Chapter 1
Smallpox has hit Hatar. In Zakdin, Sandry is hidden in a secret room. Her nurse, a Trader named Pirisi, has been killed by a mob. Sandry unknowingly uses magic when she weaves light into a braided thread. Daja's ship has sunk in the southeastern Pebbled Sea. She is rescued by Niklaren Goldeye. In Hajira, Sotat, Roach is caught stealing for the third time. He is saved from the docks by Niko who offers to take him to Winding Circle temple. Roach changes his name to Briar Moss. In Ninver at the Stone Circle temple, Tris causes a gust of wind to upend everything in her dorm and terrifies her roommates who have been teasing her. The temple doesn't know what to do with her and Niko agrees to take her to Winding Circle. Back in the storeroom, Sandry is found by Niko.
Chapter 2
Niko has taken Sandry to live with her great-uncle Duke Vedris of Emelan. They both agree that it would be best for Sandry to be taken to Winding Circle. The Trader Council declares Daja trangshi. An angry Niko declares that he will take her to Winding Circle where she will be appreciated. Niko sparks Briar's interest in Winding Circle by telling him about their plants. On the ship to Emelan, Tris plays with Runog's Fire.
Chapter 3
Sandry and Daja meet. An earthquake rocks Winding Circle. Daja is attacked by three girls and two boys. Niko and Honoured Dedicate Moonstream put a stop to it. Niko suggests moving her to Discipline cottage. Briar is accused of stealing a cloak-pin. Tris and Sandry are moved to Discipline.
Chapter 4
Another small quake comes. Tris and Sandry meet Briar and Daja who are also at Discipline and Lark. Niko confiscates Briar's knifes. After Rosethorn's plants take a liking to Briar, she realises that he has plant magic. The children learn that Niko is a mage, not a dedicate. Tris hears voices on the wind and Sandry gives her a wall hanging.
Chapter 5
Daja meets Frostpine and she begins to help him with his work. Niko tells Tris that she needs to learn meditation to control her power. Briar wanders into the greenhouse and sees a sick plant. He is chased out by Dedicate Crane who suspects that Rosethorn sent him. Lark teaches Sandry how to weave. Briar tells Rosethorn about the sick tree and the children learn that they will all be learning meditation.
Chapter 6
The children have their first meditation lesson with Niko in the Hub. Briar and Tris go up onto the roof of the cottage. Briar is still worried about the sick tree.
Chapter 7
Lark and Sandry continue their lessons. Niko tells Tris the dangers of meddling with nature. Frostpine begins teaching Daja how to use her magic with metal and offers to teach her.
Chapter 8
Briar steals the tree and Rosethorn sorts everything out with Crane so that he can keep the tree.
Chapter 9
Lark makes Daja a scarlet armband. Rosethorn teaches Briar how to care for the shakkan. Kirel, Frostpine's apprentice, is shocked to see Daja hold hot metal in her hands.
Chapter 10
The children go to the market in Summersea. Sandry finds boys tormenting a puppy and the others come to help her defend it. Tris creates a whirlwind of water that causes havoc. The children realise for the first time that they have magic. They name the dog Little Bear. Another tremor hits.
Chapter 11
Frostpine tests Daja's ability to sense different metals. Tris tries to take strength from tidal waves and almost dies. Niko and Kirel bring her back to Discipline. Yet another tremor hits.
Chapter 12
Niko is summoned urgently to the Hub to help with bad omens. He tells the children that a quake might hit Ragat. Little Bear chases a mouse into a cave and the children go after him. A quake traps them underground. Tris senses another quake coming that has magic in it.
Chapter 13
Sandry spins all their magics together and they use their magic to keep their hollow from caving in as the earthquakes hit. They are rescued by their teachers and other dedicates. Lark and Niko tell them that Honoured Dedicate Huoth and Wave Circle temple mages tried to trap the earthquake and it grew too strong for their holding spells. It broke free and went in all directions. Briar, Tris and Sandry make a nightlight for Sandry.
Chapter 1
While Tris and the others are on top of the temple wall they hear two men murder a woman and blow up the Pirate's Point lighthouse. The watchtower on Bit Island is also blown up.
Chapter 2
Niko arrives at Discipline to take Tris up to the watchtower. He uses Tris's strength to conjure up a vision of the past where they see the three people from Tris's vision. He also puts a spell on Tris's glasses that allows her to see magic. Tris finds a baby starling, orphaned by the blast.
Chapter 3
Daja, Frostpine and Kirel pull up the spell-net which has been damaged by the blasts. Lark teaches Sandry a quick way to weave bandages with her magic.
Chapter 4
Tris takes the starling to Rosethorn who tells her how to take care of it (she likes birds better than people). Briar sees someone using an invisibility spell in the Hub. Daja has been seeing azigazis (visions) of a ship all day. Frostpine shows her how sense metal out on the sea and they finds a pirate's scout vessel.
Chapter 5
Vedris visits Sandry and Aymery arrives at Discipline with a letter for Niko. All of the crystals and mirrors in the Hub's seeing-room shatter. Aymery tells Tris that she should leave Winding Circle and go back to her family.
Chapter 6
An unnatural storm comes across Winding Circle. Frostpine and Daja go into the harbour to strengthen and renew the spells on the harbour chain. A cloaked pirate fleet attacks them with boom-stones. Two hit the Harbourmaster's Tower and the Tombstone.
Chapter 7
The others sense what is happening to Daja and see it through her eyes. Rosethorn tells Briar a little of her past. Frostpine and Daja are brought back to Discipline.
Chapter 8
Winding Circle prepares for an attack. Briar and Tris go up to the wall looking for Niko and Moonstream. Pirates begin firing boom-stones and Tris uses her magic to stop two of them from hitting. They visit Gorse's kitchen and run into Aymery coming out.
Chapter 9
Senior mages are summoned to the wall the next morning. The pirates have shed their illusion spells. Rosethorn and Briar grow thorns to help defend the South Gate. More boom-stones are fired. The pirates attack the plants and the plants bury their attackers. Niko finds out about the thread Sandry wove their powers together with and confiscates it. An exhausted Rosethorn is brought back to Discipline.
Chapter 10
Briar searches Aymery's room and finds an unbroken scrying mirror. Briar tells Tris but she doesn't believe that he is up to something. That night they see Aymery sneaking off and follow him. Aymery opens the gate and lets the pirates in. One pirate kills him and begins killing all the drugged dedicates and novices. Tris's hail begins to wake them up and Sandry and Daja arrive to help after warning Lark and Niko. Their teachers arrive to take down the rest of the pirates.
Chapter 11
Tris experiments with her lightning magic as Daja and Sandry repair a piece of the spell-net. Lark, Gorse, Rosethorn and Niko work out the contents of the power in the boom-stones. The carpenters' shops is hit. Tris tries hitting distant objects with her lightning in the hope of being able to hit a boom-stone.
Chapter 12
Moonstream plans to evacuate the children. They sneak off to the wall to help defend Winding Circle. Tris uses a waterspout to try and break through the pirates' defences. The others join their magics with hers and they succeed. They attack the pirates separately. Tris destroys one of the ships with her lightning.
Chapter 13
The children are caught up in the mage Enahar's web. Niko gives the children their thread to draw strength from. Their teachers give them even more strength and they break free of Enahar's web. They cut Enahar off from them and the other mages on the ships. Enahar tries to use Aymery's earring to snare Tris but Briar, Sandry and Daja destroy the earring. While Tris is helping out in the infirmary she tells Niko that she needs to work on her control. The children feed the starling his first meal of worms.
Chapter 1
On the way to the Mire, Sandry nags Briar about his birthday and he agrees to pick a day. One of Briar's street friends, Flick, is sick and Briar goes to see her. He realizes that it's serious and calls Rosethorn. Rosethorn comes and takes Flick back to Urda's House.
Chapter 2
Sandry, Tris and Niko are visiting Sandry's uncle when Rosethorn tells the girls to get Niko. Briar tells them that he and Rosethorn will be in quarantine for a while. Niko goes to see Rosethorn at Urda's House. Rosethorn is angry at Niko because he had seen signs of an epidermic but hadn't done anything about it. The girls learn from Lark that Crane and Rosethorn often work together to find cures for new diseases.
Chapter 3
Frostpine rages at a dedicate because they don't have enough warded boxes for disease samples. Briar is hoping that Rosethorn will be able to save Flick.
Chapter 4
Crane comes to Discipline and asks Lark to add a layer of protection to his gloves and masks and asks Sandry to help. More infected people are brought to Urda's House. Flick gets worse. Henna, a healer from Winding Circle, teaches Briar about healing.
Chapter 5
Niko asks Tris about the oncoming storm because he thinks that the disease is carried through water. Tris could move the storm but it wouldn't do them any good since there's a line of storms coming in. More people in town are sick.
Chapter 6
Briar learns that Rosethorn's birthday is on Longnight. They work on strengthening medicines with their magic. Briar realizes that Rosethorn is weak and needs plants around to strengthen her. He asks Tris to bring his shakkan and some other plants to Urda's House.
Chapter 7
Flick dies and Briar and Rosethorn go back to Winding Circle since a way to diagnose the illness has been discovered and Briar and Rosethorn are cleared.
Chapter 8
The kids learn that their teachers are actually great mages and are very powerful. Tris's starling returns. Briar and Rosethorn start working with Crane to find a cure.
Chapter 9
The other dedicates are betting on how long it will take Crane to get rid of the people working for him. Briar sees magic in the sample trays and suggests to Crane that Tris might make a better note-taker. Crane agrees to give her a try and Briar tells her to come to the greenhouse. Tris spots the magic in the blue pox.
Chapter 10
Niko and Tris go into Summersea and follow the magic trail through the sewers to it's source. Niko does a spell to see the past and learns that the blue pox was created by a mage trying to make a weight loss potion.
Chapter 11
Niko congratulates Briar on seeing the blue pox and getting Tris in as well. Rosethorn and Crane find the first key to the cure. Rosethorn comes down with the blue pox. Just before she goes back to Discipline, she shows Crane the third key.
Chapter 12
Briar doesn't want to stop for the night but Osprey tells him that Crane needs the rest. Henna dies. Crane finds two more keys. Rosethorn comes out with spots. Osprey finds another key. Rosethorn offers to be a guinea pig when Crane comes up with a formula that can be tested. She asks Daja to tell the other girls to look after Briar when she's gone. Crane finds the rest of the keys and begins to work on a cure. Crane finds a cure that works on the essence of the blue pox and starts trying it on patients, including Rosethorn. Rosethorn starts to get better but the cure doesn't work on everybody so Crane continues to refine it.
Chapter 13
Rosethorn catches pneumonia. Lark tries to find a healer strong enough to help her. Rosethorn almost dies. The four children use their magic to keep her alive until Briar convinces her to come back with him. Lark returns with Moonstream and Moonstream heals Rosethorn. Briar decides that his birthday should be the day after he arrived at Discipline, when Rosethorn asked him to come down and work in her garden.
