And?"
"And- He was telling me how he beat Renae and shit. I mean, he sounded pretty proud of it too." Kenny lied.
"Your full of shit." Jeff said, taking a beer from Kennys fridge and sitting down at the table on a metal folding chair. Kenny lit a ciggarette and shook his head. "Thats a stupid rumor that Christina Aguilera made up last year, and if I remember correctly, Renae went on MTV and said that if Christina was so fascinated with people beating other people up, Renae said she was glad to beat the living shit out of her. Thats our little sister." He grinned proudly. "I dont think that Eminem beats her."
"Swear to god. Hes an asshole." Kenny took a beer and sat across from him. "I'm not playin' around."
"Renae wouldnt be with someone abusive, not after Dad hurt her so much." Jeff insisted.
"Well she is." Kenny leaned back in the chair and put his feet on the table. "I think we should do something about it."
"What are you smoking?" Jeff asked incredulously. "We havent talked to her in 5 years, since she moved to California to get her record deal with that Doctor guy."
"Dr Dre, and yes, dumbass. I know that."
"So, how are we- uh, how are YOU going to do something about it." Jeff asked skeptically.
"I dont know. Maybe I can call her, and go visit her, spend some time there with her...And she might start to trust me again."
"She wont let you go." Jeff said quickly. "She dont want you there."
"She wont say no, shes our baby sister. She never said no to us for anything before, she cant say no to people, shes too...Nice." He shrugged.
"You took advantage of that, if I remember correctly."
"Shut up, anyways, Ill bring someone with me...Maybe Laura, from the bar. She'll do shit for money. We'll go down there, visit Renae for a few days and introduce Renae to the dick her husband really is."
"How you gonna do that?" Jeff smirked. He didnt think Kenny was cabable of any of this, little did he know that he was wrong.
"I'll have Laura seduce Eminem, and then find some way for Renae to catch them. You KNOW she will flip the fuck out after what happened between her and her old boyfriend, what was his name, uh, Andy. Anyways, that'll be the end of their relationship." Kenny grinned evilly.
"I dont know, sounds kind of...Faulty. What if Em dont want Laura?"
"Then, hes a good guy, and we'll leave them alone. But come on, who wouldnt want Laura?" Kenny smirked.
Laura was a girl from the bar that Kenny worked weekends at. She had curly blonde hair, past her shoulders, creamy skin, big green eyes and a curvy body. Guys obsessed over her. She knew how to act, and what to say, and it drove men nuts. She wore skimpy, skin tight clothes and just the right amount of makeup, any guy would kill to hit that.
"True, True." Jeff agreed.
"You in then?"
"Why do you need me?" Jeff asked wearily.
"Well, you can get her number from Mike. You know Mike wont talk to me, after that...incident with the car."
"Oh yeah, how you STOLE his car, and then got in an accident?" Jeff raised an eyebrow.
"Shut up." Kenny waved a hand at him and put the ciggarrette out in the ashtray. He looked up at Jeff. "Well? You in?"
"I guess so." Jeff shrugged. Kenny grinned. "Its not like I have much of a choice, either you get what you want, or I get bugged for the next, however long until you get some new crazy idea."
"Damn right. Get the number from Mike tonight, and call me." Kenny lit up another ciggarette.
"Chain smoker."
"And proud of it. Call me tonight with the number and dont tell Mike about the plan."
"The plan?" Jeff laughed. "I dont have time for this shit. I'll call you later." He stood up and set the beer down.
"Jennifer! We're leaving!" He yelled.
"Kay Daddy!" She called from the other room.
"Thanks for watching her, Kenny." He nodded.
"No problem at all." He said as they walked into the living room. Jennifer stood up and walked over to them, grabbing her jacket off the chair on her way to follow her daddy outside.
Kenny grinned as he watched them leave, then shut the door behind them. He walked over to his chair and sat down, stretching out comfortably. Kenny couldnt wait to call Renae, and what he would give to see the look on her face when she found out it was him, it would be priceless. He couldnt wait to ruin Renaes fairy tale perfect life, he loved to ruin anything that Renae had good going for her in her life. It gave him some kind of sick pleasure to know that she was depressed, and it made him even more happier when he was the cause of it. He hated it when she was happy, when she was successful, when she did something good. Now he had the chance that he needed to ruin her life once again, and he wasnt going to screw it up.
Renae sighed contentedly and closed her eyes, her head rested in Marshalls lap as he watched a movie on Tv, and she tried to fall asleep. She was holding a small black and tan puppy, that was barely 10 weeks old.
Its name was Sally and she was barely 12 weeks old yet, still just a baby. They had goten her for a wedding present from one of their friends. Marshall refused to believe that it was a dog, he said that she was a rat, but Renae felt bad for her.
She was stroking its smooth fur coat and trying to relax, she had a major headache, and even though it was only 8 o clock, she wanted to sleep. Marshall had talked her into falling asleep on the couch while he watched Tv.
She let her thoughts roam as Marshalls fingers trailed through her hair gently. She thought about Marshall, and how much she loved him, and she thought about little Marshall, and how glad she was that he wasnt Johns. She never thought she would have a baby, she never thought she would get married, but here she was, married and with a baby. That thought made her so completely happy, happy that for the first time in her life, she had a family. Not the disfunctional one where her father would beat her and then when her brothers neglected her and she was left on her own at age 12 to defend herself in NYC.
She opened her eyes and looked up at Marshall. He looked so calm and peaceful, so happy, so UNLIKE his image portrayed. He was such a good husband, and an even better father. He was great with Hailie and little Marshall, and it was obvious how much he loved them both. She smiled as she thought of him, feeling a wave of affection hit her full on. Life couldnt get much better then this, and as long as she had Marshall, life couldnt get worse. Or...could it?
She was brought out of her thoughts as the phone rang on an end table. Marshall glanced down at her and then reached for the phone. She sighed and closed her eyes again, listening to his voice.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Hey, is this, Eminem?" A voice asked.
"Look, would you people stop calling my house? Im glad your a fan and everything but, how did you get this number, and please stop calling." He was about to hang it up when he heard the voice speak again.
"Naw, wait! This is Kenny Patton. Renaes older brother." Marshall raised an eyebrow and put the phone to his ear again.
"Kenny Patton?" Marshall asked suspiciously. At the mention of her brothers name, Renae bolted upright, and watched the puppy jump off her lap and onto the floor, obviously startled at the sudden movement, and then she turned to look at Marshall with wide eyes.
"What?!" Renae exclaimed, suddenly feeling sick. Why was he calling? How did he get the number, and what did he want?
"Can I talk to her?" Kenny asked.
"Uh, huh." Marshall grunted, handing the phone to Renae. Renae took a deep breath and pushed the phone back at him.
"I dont want it!" She whispered loudly. "Tell him Im not here! I dont want to talk to-" Marshall put the phone up to her face and she scowled at him. "Hello?" She said politely.
"Renae? This is Kenny!"
"Uh, Kenny? Did something happen to Dad?"
"No. Hes fine. I just talked to him yesterday."
"Oh, aight. How did you get this number?" She asked carefully.
"Mike." He said simply.
"Ohh..." Renae made a mental note to slap Mike the next time she saw him. "Cool..."
"Yeah, I heard you were down in NYC last year." He said casually. "Whats up with visiting Diego, and not your brothers and father?"
"I didnt visit Diego." She said coldly. "I visited Ri, who happens to live downstairs from him, and he came out one day while I was sitting out there. I didnt want to see him, and if I had known he would have been out there, I would have stayed inside."
"Sure. You always did have something for him..."
"Something for him? What the fuck? If I ever had something for him, I would throw myself off the empire statebuilding and hope to catch my eyelid on a nail." She replied sharply, and slapped Marshall on the shoulder as she heard him laugh.
"Ah well. Why aint you visit Dad?"
"Same reason I didnt visit you."
"Well I was thinking about that. See, me and my girlfriend are looking to take some time off work, and go on like a little vacation thing. And since I havent seen you in 5 years, I was thinking maybe we could come visit you." Kenny said, finally getting to the point of his call.
"You, you want to visit me?" Renae asked, glancing at Marshall for some sort of help on this. Marshall just watched her. "Um, hold on." She put her hand over the phone and whined. "MARSHALL! He wants to come visit me...with his girlfriend or something. What should I say?"
"What do you want to say?" He asked in return. "Um, I dont know." Renae sighed and leaned against him and put the phone up to the side of her face that was further from Marshall. "Kenny, I dont think its such a good idea..."
"Aw, come on Renae, your my baby sister, I love you." He said, knowing that it would get her. He heard her sigh into the phone. "You know if you needed anything, you could ask me. And if you ever wanted to visit me, I wouldnt think twice. Plus, Ive changed. Im alot different then I was back then. Come on."
"Well, I dont know..." Renae hesitated. She WAS his little sister, and she had to admit that, although however fucked up he was, and no matter how much he hurt her, she still did love him.
"Come on! It'll be fun. Im dying to meet this Eminem guy. And see the new baby. I want to see my nephew, come on Renae." He coaxed.
Renae gave one helpless look at Marshall before sighing. "Fine. When are you coming?"
"When CAN I come?" He returned.
She hesitated. "Um, hold on." She looked over at Marshall. "When can he come?"
"Hes coming? I dont care when he comes." Marshall shrugged. "Its YOUR brother."
"Ugh," She groaned. "What about this weekend?"
"I took this coming week off to be with you and Hailie and Marsh. So I dont care, whatever." Marshall shook his head.
"Aight..." Renae put the phone back to her ear. "What about Saturday?"
"Thats perfect. We'll see you then, Call you tommorow to get directions and shit." Kenny said. "Bye."
"See ya." Renae hung up and looked at Marshall. "Literally."
"Why did you say yes, if you dont want to see him?"
"Kuz, hes my brother." Renae said, laying back down, her head in his lap. "I know, its crazy, but, I dont know. A part of me wants to see him."
"Yeah."
"He said that he changed, and I dont know, maybe he has, but like, I just wanna see for myself." She shrugged. "But, you'll be here, right? The whole time? Dont leave me alone with him, okay?"
"Aight, are you scared of him?" Marshall asked.
"To be completely honest, yes. A little bit." She sighed. Marshall smiled and ran his fingers through her hair.
"I'll be here." He shook his head. "What are you scared of?"
"I dont know, just, when I was little, he wasnt very nice to me, you know? He, hit me sometimes, when Jeff and Mike werent around, and when I started working and got a job waitressing, he stole my money. He was just an all around fucking dick if there ever was one."
"Asshole."
"I know."
"Your letting him come here?"
"Uh-huh. Dont really have a choice you know?"
"Course you do." He replied.
"Naw, I dont. See, if I said no, I would feel really bad. And, then I would go on a guilt trip and shit, its just not worth it." She explained.
"This is going to be real fun." Marshall said sarcastically.
"Oh yeah." Renae replied, sighing and letting on of her hands dangle off the side of the ouch so that the puppy could come and sit by her and get petted. She closed her eyes and let herself fall asleep as Marshall went back to watching Tv and playing with her hair. HOME
