The Lonely Man

I offered you some sunshine
on a cold and cloudy day
You gave me but a single look
and then you turned away
I offered you some starlight
in the dark and unlit night
but you said that starlight burns
you couldn't take the light
I offered you some springtime
for the winter's dreary cold
but you said the breath of spring
had only turned you old
I offered you the gift of love
to break your heart of stone
but you said that wouldn't do
and left me here alone
I finally offered friendship
to help you ease your fears
and even that you wouldn't take
so I offer you my tears.
The last thing I offer you
is sadness felt today
for the man whose happiness
he took and threw away
So take with you the knowledge
that I've given all I can
and I'll take the memory of
the solitary man.
