'Kareena thrills S. Africans, but singers steal limelight'
Sun City (South Africa), July 26 (IANS)
Cinema India : Bollywood > Kareena thrills S. Africans, but singers steal limelight:
Actress Kareena Kapoor thrilled audiences here with deft dance steps and colourful costumes, but singers KUMAR SANU and Alka Yagnik stole the show.
Kareena was the only actress of note featuring in the first Bollywood show at this internationally renowned resort, which is a favourite with Bollywood filmmakers, the only other actor being Chunkey Panday, who seemed to be here more for a holiday than a serious show.
Kareena whizzed through dance items from her various films, attracting whistles and applause from the younger people in the audience, one even making off with a scarf she flung away during a dance.
But the loudest applause was reserved for KUMAR SANU and Yagnik, arguably the most prolific Hindi film playback singers of the past decade.
The duo belted out hit after hit to quench the insatiable thirst for more from the crowd, which was much smaller than expected but very appreciative.
After a lively and colourful dance medley by the eight-member Pappu and Malu Dance Troupe from India and an equally good instrumental medley by the seven-man orchestra from Mumbai, Poonam Bhatia screeched her way very badly through the first song before improving tremendously in her second and only other item in the show.
KUMAR SANU wasted no time in taking to the stage immediately, accompanied by dancers carrying flaming torches. The singer oozed far more confidence and stage charisma than during his previous four visits to South Africa in the past decade as he performed solo for almost an hour, shortening his hit songs to get in as many as possible of the requests from his local fans.
The more staid and conservative Yagnik also went through a long set of her hit songs before she and KUMAR SANU really brought the house down with their duets.
Compere Sajid Khan proved to be a bit of a damp squid, using jokes and audience tactics used repeatedly in other live shows from India.
The same applied to Chunkey who did a silly and obviously poorly rehearsed comedy dialogue with Khan before some equally silly dances.
Promoter Hazel Feldman of Showtime International had promised fans a Bollywood show with standards matching those held in the US and Britain.
The Mumbai-based coordinator of the show, Abhijit Chowdhary, ensured that the promise was kept in terms of a colour, sound, dance, song and light spectacle.
The show filled only about a third of the 6,000-seater venue. Organisers attributed this to the inclement weather. The region is currently experiencing the severest winter in many years.
Feldman said she was not entirely disappointed with the turnout. "The show was an excellent one and has been an excellent learning curve for our plans with Bollywood shows," Feldman told IANS.
Feldman is the first white South African woman to have promoted a Bollywood show, an area dominated by local Indian males. She also plans to take artistes from here to India.

'Popular Indian celebrities roped in to sway voters in elections '

Time is GMT + 8 hours

By Channel NewsAsia's India Correspondent Atul Jolly

NEW DELHI : At first thought, Bollywood celebrities, television stars and cricket players may have little in common, but it is actually no surprise that all three groups have been roped in to play their part in the ongoing Indian general election.

Although they have little or no political knowledge, it is about marketing it right to catch the all-precious vote.

Bollywood celebrities, actors, both young and old - everyone is joining in the political campaign trail, looking to cash in on their star appeal.

And the election campaign this year has taken on a carnival-like atmosphere.

"The film stars have a lot of appeal, but only if they use their power in the right manner. If they commit to the right party and have the right motive, they can make a very strong impact," said explained veteran actor and campaigner Jeetendra.

Explaining her stance was former Miss India Celina Jaitley, also an actress and campaigner.

"After being crowned Miss India, this is the first opportunity to prove myself a proper citizen of the country. I'm behind the Congress Party, which I believe stands up for the young, who are our hopes for the future," she told reporters.

While some stars work to garner votes, others, like Govinda and Dharmendra, have actually joined political parties in the hope of getting elected.

It is common to see veteran actresses Hema Malini and Poonam Dhillon, TV star Smriti Irani, ex-Ms World Yukta Mukhi, actor and bodybuilder Dara Singh, playback singer Kumar Sanu, retired star Suresh Oberoi and cricketer Virendra Sehwag at work....READ FULL ARTICLE

'Bollywood sings BJP tunes'

New Delhi, April 11

BJP president Venkaiah Naidu and noted playback singer and BJP member Kumar Sanu releasing the audio CD and cassette of 'Mahashakti Bharat', the party's theme song for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, at Naidu's residence in New Delhi on Friday. PTI

NEW DELHI: After roping in film stars to further its electoral prospects, the ruling BJP on Friday again sought refuge in Bollywood by lifting music of popular Hindi songs to compose its own signature tune for its campaign for the coming general elections.

While the opening song of tele-serial `Mahabharat' has been dubbed to make the party's main theme song - `Mahashakti Bharat - shaktishali Bhajapa (BJP)', hugely popular numbers from Amir Khan starrer `Lagaan' and Hrithik Roshan's `Koi mil gaya' have been added partyline lyrics to compose two sets of CDs and cassettes.

The song Amitabh Bachchan rendered for film `Baghban' has been re-fitted with words to target Congress president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin.

BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday released three sets of CDs and cassettes - `Mahashakti Bharat shaktishali Bhajapa, `Kamal khil gaya' (comprising four songs) and `Bhajapa laher' (containing six songs), one lakh copies of which will be circulated all over the country.

"The lyrics of `Mahashakti Bharat - shaktishali Bhajapa' is extensively based on the salient points of the party's vision document which highlights the roadmap for making India into a developed superpower," Naidu told reporters here.

He said these songs have been specially composed in such a way that they not only appeal to the common man but also convey the party's vision and ideology in a simple and effective manner.

Noted play back singer Kumar Shanu changed lyrics of his popular song of `1942: a love story' to render `Atalji ko dekha to aisa laga.'

The songs, which were recorded at a Mumbai studio, have been rendered by popular playback singers including Sudesh Bhosle, Vinod Rathore, Rahul Seth, Munna Aziz, Anuradha Podwal, Sadhana Sargam and Sanjeevani, Naidu said.

The music score has been arranged by Pranay Pradhan while the production was coordinated by well known producer Devendra Khandelwal.

Inputs for the lyrics of the songs were provided by Naidu and BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Naidu said the party will distribute the CDs and cassettes to shopkeepers in rural areas for the propaganda of its policies and programmes.

"There is a wave for BJP and we want to further capitalise on it," he said.

'KUMAR SANU - ARTIST OF THE DECADE'

Bollywood play back singer KUMAR SANU was given the Artist of the Decade award at the Bollywood Music Award 2003 in Atlantic City on Saturday.

One of the most prolific singers ever to work in the Indian film industry, Kumar Sanu's recorded output numbers in the thousands of songs, reaching by his estimation over 8,000 by the turn of the millennium.

Sanu broke the Guinness world record for the largest number of songs recorded in a single day, with 28 -- a testament not only to his polished technique, but to his unparalleled ability to quickly and effortlessly master unfamiliar material in the studio.

He made his living in the early '80s partly by recording a series of Kishore Kumar covers for a pop label, but remained unable to make inroads into film.

Finally, in 1987, music director Jagjit Singh -- noted for his mastery of the romantic ghazal song form -- offered Sanu the chance to sing in the Hindi film Andhiyan .

Sanu sang all but one of the songs featured on the soundtrack album, which made him a star; he won the first of his record five consecutive Filmfare awards as Best Male Playback Singer, and began recording new material at a furious pace.

He won Filmfares for his performances in Saajan, Deewana, Baazigar , and 1942: A Love Story (in order, up through 1994), but his work extended much farther, so much so that by the end of the decade he had recorded -- in many different languages -- for literally hundreds of films.

'Musafir's unique journey'
For the music of his film Musafir, director Sanjay Gupta is trying out a concept thats new to Hindi films. He plans to release a double album box set - with one album being Musafir Lounge and the other Musafir Club.

Most songs have been composed by the Vishal-Shekhar duo, but whats interesting is that some songs will have alternate versions by Nikhil Chinapa. Explains Gupta: These arent remixes as we know them. But Nikhil has entirely reproduced songs that Vishal-Shekhar have composed. The sound design on these songs is completely different. In fact, I am also getting Aqeel to reproduce one track.

In the West, the concept of having slow and fast albums within one set isnt new - the famous example being the Buddha Bar sets compiled by Claude Challe and Ravin.

And though Gupta says the idea stemmed from there, he basically wanted to try something new that would be targeted at the youth and yet do well commercially. This box should be like a collectors edition, with a booklet about the music, he says.

Will all the songs be part of the film? Gupta replies: Not all. In this kind of film, the stars dont get to lip-sync songs. Instead, the songs will be integrated into the script in the background.

The singers include Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Richa Sharma, Shaan, Kunal Ganjawala, KUMAR SANU and Abhijeet. Lyrics are by Dev Kohli and Vishal. And though Gupta hasnt finalised the music company, he plans to release the album in July.

Both Vishal-Shekhar and Chinapa are thrilled with the project. Says Vishal: Such a thing has never happened here, and as music directors, we thought this was challenging. The whole sound has a modern clubby feel. ...READ FULL ARTICLE

'MASHOOQA'
Posted online: Friday, October 01, 2004 at 0000 hours IST

ne of Venus Records and Tapes most prestigious albums, Mashooqa has been released recently. The album has eight romantic tracks composed by Bappi Lahiri and written by Sameer. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, two of our topmost singers, have sung the tracks, while the video features Jugal Hansraj and USA-based Gayatri Patel.

BAPPI LAHIRI
Veteran composer Bappi Lahiri has been known to be a trendsetter. The man behind hit scores like Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Himmatwala, Sharaabi, Aaj Ka Arjun, Ghayal, Aankhen and Dalaal who is known more for his rhythmic numbers now returns to vintage melody in this romantic album.

ALKA YAGNIK
The Numero Uno playback singer now for over a decade, Alka Yagnik has always been very selective in choosing her albums. This is her first album with Venus.

KUMAR SANU
One of the most popular and prolific singers in the last 15 years, Kumar Sanu now sings the kind of songs that are his special forte - soft romantic melodies.

SAMEER
Todays busiest song-spinner has had a consistent track-record of hits both in films and albums for the last fifteen years. Mashooqa is his latest album.

'MASHOOQA'
Back again Bappi Lahiri
Gayatri Patel and Jugal Hansraj Where did our colourful, bejewelled Bengali babu, Bappi Lahiri, disappear and who was he trilling for? Well, it seems he was busy making sweet music for the music album Mashooqa, featuring Jugal Hansraj (another guy who's long been out of the scene) and US girl Gayatri Patel. And that's not all. This album also brings together two of our BEST known singers, Alka Yagnik and KUMAR SANU for the first time.> That's quite a musical coup, eh?
