Song of the Lioness

Alanna of Trebond

Alanna switched places with her twin brother Thom to become a knight. Since girls weren't allowed to become knights, she had to dress up as a boy until she got her shield. Alanna is famous for her temper but very determined. At first she didn't like having the Gift but she soon learned that there would be times that she would need to use her Gift. Alanna has a cat named Faithful who has some interesting abilities. Faithful was killed defending Alanna from a crazy Copper Isles princess. She is also a member of the Bazhir Bloody Hawk tribe and was taught hand-to-hand combat by the Shang Dragon Liam Ironarm. Together, she and Prince Jonathon defeated the Ysandir in the Black City, she killed Duke Roger who wanted the throne of Tortall and she found the Dominion Jewel and brought it back for Jon. Alanna married George after defeating Roger for the second time, although she also had a marriage proposal from Jon. She refused because she felt that Jon only wanted to marry her to prove that he didn't care what people thought about him.

George Cooper

George is the King of the Rogues. He met Alanna when she came to the palace as a page. He was the first person she told that she was a girl. George got her a horse named Moonlight. He also got Prince Jonathon a horse called Darkness as well. George has the Sight but it's not as strong as his daughter's. Also, Alanna's Gift shields her from his Sight since the Sight is an aspect of the Gift. He married Alanna after she defeated Roger in 'Lioness Rampant' and they have three children: Thom, and the twins Alan and Alianne. George is now Baron of Pirate's Swoop and the King's assistant spymaster.

The Immortals

Veralidaine Sarrasri

Daine was born in Galla and came to Corus with Onua after her mother was killed by bandits. She helped Onua with the Queen's Rider's horses. She has wild magic and the mage Numair taught her how to use it. She can shapeshift into animals and heal them. Her mother is now a minor goddess and her father is the hunt god Weiryn. That makes Daine a demi-goddess. She also adopted a dragonet named Skysong (nicknamed Kitten). Her wild magic came in very handy during the war with the Immortals. She also went to Carthak as part of the peace delegation and helped the Graveyard Hag kick Emperor Ozorne off his throne. She and Numair now have a shapeshifting daughter named Sarralyn.

Numair Salmalin

Numair's real name is Arram Draper. He was forced to change it when he escaped from Carthak to Tortall. His Gift helped him survive in Tortall. He can shapeshift into animals and he teaches Daine about her wild magic, even though he has no wild magic himself. He can also use words of power (he turned a tree into a man and a man into a tree) and create lifelike simulacrums of himself that can even fool Gifted people. He and Emperor Ozorne used to be best friends. Ozorne now considers Numair a traitor. Numair traveled with Daine through the Divine Realms and is now her lover.

Protector of the Small

Keladry of Mindelan

Kel spent most of her childhood in the Yamani Islands and she learned much of their ways. They taught her their style of fighting and how to use their weapons. She wanted to become a knight but she didn't have to disguise herself as Alanna had done, since women were now allowed to be knights. Lord Wyldon, however, put her through a probation period before he would accept her as a page. She became the second lady knight in Tortall and helped defend Tortall in the war with Scanra. She had command of a refugee camp and defeated the evil mage Blace, turning the tide of the war in Tortall's favour.

The Trickster Duology

Alianne of Pirate's Swoop

Aly is the daughter of Alanna and George Cooper. Up until she was captured by pirates, made a slave and given to the noble Balitang family, she wanted to be a spy but George and Alanna didn't want their daughter in so much danger. After learning of Aly's adventures in the Copper Isles, George began to warm to the idea. The Trickster god Kyprioth had a lot to do with that change of heart. He made a wager with Aly that he would send her back to Pirate's Swoop if she keeps her master's four children safe for the summer. Aly is much more sneaky than her mother and very cunning. She learned a lot about spying from her father. She has the Sight and it is much more powerful than George's. She can use it to see distant objects and tell if people are lying to her. She was freed by the Balitangs after she defended them from a prince seeking the Copper Isles throne. She becomes the new Copper Isles' queen's spymaster.
