Pictures from an Exhibition
Tableaux d'une Exposition
Orchestrated by
WALTER GOEHR
FULL SCORE 25.s 0d.
HAWKES & SON, (LONDON) LTD.
THIS transcription of “Pictures from an Exhibition” has been made to meet the requirements of orchestras of less than full “symphonic” proportions. The existing versions by Ravel and others are inaccessible to many organizations, professional as well as amateur, in that they are scored for a very large orchestra with no possibilities of reduction or cueing. The maximum scoring of this version, as shown on the opposite page, is for a medium-sized orchestra with double woodwind. Cues have, however, been liberally inserted in the parts so that the work can be played by considerably smaller ensembles. A suitable combination would be as follows :
Flute (doubling Piccolo).
Oboe (preferably doubling Cor Anglais).
2 Clarinets (2nd preferably doubling E♭ Alto Saxophone and Bass Clarinet).
Bassoon.
2 Horns.
2 Trumpets.
1st Trombone.
Timpani} Percussion} 2 players.
Harp.
Piano.
Organ (if possible).
Strings.
Shorter suites can be played if desired. The following are suggested : (1) consisting of movements I to VIa (13 minutes); (2) consisting of movements IVa, IIIa and VIa (8 minutes). Both of these can also be played by a still smaller orchestra consisting of the following : Flute, Oboe, 2 Clarinets, 2 Trumpets, 1st Trombone, Timpani and Percussion (1 player only), Piano and Strings. The Piano part is essential.
Some slight modifications of the original have been made in the present version among them some cuts, and the introduction of the lively “Market of Limoges” as the first, instead of the seventh, number after the opening “Promenade.” The transcriber believes that the work will thereby be rendered more suitable for performance as an orchestral concert item.
MOUSSORGSKY derived the inspiration for this work from an exhibition in Moscow, in 1874, of water colours and drawings by the Russian architect Victor Hartmann. Hartmann, who died the preceding year, was for a time an intimate friend of the composer. Each movement of the work bears the name of one of Hartmann's pictures, while the Introduction and interludes entitled “Promenade” depict the composer as he strolls from one exhibit to another.
