UNIT OVERVIEW

Day 1: Using Fraction Manipulatives

The first day is introductory to where we see fractions around us and using manipulatives to for students to work with something concrete. Students will work cooperatively to find equivalent fractions.

Day 2: Finding a mathematical process to compare fractions

In whole class instruction, misconceptions about comparing fractions will be addressed. After the introductory lesson using manipulatives, this lesson shows students a process using Least Common Multiples to compare fractions. The students work together in their groups to practice the skill.

Day 3: Step-by-Step Process of Comparing Fractions

A guided layout of the steps in comparing fractions should be modeled for the class. Then students will work in cooperative groups using the four step process shown by the teacher.

Day 4: Individual Practice Comparing Fractions

A worksheet is made for students to practice their skills individually. The teacher can then circulate the room to work with students struggling with the process.

Day 5: Being Bakers --- Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Students should be set up in groupings of high diversity and mixed ability level. They will be asked to find a way to add fractions with unlike denominators. Students should already know how to add fractions with like denominators.

Then there should be a regrouping with the whole class asking essential questions getting to the basis of adding and subtracting fractions.

Day 6: Domino Fractions

I modified a lesson plan found on the internet at http://www.learnnc.org/. The exact lesson is found at http://www.learnnc.org/LearnNC/lessonp.nsf/docunid/E3E8BD13C50D2F8B85256977006ED943?opendocument. We will use the dominoes to set up problems to compare fractions as well as add/subtract fractions. I will begin with many examples as a whole class, then students will be able to work in groups of four to continue the activity. Students will write the fraction problems as pictures and numbers.

Day 7 & 8:

Centers: There will be centers covering the 3 objectives I have covered.

1.12: Add and subtract fractions – like denominators

1.14 Use models/pictures to add & subtract fraction and mixed numbers

This will be the baking center. Students will have word problems set up as if they were mixing many ingredients together. There will be measuring cups set up at the station. The students will practice their adding and subtracting skills at this station as if they were running a bakery. They will also draw a diagram of the addition to incorporate 1.14

1.11: Compare & Order Fractions

The domino activity of the previous day will be set up for students. They can practice comparing and ordering the fractions that are shown on the domino pieces.

1.12: Add/Subtract Fractions

At computers, there will be a program that has students find equivalent fractions and another program that has students practice adding/subtracting fractions

1.11, 1.12, 1.14: Making Word Problems Station

Students will make up their own word problems after choosing an "answer" out of the envelope. The word problems will incorporate adding, subtracting, comparing, or drawing fractions.
