Nixon’s Hat

You don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.
      --Richard Nixon, 1962

I will resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow.
      --Richard Nixon, 1974

I like to imagine
that my hat
from the Nixon
Library and Birthplace
once sat
on Tricky Dick’s
gray head
as he traversed
 the golden shores
of San Clemente
In his baggy black trousers
With a metal detector,
jowls flashing in the sun
as he planned
his comeback,
his meeting with Elvis
unforgotten.
