Dedrick Fredrick Kuhlmann (Uncle Dick) born Aug. 7, 1877 in Warpe Hanover, Germany. He came to America at the age of 10 with his parents, Grandfather, 4 brothers and a sister on the ship Tarfe. They landed in New York March 7, 1888. The family traveled to Nebraska by train, arriving at Humboldt at 4 p.m. March 11, They Hired 2 drivers with teams and wagons to haul their belongings , while most of the family walked the 15 miles to the Eggers farm North West of Humboldt yet that night. Dick's comments about a farmer that he worked for in Nebraska was whenever it was nice weather he had to work in the |
barn, and whenever it was raining, he had to fix fence. When he was ______ ( or year), Dick moved to Smith County Kansas where he took up farming. There he met Voletta Larson. Voletta was born in Savana, IL on Aug. 12, 1881. The lived on the banks of the Mississippi river and her father had employment on the other side and crossed the river daily on a raft. The Larson family also migrated to Smith County Kansas where Voletta's father took up farming. The family lived in a dugout south of Athol, KS. Dick and Voletta (Aunt Lettie) were married on March 1, 1901. They lived on several farms in the Kensington/Athol area, struggling to provide for their family. To help the financial burden, their children hired out as farm hands at a very early age. Dick died June 6, 1931, age 53 from a heart condition which plagued him most of his adult life. Voletta died Dec. 4, 1959, age 78. They had 10 children.
