Chapter 9
"Hey, Kim." Marshall said, sighing. He handed Hailies duffel bag to her and Kim put it in the hallway of the huge mansion that Marshall paid for. Kim didnt work, she never had and she probably never would, as long as Marshall had to pay his ass out for child support.
"Hey, Marshall." Kim stood, hands in her back pockets, looking at him. "You look pleasant today."
"Dad and Renae had a fight." Hailie announced, walking in the house, past her parents and running into the living room to put the tv on.
"You did? What did she do?" Kim asked with interest.
"She didnt do anything. I did something." He replied, looking down, hands in his jacket pocket.
"Well, what did you do?" She asked.
"I fucked her brothers girlfriend..." He trailed off and Kim held back her laughter.
"You never could keep your dick where it belonged. You were ALWAYS cheating on me." She rolled her eyes. He scowled at her.
"Well, you cheated on me too." He defended.
"Oh yeah? At least I wasnt stupid enough to get caught." She smirked.
"Oh yeah? What about John?" He asked.
"Well, what about Kessia?" She asked. "Or Ashley?"
"Ugh, would you please for once just not remember every little thing?" He sighed and shook his head. "I dont feel like talking about this. Not right now, not with you."
"Aw, hun," She cooed.
"Dont call me that." He replied automatically.
She ignored him. "You look like your about to cry." He shrugged and took a step backwards. "Are you guys alright?"
"No." He shook his head. "She wanted me to leave. I think its over." He said in a shaky voice.
"Ohhh." She put her arms out and pulled him into a hug. He didnt pull away but he didnt return it either. He just stood there and let him hug her, and when she pulled away he looked at her.
"Hailie!" He yelled. "Come say bye babe! Im leaving!" He called in to her.
"Wait, why dont you stay for dinner?" Kim asked, as Hailie skidded out from the living room and into the front hall.
"Yeah! Dad, can you?!" Hailie exclaimed. "Please?!"
"Uh, I dont know," He hesitated. He didnt want to be around Kim right now, he was already having a bad night and he didnt need her to make it worse for him, but he hadnt gotten to spend alot of time with Hailie this weekend, and had to cut it short. He didnt know what to say.
"Please Dad? You never eat dinner with us anymore!" Hailie pleaded. He looked down at her as she grabbed his hand and stared up at her. How could he refuse those eyes?
"Yeah, c'mon Marshall. Eat dinner with your family." Kim said. His eyes narrowed.
"Your not my family anymore Kim. Your nothing to me. Your just my babys momma. Yor a fucking memory. Hailie is my family, and I will stay and eat dinner with her. But I aint here for you, so dont even think about it." He said. He looked down at Hailie. "Yeah, baby. I'll stay."
"YES!" Hailie grinned. "Mom, whats for dinner?" She turned around and looked up at Kim.
"Uh, well I wasnt expecting you home tonight, so...I didnt plan anything. What about...Spegghetti?" She suggested. Hailie nodded and Marshall shrugged. "Great, Ill go make some. Marshall, come help me in the kitchen?"
"Uh, alright." Marshall said, following her. Hailie smiled and ran into the living room to watch cartoons.
"So, Marshall...You think its over huh?" Kim asked, reaching up into the cabinet to grab a box of spegghetti.
"Yeah, I fucked up, real bad." He sat down at the table and looked down.
"Aw, Im sorry." She said sincerely. He looked up at her as she put some water in a pot to boil. She was beautiful, thin, natural blonde, nice body, big boobs that he paid for, even though he said he wasnt going to. She was really pretty, makeup flawlessly done, the only thing wrong with her was her attitude. It was a shame. Perfect looks werent everything.
"Yeah." He quickly looked back down at the table as she turned around.
"You know Marshall," She turned to him. "Your always welcome to come here."
"Hm, thats funny, cause when I was married to you, I was NEVER welcomed here." He looked up at her.
"Well, we have both changed. For the better." Kim said, walking behind him and putting her hands on his shoulders. "Your muscles are all tense. Here let me give you a massage." She said, rubbing his shoulders and back.
He wanted to pull away, get up and leave, but he didnt. It was like the old times, when he would be stresed out, and she would give him a massage. And it felt so good. He bent his head down, exposing his neck for her to massage. She took the invitation and rubbed his neck. He sighed and closed his eyes, this felt really good. Thought didnt even register that this was KIM. His Ex Wife. The Ex wife that had sued him, cheated on him, purposely tried to piss him off. As soon as he realized that it was her, he put his head up and pulled away from her quickly. What was he doing?
"Whats the matter baby?" Kim asked. He shook his head. He didnt want to be here. He wanted to go home with Renae. He didnt want Kim to rub his back, he wanted Renae to. He didnt want Kim cooking his dinner, he wanted, well, he wanted Renae to order out for his dinner. He didnt want Kim, he wanted Renae.
"Nothing. Im just tired, its all." He shook his head again.
"Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it?" She asked softly.
He did want to talk about it, just not with her. He wanted to go home and talk to Renae about it. He would give anything for her to call him right now. He reached into his pocket, to make sure that his cell phone was on, just incase. His eyes widened as he couldnt find it. Had he lost it again? Naw, he had it this morning, and he put it down on the kitchen counter and let it charge...
"SHIT!" He cursed loudly and Kim jumped back, startled.
"What? Whats the matter?" She asked quickly.
"I fucking left my cell phone at home, so if Renae needs to call me, she cant. Fuck." He put his elbows on the table and rested his head in his hands, feeling overwhelmed, stressed out and pissed off.
"Well, what about your pager?" She asked.
"I lost it, last week when I was in california."
"You were always losing your pager and your cell phone." She said, sitting down beside him at the table and putting a hand on his shoulder. "It'll be okay." She reassured him. He shook his head.
A few minutes of silence went by until the phone rang, causing Marshall to jump, at the sudden ring. "Shit." He mumbled.
"Relax, its just the phone." She said softly, getting up and walking over to the phone.
Renae ran up into the bedroom, and grabbed the phone up off the bed. She quickly dialed Marshalls cell phone number, only to find that it was turned off. A thing came up, asking if she wanted to leave a voice mail, she sighed and shut the phone off. Where else could she call? He lost his pager, his cell phone was turned off, she didnt know the name he was under at the hotel. The only place she could think that he could possibly be, was at Kims.
She didnt want to call there. Kim would give her shit, for sure. Kim had made it obvious the first time that they met, that she didnt like Renae at all. Renae hated it when she had to see or talk to Kim, she understood why Kim didnt like her, she was jealous of her. Because Kim didnt know what she had until she lost it.
She had always taken Marshall for granted, and then when they got divorced, and he met Renae, she lost all hope of getting back together with him. And that bothered her. She had always tried to control him, and it had worked, until finally he realized he didnt need Kim.
She sighed, finding that talking to Marshall was more important then her wishes to avoid Kim at any costs. She looked on the back of the phone at the speeddial list, and saw Kims number was number 5. She pressed 5 and speed dialed Kims house, praying that Marshall would be there still. If she hurried, he might not have left.
After about 2 rings, Kim picked up.
"Hello?" She sounded annoyed, and she was. She was trying to talk to Marshall, hoping that they would get back together. She still hadnt accepted the fact that he didnt love her anymore.
"Hey, Kim? Its Renae." Renae said shyly.
"Oh, hi." Kim said, without any enthusiasm.
"Hey, Im sorry to have to bother you, but is Marshall there?"
"Uh," Kim glanced at Marshall, sitting at the table with his head down on the table, mumbling something to himself. She turned her back to him and leaned against the wall. "Nope."
"Hes not?" Renae started getting slightly worried. "He dropped Hailie off though, right? Because he left more then 45 minutes ago..."
"Yeah, he did." She said quietly.
"Okay, well listen, do you know where he might be?" She asked.
"No." Kim said flatly.
"Shit, well, if he calls to talk to Hailie, or if you hear from him at all, could you tell him that I want him to call? Its important."
"Alright. I will." She lied.
"Thanks Kim." Renae sighed. "Bye."
"Bye." Kim said, and hung up the phone. "Bitch." She mumbled.
"Who was that?" Marshall looked up, hearing her mumble something.
"No, one, just uh, my cousin." Kim lied, and went to pour the spegghetti into the boiling water.
"Oh my god." Renae closed her eyes tightly and held onto the phone, sitting down on the bed and begining to cry again. She should have listened to him when he told her what name he was going to be under at the hotel, but she didnt. She wanted to lay down and die, right now. She felt like shit, she probably looked like shit, and she didnt have Marshall here to make everything okay again.
The phone rang, startling her, and interrupting her thoughts of self hatred. Hoping it could be Marshall she picked up on the first ring.
"Baby?" She asked hopefully.
"Hey sweetie!" She sighed and fell backwards as she realized it was Proof, not Marshall.
"Hi." She said, feeling disheartened.
"Its nice to hear from you too." He said sarcastically. "Whats with you answering the phone like that?"
"I was hoping that you were Marshall." She said, flipping onto her stomach and holding the phone to her ear as she propped herself up on her elbows.
"Wheres he at?" He asked.
"I dont know." She admitted. "Proof, I need to talk to you." She loved talking to Proof, he was one of the most level headed people that she knew, and he always had an opinion on everything, and wasnt afraid to admit it. He gave the best advice she could ever get, and it always seemed to work. Except for one time, but you cant win them all.
"Shoot." He said.
"Okay, well you know how my brother came down to visit yesterday?" She asked.
"Uh huh, howd that go by the way?"
"Just listen."
"Okay..."
"Okay, well, he brang his supermodel looking girlfriend, and today, We took the kids to the movies, just me and Kenny. And he asked for 5 G, so I gave it to him...And today when we got back from the movies, we walked in the house and when I was on my way to put the baby to bed, I walked past the guest bedroom door and saw Marshall fucking that bitch."
"Uh, oh."
"Yeah, so, I kicked the bitches ass, and talked to Marshall, and I told him to leave, and like, he did, but now...like 15 minutes ago, I heard Kenny talking to that bitch, and as it turns out, Kenny wanted her to fuck Marshall, he wanted her to break us up. And it worked, and he paid her with the money that I gave him." She was crying now.
"Aw shit, listen, dont cry." He sighed. "Look, I dont know everything because I wasnt there, but, just how bad did you kick that bitches ass?"
"Proof!" She exclaimed, trying not to laugh.
"What?!" He asked defensively. "Its an important detail of the story."
"Im sure it is." She rolled her eyes.
"Well, seriously though, just how bad did you get her?"
"Ohhh, I got her good. She wont fuck with me again if she knows whats good for her. I tried beating the shit out of Marshall, but I didnt do very well with that..." She trailed off.
"Well listen," He said, she heard a high pitched beeping sound and she cringed and pulled the phone away from her ear quickly. "Ah shit, sorry, I pressed a button by accident."
"Its okay."
"Okay, so, he left? You dont know where he is?" He asked.
"Nope." She wiped her tears off on her shirt.
"Well, have you tried seeing if he was at Kims? He could have dropped Hailie off and then stayed a few minutes."
"I called there, she said he had already left."
"Shit. So wheres he staying now?"
"A hotel. Four seasons." She sniffled and took a deep breath, it felt better talking to someone who wasnt part of everything that went on today. "He said he was staying there under a different name, but I would let him tell me what it was, I sent him away."
"Uhm, shit, if he calls me, Ill tell him that your looking for him. Ill tell the guys to do the same. Why dont you call Paul? He talks to Paul like, everyday."
"Okay, Paul HATES me." She said.
"Paul hates everybody." He replied. "Oh shit. I dont know. He probably wont stay away for very long, you have Marsh right?"
"Yeah..."
"So, he probably wont stay away for long, hes gonna miss his son, you know?"
"Yeah, but, like, I want him now." She whined. "I cant fucking do this shit. You know why he fucked her?" She asked.
"Uh, because he was horny?"
"No, because hes STUPID! Hes a stupid, selfish, motherfucking dick head." She yelled exasperatedly. "But I love him." Her tone softened.
"Aww. Thats some sappy shit you got there. I called earlier, he wasnt there. I gave Hailie a message to tell him to call me."
"That was probably right when all this shit was going on. Right when the fight went down." She said quietly. "Look, if I hear from him before you do, which I dont think will happen, Ill have him call you. Thanks for talking to me Proof."
"No problem. Dont do anything stupid." He warned.
"Yeah, yeah I know. I wont."
"Good." He laughed. "The best thing you can do right now is relax. Try not to think about it too much, kuz itll only make you pissed. You aint need that shit right now. So just relax, dont think about it." He advised her. "Wait, you called his cell phone? Or try his pager?"
"He lost his pager in California, and his cell phone is off."
"Damn, that kid loses every fucking thing. Did you leave a voicemail?"
"Uh uh."
"Well, what if he checks his voicemail, and you didnt leave any message, so he wont call or come home. Call back, leave him a voicemail, and tell him that its important and that you need to talk to him right away. He'll call." He assured her.
"Aight, I will. Thanks Proof." She smiled slightly, feeling a little bit better about everything that had gone on that day, but still she just wanted to curl up next to Marshall and cry. She had too much betrayal for one day.
"No problem. If you need something, call and let me know. Aight?" He asked.
"Yeah." She sighed. "I will."
"Aight, then Ill talk to you a little later, aight?"
"Okay."
"Hope things work out for you."
"Me too." She said quietly. "Talk to you later Proof."
"Bye Renae." He said, hanging up the phone and shaking his head.
"Okay, Hailie, brush your teeth and get ready for bed, alright?" Kim asked, later that night.
"Ah, I dont want to." Hailie said. Marshall was next to her, looking absolutely miserable, with his arm around her. She was snuggled into his side, and into the back of the couch, and her arm was around his waist. "Cant I stay up until Dad leaves?"
"Ah, I think Im gonna go now Hai." He said, getting up. She sighed. "I have to check into the hotel still, its almost 11, and its way past your bedtime."
"Fine." She mumbled, standing up and stomping off upstairs.
"Your staying in a hotel?" Kim questioned. "Shes making you stay in a hotel?"
"Well shes not making me do anything Kim. I make my own decisions. Im a big boy now incase you hadnt noticed."
"Oh, I did." She smiled at him and he raised an eyebrow.
"What kind of shit you trying to pull Kim?"
"Nothing. Here, sit down, you arent leaving yet." She said, pushing him back down on the couch. He tried to get up again and she pushed him back down.
"Kim, what the fuck?"
"You havent talked to me about you and Renae. I know you hurting, so why dont you tell me whats going on? I can listen, girls are great at listening. C'mon." She coaxed.
"Ugh, fine, then can I leave?" He asked. He didnt really want to stay at all. He hated talking to Kim.
"Sure, if you want to." She shrugged. "Here, have some bacardi, and Ill go put Hailie to bed and tuck her in. And then I can come down and we can really talk, okay?" She asked. He shrugged. "Aight, you know where the bacardi is right?"
"Yeah." He mumbled, getting up and walking over to the liquor cabinet in the kitchen. She grinned and hurried upstairs to put Hailie to bed.
By the time she got back from tucking Hailie in, she walked down the stairs and saw Marshall, sitting on the couch comfortably. She grinned and walked down the steps, so close to what she wanted, and she knew how to get it. She walked over to him, and sat down next to him on the couch.
"Okay, so tell me what happened." She said, leaning closer to him. He shrugged and took another drink from the bacardi bottle.
"Well, we talked, you know?" He looked at her. She nodded, prompting him to go on. "She had been mad, was scrappin' with Laura, thats the sluts name that I fucked, and so, we got them off each other, and Renae started attacking me. So, finally we started talking, and like, she said that she didnt think that I loved her, or else I wouldnt have done that."
"Ugh, what a bitch." Kim shook her head. "Go on..."
"Well then, like she said that she didnt know if we could work this out, and like, she wouldnt let me go near her. Then she said that she couldnt trust me."
"I cant believe she said that. Damn, thats horrible."
"Yeah, and then, she said she wanted me to leave." He finished.
"Ohh, you poor thing."
"I just, I dont know why I fucked Laura. I must have been out of my mind. I love Renae, you know? And I ruined it. I fucked the whole thing up, and now theres nothing left." He wiped his eyes, refusing to let himself cry in front of Kim. He didnt want to show any emotion in front of her, not right now.
"You know, I think your better off without her." She stated. She caught the look of hurt in his eye and touched his shoulder lightly. "You know, if you want to cry, its okay. I here for you, aight?"
"Yeah." He blinked back tears and drank as much bacardi as he could. "Its just, I loved her." He said, looking at Kim. "I really did. And like, I dont know...Its just," He was crying slightly by this time. "Everyones leaving me."
"Aww, hunny, I'll never leave you, okay? I'ma always be here if you need me. I love you." She said, leaning in and hugging him. He hugged her back and drank some more bacardi at the same time.
"Thanks Kim." He mumbled.
"No problem at all." She smiled and leaned away from him slowly. "I've always been there for you, and I always will. Remember that. Renae obviously doesnt care about you like I do." She said softly. He had tears on the side of his cheeks and she reached up and brushed them away carefully. They stared at each other for a second, and then Kim took this oppurtunity to lean in for a kiss.
Marshall closed his eyes at first, and almost as soon as his lips touched hers, he pulled back suddenly and is eyes shot open. He stared at her, wide eyed. She bit her bottom lip and sighed.
"I cant do this." He said, trying to stand up. She grabbed his arm before he could get away from her, and pulled him back down on the couch.
"Its okay. I know, its so soon. C'mon, stay, talk to me. We can just talk." She pleaded. He nodded and relaxed back into the couch. He drank the rest of the bacardi, as if it was water, and felt himself get the familiar feeling of intoxication taking over his brain.
Suddenly he felt more open about his emotions, and told Kim everything, he even cried for a while He told her how mad he was that he fucked Laura, and how mad he was at himself, and at Renae for not listening to him. Kim agreed and told him that she didnt think that Renae was right for him. He shrugged and said that if Renae wasnt right for him, then he didnt know who was. Kim said that she was right for him, and he nodded.
He told her how he thought that things were over between him and Renae, and Kim told him that if she really loved him, she would give him another chance, like Kim had done to him, so many times before. He agreed and went on to tell her the stress from everything that was going on, not just at home, but with work, traveling, the new baby, everything. He completely opened up to her about everything. They talked for a few hours, Kim fed him alcohol, until he could barely think straight.
She was standing behind him, rubbing his shoulders and neck as he mumbled things that she couldnt make out. She wasnt even listening to him anymore, she was thinking about how to get him back.
He sighed and leaned forward, rubbing his eyes. He couldnt see straight, between the tears and the alcohol, and he barely knew what he was saying or where he was, the events of today blurred through his mind, it just didnt seem real.
"You know Marshall, I miss this." She said softly, sitting down next to him. "I miss, what we had, talking, laughing, everything."
"So do I." He muttered, slurring his words together.
"Yeah, do you ever think about me? How much fun we had together," She trailed off as he shrugged, and picked up his hands, bringing them up to touch her chest. He stared at her for a second, not sure of what was happening, all his senses were delayed.
"Uh," He hesitated. He thought things were over between him and Renae, she was mad at him and he wasnt too happy with her for saying the things that she did, and not listening to him. He didnt want to be alone, and Kim was so caring and understanding, she was there for him like she said he was. She was willing, and he didnt see any problem with it, as long as things were over with him and Renae. He shrugged, and she leaned in, kissing him.
He decided after a second that he would kiss back. She was so perfect, and she was there, and he just, wanted this to happen. For those moments, everything was forgotten, all the past incidents that they had gone through, and it was just that moment, and what they were going through then.
Kim pulled away after a second, and looked him in the eye. "You want to go back to the hotel now? Because, its okay if you dont. You can stay here, with me." She said, in a soft voice that sent shivers up his spine. "Do you want to stay here?"
"Yeah." He nodded. "I do."
"Great!" Kim grinned and leaned back, catching his mouth with hers and standing up, pulling him to his feet and wrapping her arms around him to help him stand up straight. He seemed to sink down, too drunk to stand up, and she pulled him towards the stairs, helping him walk.
