KEN STREMSKY DISCUSSES INCEASING AVAILABLE DRINKING WATER

      Ann McFeatters who is the Washington bureau chief for the Pittsburgh 
      Post-Gazette has a great article in the August 24, 2002 Concord Monitor on 
      page B5 with the title

      "This year's drought should be getting more attention."

      Our country needs to increase its supply of drinking water.

      The following proposals will increase the amount of available drinking 
      water.

      Our country should build many desalinization plants on the West Coast, the 
      East Coast, and the Gulf of Mexico.  The desalinization plants will turn 
      ocean water which is salt water into drinking water.

      The desalinization plants could obtain their energy for desalinization 
      from solar energy panels and/or hydrogen fuel cells.  I think nuclear 
      power plants have been used to provide energy for desalinization plants.  
      I am not sure using nuclear power for use with desalinization plants is a 
      good idea.

      The country should build pipelines similar to oil pipelines that will 
      carry water throughout the country.

      Our country may want to create artificial lakes in the West with some of 
      the drinking water.  If our country creates artificial lakes, our country 
      should plant trees near these lakes.  These lakes might dry up.  I think 
      its worth taking the chance to see if they would.  Our country could 
      increase its population in areas where many people do not live now if we 
      are able to create artificial lakes.

      I hope companies will create a type of grass that does not require much 
      water.

      I hope companies will design toilets that use less water and only need to 
      be flushed once to get the job done.

      I hope our Federal Government will help farmers grow crops in a way that 
      use a lot less water possibly via very large greenhouses.

      I hope our country will increase water conservation.
