In Every Generation

The girl murmured restlessly in her sleep and rolled over on her side. The thin pallet she slept on was one step up from the cold floor beneath but she hardly noticed. She had become accustomed to a great many things since her imprisonment. Barely edible gruel, cruel tauntings and malicious torture all these had been her lot since the night she and her Watcher had decided to observe a particularly troublesome nest of vampires. Her Watcher had been killed when a returning vampire, fresh from a kill, had discovered their hiding place. She had fought valiantly, but her strength as a potential Slayer was not enough to save her Watcher or herself. She had been brought to the leader as a gift but for some unfathomable reason, he did not kill her. Instead, he had her locked in a cage and used for amusement.

Her dreams, usually full of dark shadows and indistinct figures, were sharp and vivid tonight. This latest dream was set in the midst of a great battle. From above, she gazed at the chaos taking place. Two female participants, both blondes with a young appearance, were locked in mortal combat. Behind them rose a large, imposing structure. At the top of this structure, a young girl stood, chains on her wrists and tears dripping down her face. A few moments passed as she surveyed the scene. Then she was standing on top of the structure. One of the blonde females had evidently freed the young girl and was hugging her fiercely. The older whispered into the younger girls ear then released her. Behind the two, a glowing portal was slowly opening. The blonde girl turned then jumped into the portal, ending her life and that of the dream.

She sat up, her breath coming in sharp gasps. The events detailed in the dream were real, she knew. How she knew this, she could not say, but she could feel the truth deep in her bones. And she knew something else. She stood up and approached the gate leading out of her cell. A sentry glanced idly at her as she stopped a few inches from the gate.

"Whatre you about, human?" he growled, irritated at being left behind to guard this walking bag of blood.

She said nothing then kicked the gate as hard as she could. The gates flew off their hinges and landed on the ground with a resounding the crash. The sentry barely had time to speak before she grabbed his throat and yanked him from his chair. She threw him into her former cell with such force, the walls cracked. She smashed the chair on the floor. Thanking the Powers That Be that the chair was made of wood, she picked up a nasty-looking shard of wood and advanced towards the stunned sentry.

"What are you," he gasped. "What the bloody hell are you?"

She smiled, a twisted grin that frightened the vampire more than being flung into the wall. "Im a Vampire Slayer," she answered before she plunged the makeshift stake into his heart. "The newest one."
