Introduction

The province of Negros Oriental prides herself with beauty and serenity. Comprised of five cities and twenty towns, the province is rich in natural resources, beautiful countryside, and colorful festivals as well as warm and friendly populace. You will work as a marketing group selling Negros Oriental through her fiesta celebrations to the rest of the world so that foreigners will be attracted to visit the province.

The Task

You will look for travel advertisements and travel websites that will help you create your main objective, an online travel brochure.

Your travel brochure will include descriptive essays, geographical maps, and photo essays with captions.

The Process

To carry out your task, you will be part of a group and do the assigned city/town.

1.      Within your assigned group of 12 members, work in pairs and agree on the different responsibilities in developing the team’s final presentation.

2.      Each pair of each group will do any of the following: historical background and profile of the city/town, fiesta celebration (date of the fiesta, patron saint, purpose of the celebration, the preparation, and a personal experience interview), cultural events, scenic/historical sites, transport facilities and accommodation, and collection of pictures.

3.      Organize a notebook to record all your materials for your work and envelopes to keep your collected pictures and drawings of your geographical maps. You should complete your research within a three-month period from September to November 2003. Keep a diskette in case your pictures/maps are taken from online resources. Be sure to keep a back-up copy of your electronic files.

4.      Refer to the following web resources/sites that your group can use.

       http://travel.discovery.com/ - travel channel news

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/index.cfm – general information for destinations of your choice

http://travel.yahoo.com/ - general information for destinations off your choice

http://www.lakbay-pilipinas.coms.ph/travel_negros_oriental.html – general information about Negros Oriental

http://www.gov.ph/ - official government portal of the Rep. of the Philippines

http://www.negor.gov.ph/ - official website of Negros Oriental

You can also visit the following offices and interview a representative of it:

Provincial Tourism Office, Aqua Sports Center, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City

City Tourism Office, Ground Floor, City Hall, Dumaguete City

National Statistics Office, Natl. Highway, Dumaguete City (for population information)

Local Government Unit of the town/municipality

An interview with a person who has personal experience of the city/town fiesta

5.      Once all information has been collected, as individuals you must sort through your collection, selecting the important stuff and discarding the rest. You will then begin the writing process. You need to convey the information you have collected in a persuasive manner. Persuasive language includes lots of detailed descriptions, action verbs, and imaginative phrases. For further examples of persuasive/or descriptive essays, you can refer to the following websites: http://www.exampleessays.com/ and http://www.essaysite.com/

6.      Once all information has been sorted and rough drafts have been written, your group needs to begin putting together the travel brochure. You can plan your site in a piece of paper first, then make use of the computer and design your webpage.

7.      Save your finished product in a diskette and be sure you have a back-up copy saved in another diskette and in the hard disk of your pc.

8.      Keep an individual journal to record as well as assess your progress and learning experiences derived from the webquest.

9.      Each group and its members must have a portfolio. Please refer to the checklist under evaluation to be guided on what is to be included in your portfolio.

Conclusion

Learning can be both fun and rewarding as it is no longer confined to the four walls of the classroom. The internet as well as the outside world can be a valuable tool in acquiring information quickly and successfully. By completing this webquest, you have worked well as a group in obtaining knowledge about your cultural heritage. You have honed your computer skills as well as improving your writing skills.

As what the good Lord says, "Well done my good and faithful servant!" Three cheers for a job well done!
