The Bank of America Foundation granted to the Kansas Urban Forestry Council $5,000 as part of their Community Catalyst Grant program. The program is designed to be in support of environmental initiatives, including native tree planting. "Bank of America believes that environmental restoration is an integral component of our doing business in today's world," said Jim Kramer, President, The Bank of America, Lindsbor and McPherson. "The health of our environment directly affects the quality of our lives, and we are pleased this grant will help KUFC continue its mission of planting trees and providing educational assistance to the forestry movement in Kansas through training, volunteer coordination and technical assistance. The Bank of America Catalyst Grants is an ongoing program managed by the Bank of America Foundation, in which $250,000 in grants are awarded on a quarterly basis, to non profit organizations with operating budgets of $500,000 or less.

In addition to planting thousands of trees each year, KUFC also educates the public about the environmental benefits and economic value of trees through the annual recycling and COMPOSTING WORKS conference. KUFC has also been featured in magazine and newspaper articles and on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS:, TBS, CNN, Ghana-Africa TV and Surinane-S.A. TV. In 1966 the KUFC received the National Excellence Award from HUD honoring the project as one of the top 24 innovative/problem-solving projects in America.

McPherson High School Volunteers, spring 2000

McPherson High students set the all time high for tree potting at the Station this spring. MS Kathy Heidebrecht, Spanish teacher, led the group from McPherson High School in their effort to be #1. Two thousand nine hundred seedlings in one day!
Students came from Lindsborg, hesston, Concordia, Ell-Saline, Jackson Heights, Inman, Marquette, Newton, Salina and Bethany College to help get the 10,000 seedlings from the National tree Trust into pots. The potting effort in the spring is coordinated by Natalie, Thad and Wes. Thanks to everyone who participated in the effort.

   Planning to pick up some of those trees that have been "growing-out" at the statiion call Wes to arrange your time. We try to make it convenient for all, since we know it takes time and effort for communities to arrange the trip.

   There have been over 100,000 trees raised at the Station and a great deal of credit goes to the COMPOST that is made at the station.
