An Old and Lonely Virgin

All the greatest poets wax
Poetic about sex,
Which is why
I will never be
One of the greatest poets.
The knowing touch
The longing looks
Belong to those
Who clasp hands in love knots
In shopping mall food courts
And make moony eyes
Across a large room.
One enchanted evening
You will meet a stranger
And I will be a table over
Waiting for my just desserts.
I will join a book club
And will knit and make things
To sell at church bazaars
And be the big unmarried aunt
Who hands out crisp new hundreds
At graduations and at Christmas.
I will write letters
To TV personalities
And frame the autographed response,
Bob Barker and Jay Leno
My two-D lovers behind glass.
I will die
An old and lonely virgin.
When asked about
My wedded status
I will lie.
