Student Named One of 20 Scholars

IIT master's degree
candidate, Hitesh Kumar, is one of 20 winners of the IBM Linux
Scholar Challenge. The annual competition judges student
entries on their creativity, thoroughness and results. Winners
were selected by an IBM panel of technologists from IBM
Research, the Linux Technology Center and other knowlegeable
Linux personnel.
For his entry, Hitesh
developed a new message passing scheme called "Mailslots,"
which provides the user with a means of inter process
communication that can send and receive discrete messages. His
prize is a new IBM Linux ThinkPad. Hitesh is a student of CS
Research Professor Tzilla Elrad. Congratulations!

the Lewis Department of Humanities Writing Center is
also gearing up for the return of students. The Writing
Center reopens today. Students are encouraged to sign up
for appointments. Sign up sheets are posted on the doors
of rooms 232 and 233 in Siegel Hall.

NEW IIT SEMINAR
SERIES FOCUSES ON WASTEWATER REUSE IN ILLINOIS Environmental
engineering program opens Wednesday at Rice
Campus
A series of
eight seminars examining the barriers and incentives to wastewater
reuse in Illinois will be offered at the Rice Campus in Wheaton
(Room 148) on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Presentations can also be seen over the IITV network from room 225
in the Stuart Building on the Main Campus. The entire series is free
and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served.
To receive one-semester credit for this
seminar, you should enroll in ENVE 590-071. Students should attend
all seminars and write a short, critical paper about the series of
presentations. More details about the assignment will be presented

BIOTERRORISM AND FOOD SAFETY PUBLIC MEETING THIS
WEEK |

IIT’s National Center for Food Safety and
Technology (NCFST) along with the Illinois Center (ICFST) are
co-sponsoring a satellite televised viewing of the Food and Drug
Administration’s Public Meeting on the Bioterrorism Act, Wednesday,
January 29, 2003 from Noon- 2 p.m. Chicago time.
The meeting will discuss proposed regulations
implementing two sections in Title III of the Public Health Security
and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, regarding
Registration of Food Facilities and Prior Notice of Imported Food

Ali Emadi, an assistant
professor in the electrical and computer engineering
department, has been appointed as the Associate Editor of the
IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics for "Power Electronics
in Drives" for 2002-2004. Dr. Emadi joined IIT’s ECE
Department in September 2000 as an assistant professor. His
areas of specialty include power electronics, motor drives,
electric machines and power systems.

| "THOUGHT LEADERS" SEMINARS RETURN IN
2003 | |

Next
month, IIT's successful "Thought Leaders Seminars" return to the
main campus, featuring prominent civic leaders and entrepreneurs
sharing their experiences with the IIT community.
Karl Klessig, an IIT alumnus (PHYS '63) and
former CEO of Xdrive Technologies, Inc. will be the featured speaker
next month. Prior to his leadership at Xdrive, Klessig was at
Critical Path, the leading business-to-business messaging solution
provider, where he served as the Vice President of Business
Development. Klessig was also Advisor to the President and Vice
President of Marketing and Strategic Alliances for ISOCOR, where he
participated in growing revenue, achieving profitability and, as a
result, selling ISOCOR to Critical Path at a significant multiple of
investor value.
Klessig's lecture takes place Thursday,
February 13 from 4-5 p.m. in Perlstein Hall Auditorium. The "Thought
Leaders" series is sponsored by IIT's Ed Kaplan Entrepreneurial
Studies program and the IIT Leadership Academy.

Joins Ethics Center
|
Jadran Lee has joined the staff of
the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions as
Research Associate. He comes to IIT from the University of
Chicago where he is completing his Phd. in philosophy. While a
graduate student, Jadran spent a year as a Fellow in the
Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the
University of Melbourne in
Australia.

National Public Radio's Living on Earth program
featured a story January 25 on Professor George Nassos'
environmental management program at the Stuart School
of Business.
On January 24, IIT Institute of Design Assistant
Professor Chris Conley was quoted in the New Haven
Conneticut Register regarding the ways people can
customize the look of their cell phones.
James Opon, Director of IIT's career
development center was quoted in a story in the January 23
Fredericksburg, Virginia Free Lance-Star about the job
market for technology graduates.
On January 21, NCFST Director Dr. Charles Sizer
was quoted on Agriculture.com news regarding
the latest food safety technologies and a seminar Sizer
presented at the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual
convention.
Chicago-Kent College of Law Dean Hal Krent
was quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story January
20, regarding the legalities of on-line casino gambling.
IIT Provost Allan Myerson and Professors Joel Goldhar
and Carlo Segre were all quoted in a syndicated story
January 19 in the Contra Costa, California Times about
the economic downturn in technology-related fields.
On January 19, Dr. Charles Sizer, Director of the
National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST)
was interviewed on Des Moines, Iowa radio station
WHO-AM, about new technologies which make food from the
farm safer. Other topics included high pressure processing and
irradiation of ground beef.
The Chicago Reader, in a January 17 cover story,
singled out IIT's new Rem Koolhaas-designed McCormick
Tribune Campus Center and Helmut Jahn's Student Residence
Hall complex as "examples of new architecture of
consequence in Chicago." |

It’s that time of year again! Time to
submit nominations for the 2003 Julia Beveridge Awards. The
award is named for an extraordinary woman who served as the
Librarian of Armour Mission and as the first Registrar of
Armour Institute. Beveridge was widely recognized for her
contributions to the Armour Mission and for her strong
leadership.
The annual presentation of this award
is intended to recognize the importance of such commitment to
our university and community and to evoke the memory of all
that Mrs. Beveridge exemplified as a teacher, administrator,
and human being.

IIT Trivia Challenge
Answer:
Henry Townley Heald
was IIT president from 1938-1952. He left to become president
of New York University and later, the Ford Foundation. Under
Heald's leadership, Lewis and Armour merged and Mies van der
Rohe drew up his campus master plan.
