Circle of Magic

Sandrilene fa Toren

Sandry is the great-niece of Duke Vedris of Emelan. Her family was killed by a plague. She was taken to Winding Circle when Niklaren Goldeye discovered that she had ambient weaving magic. Her biggest fear is the dark but her friends helped take care of that when they made her a crystal light with their magic. It was Sandry who spun the mages' magics together. Her teacher is Dedicate Lark. Sandry is very defensive of her friends and can't stand people picking on helpless animals. She saved the mages' dog Little Bear from tormentors.

Trisana Chandler

Tris is a daughter of a merchant family. They shuttled her around until Niko found her and took her to Winding Circle. She has weather magic, which can get out of her control, especially if she is angry. She can be very temperamental. Niko taught her how to see magic, which rubbed off on the other mages linked to her. She loves reading books and learning new things. Being near-sighted, she also wears glasses.
 

Daja Kisubo

Daja is a Trader. She was declared trangshi when her ship sank and she was the only survivor. Her family was killed in the shipwreck. After she was declared an outcast, Niko took her to Winding Circle. She didn't fit in with the other girls, who disliked Traders, and Sandry had to defend her. She was taken to join the others at Discipline Cottage and learned her smith magic from Frostpine. Later events led her to become a Trader again. She also has living metal growing on her left hand as a result of dragging a forest fire through her body and the brass of her staff melting over her hand.

Briar Moss

Briar was a street rat. His mother was knifed when he was about four and he grew up in a gang and learned how to be a thief. He was about to be sent to the docks when Niko intervened and took him to Winding Circle where he was taught by Dedicate Rosethorn about his plant magic. Briar wants to help the poor and uses his medicines to help the people he meets, whether they can pay for it or not.

Dedicate Rosethorn

Rosethorn is a plant mage and Briar's teacher. She lives at Discipline Cottage with Lark. She likes birds a lot more than she likes people. She is one of the great mages.

Dedicate Lark

Lark is Sandry's teacher and a thread mage. She used to be a performer and came into her power very late in life. Nonetheless, she is a great mage and is a lot kinder to the children than Rosethorn.

Niklaren Goldeye

Niko is Tris' teacher and a famous vision mage. He found the four children and brought them to Winding Circle. He also is a great mage. He's also very fussy and can't stand dirt. He studied at Lightsbridge University.

Dedicate Frostpine

Frostpine is Daja's teacher and the only smith mage (besides Daja) who can handle all types of metal. He gets seasick and hates the cold.

The Circle Opens

Pasco

Pasco is the son of Provost Guards in Emelan. His magic is in dancing. Sandry met him when she saw him dancing magic to draw fish into the fisher's nets. Since dancing involves patterns, his magic is powerful. He helped Sandry kill two murderers.

Evvy

Evvy is a street rat and runaway slave. Her mother sold her when she was young. Briar met her in Chammur and taught her how to use her stone magic. She is now his student. She has a couple of pet cats and travels with Rosethorn and Briar.

Niamara and Jorality Bancanor

Nia and Jory are twins and the daughters of Frostpine's friends. They live in Namorn. Nia has carpentry magic and Jory has cooking magic. Nia is much shyer than her twin and they both meditate in different ways (Jory with a staff and Nia the normal way). Daja was the one who discovered their magic when she saw Jory use magic in the kitchen.

Kethlun Warder

Keth is a glass/lightning mage. He was struck by lightning and as a result, became terrified of it. Tris had to teach him not to be afraid of it. He accidentally created a glass dragon with lightning in her veins. Tris now looks after the dragon and has named her Chime. Keth can create glass balls that show crimes happening. His glass balls helped catch a murderer.
