Fayette County was one of the  three original counties formed June 1, 1780. It was taken from Kentucky County, Virginia, which  was formed in 1776, by taking the entire Kentucky area away from Fincastle County, Virginia.
Lexington, the county  seat of Fayette County was established in 1781 and named by a group of hunters, for Lexington, Mass., where the first  battle of the Revolutionary War was fought.

Lexington is home to Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky, and has a population  of over 239,000 people. It is the second largest city in Kentucky.

Fayette County and its surrounding area has an abundance of historical attractions.  A researchers heaven with the Lexington Public Library's Kentucky Room,  and the William T. Young Library and the Margaret King Library on the campus of the University of Kentucky; an LDS Family History Center in Lexington, as well as the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, and the Kentucky History Center  located less than 25 miles away in Frankfort, Kentucky.
