| Expansion on Dutch Experiments by British farmers concluded in higher crop yields. New methods of crop rotation was also tested by others. Lord Charles Townshend urged farmers to grow turnips. Turnips restored exhasted soild. This earned him the nickname "Turnip Townshend." Jethro Tull was the inventor of the seed drill, a mechanical device. It aided farmers by depostiting seeds in rows, rather than scattering them wastefully over the land. Robert Bakewell bred stronger horses for fam work. He also bred fatter sheep and cattle for meat. The strip farms of the 1500s were soon replaced with larger fields that could be cultivated more effectively The population of Europe gew from about 120 million to about 190 million in the same period. Water power was used more effectively and efficiently. Inventions such as the giant water wheel was created. It powerd the machines in the first facotries. The new machines that were being invented were too large and expensive to be operated at home. Long sheds were build to house the machines. These became known as factories. |
