Calls originated in Holland, where they were bred to use as live decoys. The hen's loud, fast, high-pitched call was very successful at attracting wild ducks. Calls are directly descended from Mallards, thus grey is the original variety. Grey calls were in the first APA standard, and have been growing in popularity ever since. They have curious, friendly personalities, and when tamed, make great pets.
Call hens are generally poor layers, but they do make good mothers. Eggs are a challenge to hatch in an incubator, but with a little extra effort, they can be hatched successfully.
