v Murder weapons
Thanks Teresa for forwarding mail which raises THE salient point about weapons that must be examined anew and solved. Be it Columbine tragedy or later, I oppose holding NRA responsible now not only on ethical grounds but also pointlessness - how in the world can one distinguish between proper use and evil use of the instrument, and prevent an ethical criminal/revolutionary/skeptic from claiming one purpose while using it for another?
Consider drugs. A doctor can prescribe a drug. Did you know they could prescribe it for any thing? How about medical marijuana?
Consider pornography. Let a judge define it some how. I assure you that I can use that definition to have bible, medical gene books etc declared pornographic. If there are exceptions granted to the definition, then it gives me many options - screw the restrictions on grounds of being discriminatory, couch my stuff in language appropriate for medicine, go underground, …
Consider definitions of relief/euthanasia and abortion/choice too. Grant women a right for abortion in certain cases, and pretty soon every abortion can be justified! Forbid the choice in certain cases, and pretty soon all choice is gone. It depends on skill levels of the local Sir lawyers, and the breakfast cereal Sir judge ate on the verdict morning - murder being a minor subject. I can and will publicize on the Internet repeated attempts on my life by a VAMPIRE court of Nashua.
Now consider National Club Association in Abel/Cain time. Ideally one would like to use my philosophy (I am THE Dr. cantfake) on this issue: distinguish between murderous clubs and other clubs, forbid one but not the other, and prevent-all-the-time most-Sir-Lawyers from sidestepping using loopholes. Could not be done so far! Tech wasn’t there! Now it is, hyper smart ones (like me) recognize it, and are presenting for consideration by citizens my solution. But before you proceed to it, pause a second, reflect some time, and see why EVERY solution you can come up with will have exploitable loopholes. By definition, a good lawyer is one who can drive a truck through your loophole, if not sail Queen Elizabeth II through!

Idea is simple and generalizations apply to stupidly-maiming-mines drug-lord-encryption etc. Use the new technology to split the set of applicable into two groups of many sets each - authorized and unauthorized, modify the instruments appropriately, and fail safely, guarding against loopholers, ruthlessly eliminate those who defy orders to make the distinction, be ready for ruthless self-destruction if the distinction order is abused to advantage the distinguisher order side, and eliminate cheating fears by composing technologies of known enemies.
Let us apply it to some debates to see what I am saying.
The new technology to split the set of applicable into two groups of many sets each - authorized and unauthorized: In the case of guns the sets are many: Police, citizens at home, citizens licensed to carry weapons, hunters, etc.
Modify the instruments appropriately: Every shooter, old or new, must have a trigger lock. The lock is active and fail-safe. Active means it will fire on all unless they emit right radiation.
And fail safely: Fail-safe means that if the distinguishing mechanism fails, the shooter wont fire at all. By definition, henceforth, things with the locks would be called guns, while those without will be called murder-weapons.
Guarding against loopholers: A loopholer is a cantfake
word to describe some one who drives a legitimate truck through legitimate loopholes,
never mind the intentions for creating the loophole. In other words a clever
legal adversary, often with more money not brains. Mostly inapplicable in this
case
Ruthlessly eliminate those who defy orders to make the distinction: One can start by jail time and large fines for non-compliance. If you have a murder-weapon used offensively, you are equally responsible for the crime.
Be ready for ruthless self-destruction if the distinction order is abused to advantage the distinguisher order side: mostly inapplicable in this case
Eliminate cheating fears by composing technologies of known enemies: composed passwords technology to prevent abusive mis-sale of protection passwords.

Let us apply it to mines. You have the triscrew of really needing them when war is on. Destroying them after the war, and ridiculesness of reliable location maps. In reality they end up needlessly maiming the poor often young in Africa.
