なぜ自らオーケストレーションを行なったのか

私はピアノを演奏するときにはいつも、オーケストラならどのような表現になるだろうかと考えている。 私にとってこの「展覧会の絵」という名曲は、特に強くオーケストラとの関連性を感じさせる。 そのため私は、ピアノからシンフォニー・オーケストラという大きなキャンバスに置き換えたとき、この曲がいかに響くべきかということについて、個人的なヴィジョンをいろいろと抱き、発展させてきた。 遅々とした、また抑え難い感情を伴う、こうした過程を経て生まれたのが、このレコーディングで私が表現しているものなのである。 私はムソルグスキーのイディオムと、彼がこの組曲の楽想を練ったとき、作曲者の心の中にあったと私が信じるものとに、忠実であることを主旨としてこの難事に挑戦した。 効果を狙うために手を加えたりはしていない。 いずれかのパッセージで新たな創意や輝きをもって響くことがあれば、それは手を加えたからではなく、暗い色調が支配的なこの曲の底流に私が導かれた結果である。 言い方を変えれば、私は曲の外部からではなく、むしろ内面から取り組もうと心がけたわけだ。 そしてその結果はある程度の妥当性を有するものになったと思う。

重要な点を注意しておこう。 ラヴェルの巧妙なオーケストレーションの中にも、幾つかの原典上の誤まりがあるということである。 おそらくそれは、自分のヴァージョンを書く間に彼が用いた、貧弱なピアノ出版楽譜に由来するものだろう。 不幸なことに、現在広く聴かれるレコーディングは、事実上これらのミスをそっくりそのまま再現してしまっている。 手書き譜に基づくピアノ・ヴァージョンの出版楽譜を参照することで、容易にその誤りを正すことができるのにもかかわらず、である。 私のヴァージョンでは、少なくともこれらのミスを正すことはできたということで、満足できるものだと思っている。

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition

  This Compact Disc brings together for the first time two performances of Modest Mussorgsky's masterpiece, the Pictures at an Exhibition. The first part of the disc is devoted to Vladimir Ashkenazy's interpretation of the composer's original version for solo piano, while the remainder features his recent and acclaimed orchestral transcription of the work, of which he has written:
  'I always think in terms of orchestral colour when I play the piano and since this masterpiece evokes the strongest orchestral associations for me. I have developed my own personal vision of how the piece should sound when transposed from the piano to the larger canvas of the symphony orchestra. The result of this slow and irresistible process is what I offer on this recording. My approach to this challenge has been based on complete loyalty to Mussorgsky's idiom and to what I believe was in the composer's mind when he conceived this cycle. I have not been concerned with effect for its own sake, however inventive or brilliant a certain passage might sound, but instead I have been guided by the deeper undercurrents of this predominantly dark-coloured piece. In other words, I have tried to work from within the music rather than from without and I hope the result has a certain validity.
  It is important to note that in Ravel's masterly orchestration there are a number of textual errors which probably resulted from his use of a poor edition of the piano score while working on his version. Unfortunately, all currently available recordings reproduce practically all these mistakes, although they could be so easily corrected by referring to an edition of the piano version based on the manuscript. I must confess that it feels good that at least in my version these mistakes can be put right.'
