Henry Kuhlmann
Henry was born on November 25, 1844 in Hanover County Germany.
His mother died when he was a small boy. His father remarried, so it is
assumed that he was raised by his father and step mother. On Sept. 24,
1871 he was married to Sophie (Maria) Catherine Margaretha Witter in Buecken. She was born on Sept. 24, 1851 at
Weitzen, Hanover Germany. Her parents were Johann Friedrich Diedrich Ehler Witter and Charlotte Dorethee Wilhelmine Hagedorn.
Encouraged by his step-brother Fred, The family decided to move to America.
A deciding factor was that every young man in Germany was required to serve
three years in the military. |

At that time Henry and Marie had 6 children
(5 boys and 1 girl). On February 21, 1888 the family, along with Henry's
father Christian (now a widower) sailed for America on the ship Tarfe.
They were on the water nine days. After going through immigration they
boarded a train for Humboldt, Nebr., arriving March 11, 1888. They lived
in Johnson County for one year and Nemaha County for 5 years where Henry
took up the occupation of farming. Two more children were born during this
time. They moved to Smith County Kansas in 1894 where their last child
was born. Henry died on April 26, 1898 at the age of 54 of an apparent
ruptured appendix. Marie returned to Nemaha County Nebr. in 1902 where
she lived with or near some of her children. She died at the age of 64
on April 15, 1916. Her spirituality is best expressed by these words which
she wrote in her daily devotion book, "God gave me much sickness to bear
during my married life but He always was there to help me, and I hope and
pray he will be with me to my end. My hope is he will keep my children
on the straight and narrow way". Henry's Father Christian, Henry, Marie
and their daughter Sophie were laid to rest at St. John's Lutheran Church
one mile east and 3 miles south of Athol, Kansas.
