He could point to the moment when his future was set. It began, not with an act of terror, but of kindness.
In this troubled time, abandoned by Sirius and James, he was rescued by Arthur Weasley. They talked of the murders, of their betrayal by Dumbledore. Arthur made Peter feel that he mattered, was important to someone. So when Arthur put an arm around his shoulder and asked him to visit Professor Riddle with him, he willingly agreed.
From that moment on, his heart and loyalty was given to Arthur, and after a time, to Professor Riddle/Voldemort as well.
