KEN STREMSKY DISCUSSES EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES The United States of America should become a country that does not discriminate against people because of their race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, and national origin. Many people are discriminated against on a daily basis in our country for the previous reasons. Many innocent people have probably ended up on death row and been executed becausethey had black skin. Men have been murdered because they were homosexuals. Women get raped on a regular basis in our country especially on college campuses. Women often get harassed by male co-workers in our country. Our military continues to discrimate against men and women who are homosexuals. The ability to fight well should be more important than a person's sexual orientation. Our economy for far too long depended upon slavery. We had a Civil War that finally ended it. It is too bad we were not able to end slavery peacefully like many other nations. The United States of America imprisoned Americans of Japanese descent because they were Japanese during World War 2. The families of many American soldiers of Japanese descent were imprisoned because they were Japanese. Our country did not imprison people because they were of German descent and/or Italian descent during World War 2. The federal government tried to kill of Native American tribes by giving them blankets that had smallpox. The United States of America can and should do much better. We should have color blind admissions for k-12 public schools, k-12 private schools, public colleges, and public universities. The color of a person's skin should not be a factor in college admissions. A person's economic background should be a factor. A person's drive to succeed should be a factor. To admit a black man who is from a wealthy family who did not do well in school over a white man from a poor family who did very well in school is a form of discrimination. Ability and drive should be more important than race in the college admissions process. Our country should give State Legislatures the power to pardon people, change death penalty convictions to life in prison, and change other prison sentences as well. Our country is discriminating against poor families now by forcing them to send their children to public schools. Our country spends more money on a per student basis for public education than most countries in the world and we do not get much for our money because of bloated administrative staffs in many school systems. We should allow parents to use money to send their children to private schools including private religious schools. We should be encouraging all citizens who are at least 18 years old who are allowed to vote to vote. We should require a State photo identification to decrease voter fraud. All states should have ballots that are as easy to understand as the ballots that Manchester, NH has for Congressional candidates. Our country should be willing to help people who want to help themselves and people who are not able to help themselves. Helping out people who are able to help themselves and are unwilling to do so is a waste of tax dollars.
