KEN STREMSKY DISCUSSES FARMING 

                  HONEYBEES AND OUR FOOD SUPPLY

                  The May 14, 2002 Washington Post on page A1 has a very 
                  important article with the title "Honeybees in a Mite More 
                  Than Trouble: Parasites, an Exodus of Apiarists and Budget 
                  Cuts Imperil Vital Insect" by Adrian Higgins. 

                  I read the article on www.washingtonpost.com. 

                  After you read this section, I hope you will read the full 
                  article and my farm subsidies section located on this website 
                  and ask yourself why we are giving billions of dollars in farm 
                  subsidies to Fortune 500 companies while cutting back on 
                  funding dealing with honeybees which are essential for our 
                  food supply. 

                  Congress should pass a law that says that beekeepers and 
                  orchardists should not have to pay a federal tax rate greater 
                  than ten percent on the first $10,000,000 in profits they 
                  obtain each year from beekeeping and/or orchards. 

                  Congress should make sure that no bee research laboratories 
                  are closed. Congress should make sure we have at least 10 bee 
                  research labs. Congress should also increase the funding of 
                  the bee research labs to at least $25 million a year, and make 
                  sure the combined staff of the research labs has at least 80 
                  people. 

                  Congress should also give at least $30 million more dollars to 
                  the National Institutes of Health for genome sequencing of 
                  organisms, tell the National Institutes of Health to 
                  immediately start genome sequencing the honeybee with at least 
                  $15 million. 

                  Congress should make sure at least $100 million in farm 
                  subsidies goes to beekeepers and orchardists. 

                  FARM SUBSIDIES

                  I realize how important farmers are to our country. I want 
                  our country to have more small farms including family owned 
                  farms. Congress should pass a law that says that farmers do 
                  not have to pay a federal tax rate greater than 10 percent on 
                  the first $10,000,000 in profits they make each year. 

                  I found articles about farm subsidies when I typed farm 
                  subsidies on www.google.com. 

                  The Daily Telegraph which is published in Britain and has the 
                  website www.telegraph.co.uk has an article with the title 
                  "Britain attacks $51 bn in US farm subsidies" written by David 
                  Wastell and Francis Elliott. 

                  You may find out more information about farm subsidies and 
                  which Fortune 500 companies are getting farm subsidies by 
                  going to the Environmental Working Group's Farm Subsidy 
                  Database which is located at www.ewg.org/farm. 

                  I believe that farm subsidies are often a good idea for small 
                  farms. I think it is usually insane to give farm subsidies to 
                  Fortune 500 companies. I think farm subsidies should usually 
                  not be given to businesses that have yearly sales greater than 
                  $50,000,000 a year. When we give farm subsidies to businesses 
                  that make more than $50,000,000 a year, we have less money 
                  available to give to small farms and farming communities that 
                  need the money a lot more. Our country might not want to give 
                  farm subsidies to businesses that make more than $10,000,000 a 
                  year. 

                  FARMING FOR FISH

                  The May 9, 2002 Union Leader has a great editorial with the 
                  title "Farming for fish: There is a better way to reap the 
                  ocean's bounty." The editorial may be found on the Union 
                  Leader's website which is www.theunionleader.com. 

                  I believe government should create property rights dealing 
                  with fish farming.

                  Congress may want to pass a law that says that businesses that 
                  farm for fish do not have to pay a federal tax rate greater 
                  than 10 percent on the first $10,000,000 in profits they 
                  obtain each year from farming for fish. 

                  Congress may want to spend 100 million dollars a year 
                  subsidizing the farming for fish industry.
