1 - Alanna: The First Adventure
Chapter 1: Twins
Alanna doesn't want to be a lady and Thom doesn't want to be a knight so they decide to switch places. Alanna will go to the palace to be a page and Thom will go to the convent and be a mage. They convince the healing woman Maude to go along with their plan. While Maude is calling on the gods in the fire, Alanna sees a vision of a black city. Alanna and Thom ride to the Great Road. They split up. Thom goes with Maude to the City of the Gods and Alanna goes with Coram (disguised as a boy) to Corus. Along the way she manages to convince Coram to go along with her plan. She disguises herself as a boy and shortens her name to Alan.
Chapter 2: The New Page
Alanna meets Duke Gareth of Naxon, the training-master. She also meets Ralon of Malven, a fellow page who takes an instant disliking to her. Prince Jonathon of Conte puts an end to their confrontation and makes friends with Alanna. Gary, Duke Gareth's son, sponsors Alanna and shows her around the palace. Alanna has her first day of classes and learns that she has no free time. She decides to go home, but Coram convinces her to change her mind. Alanna and Gary go into Corus and meet the Rogue George Cooper.
Chapter 3: Ralon
Ralon begins to torment Alanna. She is determined not to give in to him. Alanna gets in trouble for fighting with Ralon. She heads into the city and asks George to teach her hand-to-hand combat. He agrees and after a few weeks, Alanna is good enough to beat Ralon. Ralon leaves Court.
Chapter 4: Death in the Palace
People begin falling ill from the Sweating Sickness. The Queen gets sick and Alanna's friend Francis dies. Jonathon falls ill and Alanna calls on the power of the gods to save him. Myles suspects that 'Alan' is a girl but says nothing to anyone about it.
Chapter 5: The Second Year
Alanna has to bind her chest flat. Raoul teases Alanna for not going swimming and she loses her temper with him. They later make up. Duke Roger of Conte arrives at the palace from Carthak. Alanna immediately doesn't like him. Roger tests the pages for the Gift. Jon meets George and George sells Alanna and Jon two horses named Moonlight and Darkness. Alanna begins sword-fighting lessons. She is horrible at it so she decides to train with Coram's heavy sword.
Chapter 6: Womanhood
George learns that Alanna is a girl and Alanna meets his mother, a healing woman named Eleni. Eleni gives Alanna a charm to keep her from getting pregnant. Myles takes Alanna back to his fief. She finds her sword Lightning. Duke Roger says that it is filled with ancient magic. Alanna gets a letter from Thom sent through George. He warns her that Duke Roger is asking questions about him. Alanna begins to learn more spells. Alanna beats Geoffrey in her first free-style duel since the last disastrous time. Jonathon asks if Alanna can go with him to Persopolis and Duke Gareth allows it. Alanna suspects that Roger is using magic to get Jon to go into the Black City and get killed.
Chapter 7: The Black City
In Persopolis, Alanna meets Ali Mukhtab, one of the Bazhir. Jon asks for a history of the Bazhir and Ali says that he will look it up. Jon and Alanna sneak into the Black City and meet the Ysandir. They combine their magic and call on the power of the gods to defeat them. Jon learns that Alanna is a girl and asks her to be his squire.
2 - In the Hand of the Goddess
Chapter 1: The Lady in the Forest
While returning to Corus from the coastal hills, Alanna meets the Mother Goddess and her cat. The Goddess gives her the ember-stone. The cat comes with Alanna back to Corus. Alanna names the cat Faithful. Faithful tries to attack Duke Roger.
Chapter 2: Duke Roger of Conte
Alanna beats Dain of Tusaine in a duel. Duke Roger wants the throne of Tortall and sees Alanna as a threat.
Chapter 3: The Prince's Squire
Alanna goes to the Dancing Dove, George's usual hangout. He gives her a letter and a gift from Thom. The gift is a chain mail shirt and a belt. George shows a romantic interest in Alanna. Alanna meets Delia of Eldorne. Alanna is attacked by a boar in a blizzard. She suspects that sorcery is behind it. Alex almost kills Alanna during a practice duel.
Chapter 4: A Cry of War
Duke Gareth's horse throws him and Duke Roger takes Gareth's place as general. Stefan informs Alanna that he was probably set up. George talks about giving up being a thief. Alanna and Jon head to the Drell Valley, which is where they will be stationed.
Chapter 5: By the River Drell
Jon is in command of Fort Drell. Alanna meets Thor. With nothing to do, she helps Duke Baird in the infirmary. The fort is attacked and Thor is killed.
Chapter 6: Captured!
While recovering from her exhaustion, Alanna continues to help the healers and she also works as a sentry. Duke Roger warns Alanna that she is in danger if she opposes him. Faithful warns her that the duke is as treacherous as a snake. Alanna is captured by the enemy. Jon and Myles rescue her. Jon learns that Myles knows Alanna is a girl. A peace treaty between Tortall and Tusaine is signed.
Chapter 7: Winter Lessons
Alanna begins lessons with Eleni on how to be a girl. Jon and George see her dressed up as a girl for the first time. Alanna is attacked by the wolf Demon Grey and her ember-stone shows her that the wolf had Duke Roger's Gift in him. Alanna and Jon become lovers just after her seventeenth birthday.
Chapter 8: Fears
Delia and Roger are plotting together. A fever runs through the city and the Queen falls ill again but recovers. Alanna thinks the Queen's weakness is caused by sorcery. She reveals her suspicions to Myles. Alanna almost drowns while ice-skating. George and Alanna go to the City of the Gods to see Thom. On their way back they are attacked. George is hurt. Alanna fears that her friends will hate her when they learn that she has been lying to them about her gender. Jon tells her not to worry and she realizes that Myles already knows.
Chapter 9: The Ordeal
Alanna tells Gary that she is a girl. Alanna goes through her Ordeal. Alanna is knighted and Thom gives her her shield. He has spelled it so that it's true image (a lioness on a red background) is hidden until she reveals that she is a girl.
Chapter 10: To Duel the Sorcerer
Alanna and Faithful sneak into Duke Roger's room. Alanna finds an image of the Queen wasting away under dripping water and herself and others covered in a veil. Alanna confronts Roger in front of the Court and he demands trial by combat. Roger cuts through the corset she used to keep her chest flat and the Court learns that she is a girl. Roger attacks her and Alanna kills him.
Epilogue
Alanna and Coram head for the desert.
3 - The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
Chapter 1: The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
Alanna and Coram are attacked by hillmen. One is armed with a crystal sword that shears Lightning off at the hilt. They are rescued by the Bloody Hawk tribe. One of them remembers Alanna from the Black City and they go with the Bazhir back to the camp. Alanna meets Kara, Kourrem and Ishak. Akhan Ibn Nazzir, their shaman, thinks Alanna is a demon and will corrupt them. Halef, the headman, wants to make her and Coram members of the tribe. They hold a vote and the tribe votes for trial by combat.
Chapter 2: The Bloody Hawk
Alanna fights Hakim and wins. She spares his life. She and Coram become members of the tribe. The shaman has the crystal sword and Halef tries to touch it but is stopped just in time by Faithful and Alanna. Alanna realizes that the hilt of the sword was made by Duke Roger. She also learns that the Voice of the Tribes is Ali Mukhtab, whom she met in Persopolis. Mukhtab tells Alanna that he wants Jon to become the Voice after his death.
Chapter 3: Bazhir Shaman
Coram and Hakim ride back to Corus with the history Jon asked for and a letter from Mukhtab. Alanna catches Ibn Nazzir constructing a Gate of Idramm and stops him just in time. Gammal, the blacksmith, tries to repair Lightning but fails. Alanna learns that her three adopted children have not been taught how to control their Gift. Ibn Nazzir wants to kill them but Halef will not allow it. Two of George's men are caught posing as desertmen by another tribe. Alanna reassures them that she is fine and Halef sends them back to Corus. Alanna goes to try and talk to Ibn Nazzir but he attacks her and uses his own life-force to try and kill her. She kills him and becomes the tribe's new shaman.
Chapter 4: Studies in Sorcery
Alanna takes on Kara, Kourrem and Ishak as her students. She has a vision of Roger rising from the dead. She helps the tribe take on raiders and almost loses control of the crystal blade. Ishak begins to get impatient with the slow pace of his learning.
Chapter 5: Apprentices
The girls begin to teach Alanna how to weave. Ishak thinks it's women's work and not a valuable skill. Alanna proves him wrong by using thread magic. Hakim's mother, Mari Fahrar, offers to teach Alanna and the girls weaving. Coram returns from Corus with letters from George and Thom. Alanna's students help the tribe fight off raiders. Ishak tries to control the crystal but the magic turns on him and kills him.
Chapter 6: Ceremonies
Shamans and apprentices from other tribes arrive to trade spells, the beginnings of the greatest school for magic in existence. Myles and Jon arrive and Jon asks Alanna to marry him. Myles asks Alanna to be his daughter and heir and she accepts. Mukhtab falls ill. Jon goes through trial by combat against Amman Kemail and wins. He spares Amman's life and becomes a member of the tribe. Myles adopts Alanna in a Bazhir ritual similar to the one that made Alanna, Coram and Jon members of the tribe. Mukhtab begins to teach Jon the laws of the Bazhir. Alanna's 'chicks' go through the rite of shamans.
Chapter 7: The Voice of the Tribes
Kourrem and Kara decide that Kourrem should be head shaman. Alanna is still unsure about Jon's proposal. She isn't sure whether she wants to have children yet. Jon becomes the Voice and Mukhtab dies. Alanna tells Jon that she doesn't want to marry him and he takes it badly. He and Myles go back to Corus. While there, he is introduced to Princess Josiane of the Copper Isles.
Chapter 8: The King of the Thieves
Alanna and Coram go to Port Caynn to see George. Coram meets Rispah and Alanna learns about Josiane and Jon. She and George become lovers. George heads to Corus. On All Hallows, Thom takes Alanna's Gift for his experiments. Alanna saves George from being poisoned. George suspects Claw is behind the poisoning and goes to Corus to check up on him. Alanna and Coram head back to the Bazhir.
Chapter 9: At the Sign of the Dancing Dove
George, Marek and Ercole are attacked. They take an injured Marek to Eleni's house where George learns that his mother was hurt while probing Thom's spell. George meets Claw in the Dancing Dove and realizes that he talks like a noble. Myles recognizes Claw's voice but can't remember where he's heard it before. Myles also suspects that Thom was trying to raise the dead. George goes to see Thom and sees that he is in some sort of trouble.
Chapter 10: The Doomed Sorceress
Halef asks Alanna to check on a friend of his. She and Coram go to Alois, where the villagers are about to burn Halef's friend, a sorceress. Alanna manages to save her just in time but she is too badly hurt to survive. Before she dies, she gives Alanna an envelope for Halef and tells her how to repair her broken sword. Alanna and Coram bury her and Alanna erects a marker using her magic. After she recovers, she uses a Bazhir ritual to combine Lightning with the crystal sword. She also sees a vision in which Thom has brought Roger back from the dead.
Chapter 1: Lioness From Tortall
Alanna and Coram meet Liam Ironarm, the Shang Dragon, in Berat, Maren. Alanna meets the Mother Goddess while out riding. After she falls asleep and off her horse, Liam brings her back to the inn. Alanna shows the sorceress' map to Master Jendrai and he tells them that the map shows the location of the fabled Dominion Jewel. Alanna resolves to bring the Dominion Jewel back to Tortall. Coram and Alanna are attacked by Claw's men and Liam helps fight them off. Alanna is injured and Liam takes her back to the inn.
Chapter 2: The Road East
Liam decides to go with Coram and Alanna to the Roof of the World, through Sarain. They leave for Sarain and Liam begins to teach Alanna the Shang way of fighting. Liam tells Alanna that no one in Shang is Gifted because the Gifted know that they can always use their Gift to escape from a fight. Liam also reveals that he is afraid of the Gift. He and Alanna become lovers. They enter Sarain and are attacked by a group of people.
Chapter 3: The Warlord's Daughter
They learn that one of their captors is the Princess of Sarain, Thayet. She and her guard Buri are headed to Rachia. They agree to travel with Alanna, Coram and Liam. When they reach Rachia, Thayet is attacked by assassins. They find sanctuary in the convent but the priestesses won't let Thayet and Buri stay. They decide to go to the Roof of the World with Alanna.
Chapter 4: The Roof of the World
They cross into the Roof of the World. A strong blizzard comes around Mt Chitral, which is where the Dominion Jewel is hidden. Alanna sneaks out, despite hating the cold, and wins the Jewel from the spirit of the mountain. Liam is angry with her for letting Faithful witch him. They break off their relationship but agree to remain friends. They head back to Tortall on a diplomatic courier. While aboard, Alanna meets Raoul. He tells her that King Roald and Queen Lianne are dead and Jon is to be crowned King. He also tells her that Thom has raised Duke Roger from the dead.
Chapter 5: In the Capital of Tortall
Claw tries to kill Eleni so George takes her to Myles' house. He is attacked by more of Claw's men. Myles learns that Claw is Ralon of Malven. Jon is attacked by assassins while riding through Corus and George leads him and his people to safety. He goes to see Thom and notices that Thom is very ill. George warns him to beware of Roger. Jon and the Lord Provost uncover a plot by Claw to kill Jon. Claw escapes the Provost's men. Marek, Rispah and Ercole are brought to Myles' house badly hurt. The Lord Provost puts out a reward for the capture of Claw.
Chapter 6: Homecoming
Alanna and her friends meet George in Corus. They are taken to Myles' home. Alanna sees Thom and realizes that he is dying. Jon meets Thayet and Alanna notices that they are attracted to each other. Alanna meets Roger for the first time since Thom brought him back from the dead and tells Raoul that he is dangerous, even without his Gift. Alanna duels her fellow knights but Alex refuses to duel her. Jon wants to present Alanna and her friends to the Court that night, and Alanna gets her ears pierced. Alanna presents the Jewel to Jon in front of the Court.
Chapter 7: Period of Mourning
Jon makes Alanna his Champion and Alanna learns that Jon likes Thayet. Jon makes George his assistant spymaster and Baron of Pirate's Swoop. Alanna sees the Goddess again and she warns her that Jon's coronation is a crossroad in time and even she does not know what will happen. Master Si-cham arrives to see Thom. Thom gives Alanna some of his corrupted Gift so that he can look for a cure. Jon asks Alanna to give him the Jewel after he is crowned, when she makes her oath as King's Champion.
Chapter 8: Crossroad in Time
Jon is crowned and the earth begins to shake. Alanna senses that something is wrong with Thom and hurries to him. George stops her and she gives him the Jewel to take to Jon. Jon is attacked and everyone who is able comes to his defense, including Liam, Raoul, Thayet and Buri. Roger's draining of Thom's Gift kills him. Coram and George are attacked by Claw and his men. They kill them and take the Jewel to Jon. Si-cham links Alanna to Jon and gives him all of her Gift. Jon tries to hold the earth together. Josiane kills Si-cham and Faithful. After killing Josiane, Alanna heads down into the lower levels of the palace. Alex challenges Alanna and she kills him. She continues down into the catacombs and finds Roger. He has created a Gate of Idramm. Since Alanna has no Gift left, it does not affect her. Roger calls her sword to him, hoping that it will bring Alanna as well but Alanna lets it go and it kills him. Buri and the King's Own bring Alanna back to the surface and she learns that Liam died defending Jon.
Epilogue
Alanna goes back to the Bazhir. Buri and Thayet visit her. Alanna gives Thayet her blessing to marry Jon. Eda Bell, the Shang Wildcat and Liam's teacher, brings her a letter from him to Alanna, written before Liam died. George asks Alanna to marry him and she says yes.
