| Peter Maughan was born on May 7, 1811 in Breckonside, Farlam, Cumberland, England to William and Martha Wilson Maughan. His first wife was Ruth Harrison. She was born on January 26, 1812 in Weston, Alston, Cumberland, England. Peter and Ruth were married on October 1, 1831 in Alston, Cumberland, England. They had six children: John Harrison, Agnes, William Harrison, Thomas Harrison, Mary Ann, and Ruth. Ruth died on March 26, 1841 in Alston, Cumberland, England leaving Peter with six small children. Peter took the children and set sail for America to join the other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His baby daughter died at sea and was buried in the Atlantic Ocean. Peter married Mary Ann Weston on November 2, 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois. Together, they traveled across the plains with the pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and settled in Tooele, then Cache Valley. Peter was a wonderful father, husband, friend, leader, farmer, miner, stonemason, colonizer, Indian agent, legislator, chairman of the settlement committe, county clerk, probate judge, bishop and an officator in the endowment house. One of his most famous stories is of his encounter with Chief Bear Hunter. They had 8 children: Charles Weston, Peter Weston, Joseph Weston, Hyrum Weston, Willard Weston, Elizabeth Weston Martha Weston, and Peter Weston Maughan. Peter married Elizabeth Frances Praetor on December 8, 1866 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had three children: Frances Mary, Heber Chase and Ada Lucille Maughan. |
