For those unaware of the characters in the DC / Marvel Universe, Here is a description of the major players in this story.
BATMAN

As a boy, Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents' gruesome murder by an unknown gunman and vowed revenge against all who broke the law. As a young adult, he worked to fulfil this vow by travelling the world to learn from masters of various defence disciplines. Eventually he became an exceptional escape artist, master of martial arts, acrobatics, science, technology, boxing, disguises, criminology and detective skills. Having perfected his skills, Bruce Wayne is prepared to embark on his mission. But one thing eludes him -- the ability to strike fear in the hearts of the criminals he will confront while protecting his true identity.
One night, in his father's study, Bruce Wayne relives the horror of his parents' death. Suddenly, in a terrifying flash of blackness, the window is shattered by the striking image of a black bat. In that moment, Bruce Wayne's destiny is determined. He would become the night... he would become the Batman. Bound by his personal code of justice, Batman resolves to never kill an enemy. Instead, he relies on his physical prowess and mental superiority to bring his enemies to justice.
During the day, Bruce Wayne is CEO of Wayne Enterprises and maintains the public image of a millionaire playboy. In fact, Bruce goes to great lengths convincing others that the self-centred socialite is his true self. Bruce Wayne is the disguise, Batman is the true personality.
CAPTAIN AMERICA

Steve Rogers was born during the Depression and grew up a frail
youth in a poor family. His father died when he was a child, his mother when he
was in his late teens. Horrified by newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe,
Rogers was inspired to try to enlist in the Army. However, because of his
frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea to be
accepted, General Chester Phillips of the U.S. Army offered Rogers the
opportunity to take part in a special experiment called Operation: Rebirth.
Rogers agreed and was taken to a secret laboratory in Washington, D.C. where he
was introduced to Dr. Abrahan Erskine (code named: Prof. Reinstein), the creator
to the Super-Soldier formula.
After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Soldier serum.
Given part of the compound intravenously and another part orally, Rogers was
then bombarded by "vita-rays," a special combination of exotic (in 1941)
wavelengths of radiation designed to accelerate and stabilize the serum's effect
on his body. Steve Rogers emerged from the vita-ray chamber with a body as
perfect as a body can be and still be human. A Nazi spy who observed the
experiment murdered Dr. Erskine mere minutes after its conclusion. Erskine died
without fully committing the Super-Soldier formula to paper, leaving Steve
Rogers the Sole beneficiary of his genius.
Roger was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program,
teaching him gymnastics, hand-to-hand combat and military strategy. Three months
later, he was given his first assignment, to stop the Nazi agent called the Red
Skull. To help him become a symbolic counterpart to the Red Skull, Rogers was
given the red, white, and blue costume of Captain America.
During the war, he served as both a symbol of freedom and America's most
effective special operative. Then, during the final days of the war, he was
trying to stop a bomb-loaded drone-plane launched by Nazi technician Baron
Heinrich Zemo when the plane exploded, killing his partner Bucky; and throwing
him unhurt into icy Arctic waters. The Super-Soldier formula prevented
crystallization of Captain America's bodily fluid, allowing him to enter a state
of suspended animation. Decades later, he was rescued by the newly-formed
Avengers and became a cornerstone of the team. His might undiminished. Captain
America remains a symbol of liberty and justice.
COMMISSIONER GORDON

Batman trusts and confides in James Gordon. The Gotham PD is crawling with crooked men. Gordon is an honoured police officer and father of Barbara Gordon. Through devotion and remaining an honest cop among mass corruption, Gordon rose through the ranks to Lieutenant, and ultimately to Commissioner. Even though Gordon does not know the identity of the man under the mask, Batman and James Gordon share a special friendship. Their secret meeting places to discuss strategies and criminals have become a mainstay in their relationship. Although Gotham City embraces Batman, Gordon is still chastised for relying on the Dark Knight over those with the legal authority in Gotham . . . but Gordon wouldn't have it any other way.
RUPERT THORNE

Rupert Thorne controls most of the underworld dealings around Gotham, and has competition in the form of Arnold Stromwell. Rupert Thorne is usually able to avoid be apprehended by the police, but whenever he is caught, he's able to quickly get released, and back to business. Thorne is responsible for Harvey Dent becoming Two-Face and the two despise each other to this day. He is also looking to permanently finish off Batman, to complete his control over Gotham. Thorne has everyone from politicians to policemen on the take. While Thorne does have some "legit" businesses, almost every Gothamite knows about his dirty dealings.
ALFRED

Butler to the Wayne family, Alfred Pennyworth has known Bruce Wayne most of his life. After the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Alfred became a second father to Bruce and is one of the few who are privy to the secrets contained beneath Wayne Manor. In addition to his duties as Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred tends to much of the high tech gadgetry in the Batcave, and is an expert mechanic. Once an agent for the British Secret Service before joining the Wayne household, Alfred is the voice of reason for the often emotional Batman and Robin. Although he openly voices his opinion about his employer's nocturnal activities, he also believes that their cause is a just one.
DETECTIVE BULLOCK

Bullock is a long time detective on the Gotham Police Force. Fat, unshaven, poorly dressed, and always chewing on an old toothpick, Bullock is hardly the poster boy for a good cop. He's always thought to be on the take because of his questionable methods, yet Bullock is one of Gotham's finest. He enforces the law his own way, often being pulled off cases or suspended for his actions. Bullock has his own methods and style, but he stands by and believes in the law. Often accusing Batman of working on the wrong side of the law, Bullock has been against the idea of Batman since he first appeared in Gotham. Strangely enough, there have been occasions when Bullock and Batman have worked together, and even times when Bullock has called upon Batman personally for assistance. Bullock is certainly one of the most interesting characters in Gotham City.
