Chapter 1
"Laura, please come?" Kenny asked, following Laura as she cleaned up glasses from the bar. Laura shook her head and picked up a few more wine glasses and dishes to bring back and put in the sink. "Laura, I told my sister you were coming!" He pleaded.
"But, you didnt even ask me about going, you think I have time to go on vacation and pretend that Im your girlfriend so that you dont look like the TOTAL loser that you are in front of your sister and brother-in-law?" She said, brushing past him to head down the hallway that led to the kitchen.
"Look, I dont think you understand." Kenny shook his head and followed her. "Do you know who my sister and brother-in-law ARE?"
"I dont know, and I dont want to know. Just leave me alone. You know I cant stand you, why are you asking me anyways? Dont you have someone else?" She asked, turning around and glaring at him.
"Your the only one with a car, that I know well enough to ask-" She interrupted him by sighing and dumping the dishes into the sink.
"Look-" She started, turning around to face him, and putting her hands up in front of her, as if creating some sort of wall that he couldnt get past.
"No, wait. I know you will want to go when you find out the real reason why your going." He grinned and she raised an eyebrow.
"What Kenny?" She asked bitterly. "What the fuck is the real reason that you want me to go?"
"You are going to help me break up my little sisters marriage." He said slyly, putting his hand on her shoulder.
"Thats supposed to make me want to go?" She said blankly, looking at Kenny with pure disgust. "You really are an asshole. You fucking idiot-" She launched into a stream of insults, directed at him. He rolled his eyes as she shrugged his hand off her shoulder.
"Wait. You are going to seduce my brother-in-law, and my little sister will find out, and everything will be perfect." He smirked.
"Why the fuck would I want to help you ruin someone elses life? You cant settle for ruining your own, you fucking bastard."
"Do you know who you get to seduce? That is, if this whole thing works." He added, as she took off back to the front of the restuarant. "EMINEM!" She turned around and looked at him. For a second he thought she was going to cry, but then she burst into a fit of laughter. He looked around uncomfortably, people were starting to stare.
"You poor, desperate, loser." She stopped laughing and shook her head. "You actually think that you can use stupid lies like that to get me to go with you? Yeah, RIGHT! I dont think I could feel sorrier for you then I do right now."
"No, wait." He blinked, realizing that she didnt believe him. "Okay, You know how he married Renae?"
"Yeah..." She said slowly.
"My sister." He said. She tried really hard not to laugh and he rolled his eyes. "Okay, whats my last name?"
"Patton..." She replied.
"And what was her last name, before they got married?"
"Patton..." She said again.
"See? What did I tell you?"
"So, its a weird coincidence." She shrugged. "So what? Why didnt you mention she was your sister before?"
"Because, I just didnt. We dont really get along, and stuff like that." He explained.
"Yeah, right. I dont believe you for a second. Your just trying to get me to come with you so that you can hang around me and pretend we are going out. You need help. Get it now, and leave me the FUCK alone. Kay?" She walked away and he grabbed her arm.
"I can prove shes my sister." He said, almost desperatly. "Ill prove it."
"How?" She replied distractedly, pulling her arm out of his grasp.
"I dont know, but I can, and I will."
"Leave me alone, Kenny." She sighed and picked up more dishes.
"Please? Just come with me and you will see. And if shes not who I say she is, Ill never speak to you again. Ever. In my whole life." He pleaded. She hesitated.
"Why should I trust you Kenny?" She asked. "Why the fuck should I trust you? I trusted you when we went out, and look where it got me."
"Aight, listen. I was wrong to cheat on you. Okay? Im fucking sorry. Im not asking to go back out with you again, Im simply asking if you will pretend that we are still going out for a weekend so that you can work your magic on Eminem and get him and my sister to break up."
"You know, if what your saying is true, thats really shitty. I seen them on Tv together, award shows, red carpets, movie releases, those parties that they broadcast on MTV. They are SO cute together. Why would I ever want to do that to them?"
"Because..." Kenny racked his brain for a reason why she would want to help him. He grinned evilly as he had a plan. "I can get you money. You dont have to work at this shit restaurant anymore."
"You have no money, asshole."
"I can get money." He said quickly, forming a plan in his mind. "Ill borrow a few thousand from my sister, and you can have it, okay?"
"Thousand?" She said suddenly. "That would, pay my rent for a few months..." She trailed off.
"Uh, huh. And you wouldnt have to sleep with those guys after work for money either." He persisted.
"As much as Im gonna hate helping you, and being the person to come between two love struck rappers, I need the money." She rolled her eyes and breathed a heavy sigh. "So, when do we leave?" She asked reluctantly.
Kenny grinned. "Saturday."
"Thats, tommorow...You couldnt have told me sooner? Like I have nothing better to do!" She exclaimed, exasperatedly.
"Do you?" Kenny asked.
"No." She replied quietly, picking up a washcloth that she used to wipe tables down with.
"Good. Pick me up tomorow morning at 7 AM. Got it? We leave early, its a 6 hour drive." He ordered.
"6 hours?!" She exclaimed.
"Yeah...6 hours." He smirked.
"Alright then." She shrugged and left him so that she could clean tables.
She hated herself for going along with Kennys plan. She really did think that they made a cute couple, but she needed the money, badly. What she hated even more, was that she was helping Kenny. Kenny was the biggest asshole in the world, in her eyes.
They had dated about 2 years before, and it hadnt lasted long, because she came home from work to find him and another girl together. She had left, seeing them, and had wanted nothing to do with Kenny ever again. She had actually loved him, and he had done that to her. Looking back on it, Laura couldnt figure out why she loved him. He was a loser, he was horrible with children, he was really mean, he did just about every drug imaginable, he was an alcoholic and he wouldnt try and get help, or even admit that he had a problem, he had no money, and he thought he was gods gift to women. She hated him now, and had never hated him more, but she did need the money, and it was an easy job, they had agreed on a few days, and then her life could go back to normal again, and she could forget everything.
Marshall walked into the kitchen, jingling his keys around, just to hear the noise. He was wearing size 10 workboots, and baggy black jeans with a belt. He had a longsleeve shirt on, with the D12 logo on the front, and the Shady Records logo on the back. He had a black and white bandana on under a black nike hat. He spotted Renae, wiping down the counter carelessly, staring straight down at the white tile countertop, rubbing the dish rag in circles in the same spot, obviously distracted by something.
He leaned his elbows on the countertop of the island in the kitchen, and looked across it at Renae. "I'ma go get Hailie and then I thought maybe McDonalds for lunch or something." Renae tossed the rag down, that she had been wiping the counter down with, and looked up at him. "You want anything to eat while I'm out?" He asked.
"Just get me a french frie." She said quietly. "And some chicken mcnuggets." She added. "I'm not really all that hungry." She shrugged. Her eyes were duller then normal, and her voice sounded different somehow.
"Okay." He paused, staring at her for a second. "Your brother coming today, right?"
Immediatly her eyes narrowed into a glare and Marshall raised both eyebrows. "Yes." She said, through gritted teeth.
"Alrighty, you ok?"
"I'm fine." She lied. "Why?"
"You just seem kind of..." He trailed off, not knowing the words to use. He stood up straight, before repositioning his hands on the countertop. "I dont know."
"I'm fine. Is Hailie spending the night?" She changed the subject quckly.
"Yeah, shes staying until Monday night, I believe."
"Aight, cool." Renae nodded and looked down, avoiding eye contact with Marshall.
Marshall looked her over, from the grey old navy, slip-on sandals, to her legs, covered by baggy jeans that were made for boys. She had a dark blue and orange Broncos jersey on, with the number 30 and 'Davis' in orange letters on the back. Her hair was pulled up into a pony tail, her bangs were hanging around her face in 2 strands. Her bangs were the same length as her hair, and they came down to around her shoulders. She brushed one of the strands behind her ear, and shifted uncomfortably, watching him as he watched her. "You look different." Marshall said matter of factly.
"No, I dont. I look the same." Renae said slowly.
"Oh, aight then." Marshall decided to forget it, and he stood up straight again, keeping an eye on Renae the whole time. "You tired?"
"Yeah, a little. Im just so stressed out." She sighed.
"Well, do you want me to bring Marsh with me, so you can get a nap?"
"Thanks." Renae smiled. "That would be...REALLY nice."
"Okay." Marshall turned around and headed for the stairs, to go up to the nursery and get the baby. Renae followed him.
They walked into the nursery, and were met with the familiar smell of baby powder. The nursery was beautiful, painted light blue, with dark blue on the frame of the windows and the door. The section of room where the door was, was small, just enough to walk in, and it had a few windows and steps going up to the section where the crib was. There was a white dresser up against the wall, opposite the crib. The crib was also white, and had a navy blue blanket draped over the side of it. The off-white carpet was soft beneath their feet. Beside the crib was a old fashioned wooden rocking chair, a couple of dark blue pillows on it, that matched the navy blue blankets in the crib. A wooden bookcase was under the window, and white and blue checkered curtains draped down on either side. The room seemed perfect, and neat, as if from a magazine.
They walked over to the crib and looked down at the sleeping baby. He had a little bit of fuzzy brown hair that was messy on the top of his head, his blue eyes were closed, and he looked alot like Marshall, except with brown hair and blue eyes. He was still sort of chubby, but it was only baby fat, all babies had that. He was lying on his stomach, his little hand was clutching the corner of the blanket. Small stuffed animals, teddy bears, and beanie babies were around him. A shelf was hanging over the crib, with other toys on it, cars, trucks and fire engines were arranged up there.
Renae smiled lovingly and touched the top of his head lightly, brushing the soft hair back gently. She loved little Marshall, with everything in her, everytime she saw him, she would fall in love all over again. It was the greatest feeling in the world to know that she made something that little, and that she was responsible for him, and that he needed her, and that he was her baby. That thought was totally mind boggling to her. She always felt this unbelievable swell in her heart, an overwhelming sense of love, when she thought about that. She reached down, and picked him up. He stirred, and made a sort of grunting noise as she pulled him up against her, and let his head rest on her shoulder, as she rubbed his back in tiny circles, soothing him back into sleep.
"Get his diaper bag?" Renae asked quietly. Marshall walked over to the closet and grabbed the bag from the shelf. He put it on top of the bureau, and opened it. Renae walked over, and stood next to him, still rubbing the babies back. "I dont think you need that much, right?" She whispered, taking a few diapers out of a drawer and handing them to Marshall, to put in the bag.
"Naw, prolly not. I'll only be gone 'bout an hour." He shrugged.
"Okay." She said, handing the baby over to him, and then looking through the dresser drawer for a change of clothes, incase he should need it. After they had the diaper bag packed with a few bottles and a couple of toys and diapers and clothes, Renae put the bag strap over Marshalls free shoulder, the baby was sleeping on the other one. She picked up the bouncy seat and handed it to him.
"Okay. Now you get some sleep." He said as they walked out the nursery door. Renae nodded and brushed the babies hair back again, kissing his forehead gently. "What time is Kenny getting here at?"
"Um..." Renae sighed, thinking. "He said that he would be here before 6 tonight. So, I dont know. Maybe 8 o clock." She shrugged.
"But, I thought you just said-" Marshall began.
"Yeah, I know, I said before 6. But hes ALWAYS late." She shook her head.
"He could be on time."
"Not likely. We'll see though."
"Aight. So, I'll be back in a bit." Marshall said, as they walked slowly down the stairs that led to the front hall. "Try and get some sleep, and relax."
"Kay." Renae said softly, stopping about halfway down the stairs and watching Marshall go down the rest. "You got your cell phone?"
"Uh-huh, and the pager. Call if you need me okay?"
"Okay." She nodded. Marshall got down to the front door and opened it with his free hand. "See ya." She called down to him.
"Bye, babe." He grinned at her and then left. She smiled to herself and turned around, going back upstairs to the bedroom to take a nap until he got back.
