Fourtieth Birthday

I am old.
This realization cuts me like a knife
Forty times have I seen the seasons change
I've seen the dawn of four decades.
Where did the time go?
Yesterday I was a child..
with the future laying spread out at my feet.
and with the exuberance of youth..
I met the challenge.
but somehow the time passes
and it all seems to slip away.
And now .. its over.
There's nothing left for me to do but lie here in wait
for death to claim these tired old bones.
I'm forty today you know.
Where is that angel of death?
Surely he knows that today is the day...
the day its over for me?
Hey.. Who's that new girl on the bus?
I've never seen her before..
She's beautiful.
Why is she smiling at me?
Does she not know how near death I am?
She acts as though she knows me.
Perhaps she thinks I'm a friend of her grandfather's.
No.. she sees the portfolio at my feet
and wants to discuss art.
Want to come up and see my etchings little girl?
Stop it....
It's  time for you to die.
You're forty today after all..
She wants to have lunch with me.
hmm.. wonder if that angel will take a raincheck?
like maybe another forty years or so.
