Broken

Epilogue

/Its over and done/

/But the heartache lives on inside/

"Okay, Marshall. Heres the papers." Paul pushed the divorce papers towards him, and Marshall bit the inside of his cheek, and slowly reached for the pen in front of him. Holding it in his left hand, he put his right hand on the paper to hold it still, and looked down at the papers.

The familiar writing that would break the bonds of marraige. He had to do this with Kim, and now with Renae. He never thought it would come down to this though. He glanced back up at Paul, and then back down at the paper and hesitated before writing the first few letters of his name on the dotted line.

/And who is the one your clinging to/

/Instead of me tonight/

He couldnt stand the thought of being with someone else, not after he had Renae. She was so perfect, he couldnt picture himself finding anyone else as good as her, and it hurt him to realize that he wouldnt be the only one dating other people, she would have guys lined up after her.

He couldnt stand to think of her being with someone other then him, and now he knew how she felt when she had walked in on him and Laura, and then found out about him and Kim, and he wanted to break something. Anger built up inside of him, anger towards himself, anger towards Laura, anger towards Kim, towards Kenny, towards Renae, towards everything. He just wanted things back to normal, back to the way they were before all this shit happened.

/And where are you now?/

/Now that I need you?/

The day that she felt, kept playing itself over and over in his mind. The thing that stood out most of all was-

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"But, I still love you." He choked out, racking his brain for any possible reason that she shouldnt divorce him, any reason she should stay with him.
"You love me?"
"More then anything."
"Then let me go." She requested quietly.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He realized that letting go was all that he could do, no matter how much it hurt him, he had to do it. He had to be strong and he had to move on, and the sooner the better. He couldnt dwell on the past, nor did he want to.
/Tears on my pillow/
/Where ever you go/
He read the last couple lines of the paper to himself,
There has been a breakdown in the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no likelihood that the marriage can be preserved.
Sighing he had to admit that he agreed with the paper, there didnt seem to be a chance that he could keep her with him, as much as he wanted to, and as much as that hurt him. He knew it was beyond control. He didnt want her to stay with him if she wasnt happy, he didnt want her to do anything she didnt want to. It would be selfish of him to keep her there with him so that he could be happy. And plus, he wouldnt be happy is she wasnt.
/I'll cry me a river/
/That leads to your ocean/
/You'll never see me fall apart/
Bringing the pen to the paper, he signed his name quickly and handed the paper to Paul, to fax to Renaes lawyers office, where she would sign it, and the marraige would be over. Figuratively speaking, the marraige already was over, it just needed to be finalized. He took a deep breath and tried to be calm. He couldnt believe it was really over.
/In the words of a broken heart its just emotion/
/Taking me over/
/Caught up in sorrow lost in the song/
"You alright?" Proof asked. He had called Marshall that night.
Marshall swallowed hard and nodded, even though Proof was on the phone and couldnt see him. "Yeah, I'll be fine. I have to be."
/But if you dont come back, come home to me darling/
/Dontcha know theres nobody left in this world to hold me tight/
/Dontcha know theres nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight/
"Okay, If you need anything, just let me know what I can do. Im sorry man." Proof said quietly, feeling bad for what had went on between Marshall and Renae.
"Aight. Have you talked to her at all?" He asked, trying to sound like it was no big deal and that he didnt really care, but they both knew better.
"Yeah." He said shortly.
"And?"
"Shes doing good, well, as good as can be expected." He shrugged.
"Oh." Marshall looked down at the floor, she probably hadnt given so much thought to it, she was probably to mad at him to care. He sighed.
/Im there at your side/
/A part of all the things you are/
"Renae?" Her lawyer, Mark Kostella, handed her the pen and she looked up. Staring at the pen as though it were deadly, she carefully reached out and took it from him. "Ready to sign these divorce papers?"
"Yeah." She coughed and look down at the papers in front of her. The divorce papers between her and Marshall. All that was left, was to sign them. They had decided on getting joint custody for little Marshall, agreeing that it would be best. Of course, later they would have to change it, once he was older, because he would need a more stable enviroment to grow up in.
/But you gotta find someone else who/
/You gotta go find your shining star/
Bringing the pen down to the paper she wondered what happened to make the marraige fall apart like that. Even though he was the one that cheated on her, twice, she blamed herself. Maybe she wasnt giving him what he wanted, maybe he wasnt happy with her, maybe he needed someone else. Someone else that could give him what she couldnt.
Reading the papers over once more carefully, she realized that this was so final, so lasting. It couldnt be taken back so easily. She shook the thought. She didnt want to take it back. She wanted this divorce. She wanted to be with someone who would never cheat on her, never hurt her like Marshall had. But then again she wanted Marshall. This was hard.
/And where are you now?/
/Now that I need you?/
She still loved Marshall, even though she acted like she didnt. She tried to hide her feelings, and it wasnt working. She loved him so much, he was her life. Her happiest moments meant nothing to her if he wasnt there to share it with her. She was so proud to be his girl, proud to be able to say that her name was Renae Mathers. She never wanted to leave him, and she really did think that their marraige would last forever. She didnt know if she could live without him.
/Tears on my pillow/
/Where ever you go/
She had found an apartment in Los Angeles, California. She didnt want to live back in New York where she grew up. She wanted to leave all those memories behind. She didnt want to risk seeing Kenny, or Laura, or even Jeff. No one had any idea how muchthis divorce was hurting her, not even herself.
She kept telling herself that she could get on without him, that she had before and that things would be like they had been. But she didnt know what was worse, never knowing what it was like to be happy, or knowing it was like but never finding it again. She couldnt let him know she felt this way. For some reason she only felt anger and hate when she saw him face to face. But when she saw him on tv she felt like she wanted to cry. She didnt know what was wrong with her.
/I'll cry me a river/
/That leads to your ocean/
/You'll never see me fall apart/
She gazed down at his signiture on the paper, it looked so smooth, his Ms were bigger then the rest of the letters, and the S on the end as curled up and backwards to cross the T in Mathers, it was so calm, beautiful and graceful, like he was. She wondered if he had this much trouble. Of course he had, he was totally apposed to this, and it took her a while to get him to finally agree on signing it. It felt like he hadnt accepted that they were going to do this, he kept asking if she was sure, if she was positive that she was sure that she wanted to do this, and she kept saying yes. She wanted this, she was just scared.
/In the words of a broken heart its just emotion/
/Taking me over/
/Caught up in sorrow, lost in the song/
"Renae? Are you going to sign the papers?" Mark asked. She looked up at him and then back down at the document in front of her.
Slowly, she shook her head. "No, no, I cant do this. I cant, I cant do that." She stuttered, throwing the pen down, and standing up, storming out of the office.
/But if you dont come back, come home to me darling/
/Dontcha know theres nobody left in this world to hold me tight/
/Dontcha know theres nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight/
