ESF CLUB: TOP FILMS

Films are integral to a good "sit down". Films give us things to think about, issues to ponder and debates to research while taking the number two. The following are good, hardy flicks that summon attention to movie-watchers everywhere.

Requiem For A Dream by Darren Aronofsky

  • A dark, graphic and contrasting film about the negatives of addiction and obsession, with an interesting climatic ending; Incredible plot, cinematography and soundtrack.

Pi by Darren Aronofsky

  • A dark, fast-paced film about a paranoid numerologist who is searching for a mathematical pattern in nature that will define it as a non-dynamical system. Typical Aronofsky-style film with Massive Attack and Aphrodite featured in the soundtrack.

Braveheart by Mel Gibson

  • An epic film- the story in the life of Scottish rebel freedom fighter William Wallace and his campaign against the tyranny of Edward the Longshanks, a past king of England. Such a good movie that it keeps me regular.

Waking Life by Richard Linklater

  • An incredibly detailed discussion of life, human beings, society and dreaming- in particular, this movie detials the question, "What is a Lucid Dream" and "When we die, are we simply dreaming forever, stuck in a perpetual lucid dream?". An amazing flick for thoes who want to put alittle more thought into movie-watching.

Cidade de Deus (City of God) by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund

  • A tale of violence and revenge in Rio de Janerio's roughest slum- the City of God. True story of a young man whose dream to be a photojournalist, takes him through a path of gang-warfare and ultimately to the realisation that the path may be his only way out towards his dreams.

Evil Dead by Sam Raimi

  • A group of college students venture into a cabin, somewhere in the woods in Virginia. When they find the "Book of the Dead" and play the accompanying tape, they are forced into a night of terror, zombies and unstoppable evil. Any vivid horror buffs out there- i definately reccomend this- be ready for scenes rich in blood and gore. Evil Dead 2 and 3 are also out there for your viewing pleasure (or terror?)

A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick

  • The depiction of a young gang raping, killing and ravaging through a dystopic Britain and the "cure" received by the gang leader when he volunteers to be treated for his violent nature. A Kubrick masterpeice with a cool soundtrack. The film was banned from public exhibition when it was released, due to its content and caused significant attention in the public for its messages.

Characters in the movie speak a slang called NASDAT, created by the auther who wrote the original book (from which the movie was made after). Check out the NASDAT Language Glossary for translations of this slang language.
