Jack Palance and Victor Mature were both considered for the lead.
Frank Sinatra expressed interest in this project, but didn't commit fast enough. Harris was able to get the rights with a $10,000 check.
United Artists would only put up $200,000 for the budget, Producer James Harris had to raise $120,000. Kubrick wasn't paid, the film didn't make any money, but Kirk Douglas noticed it and agreed to do Paths of Glory because of it.
