Thomas Sutherland was born in 1296 in Helmsdale, Scotland. He grew up on a small farm, and was a fisherman with his father and two younger brothers. In January of 1314, he and his father joined William, Second Earl of Sutherland, who was on his way to meet up with King Robert Bruce to the south. He and his father both survived the Battle of Bannockburn, and while his father returned home, he joined a group of Augustinian monks and went to Selskar Abbey in Wexford, Ireland. After completing his training, the now Father Thomas left Ireland and returned home to Helmsdale to begin his own church. |
