Definition: Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a method of remotely storing and retrieving data using devices called RFID tags. An RFID tag is a small object, such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated into a product. RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver.

  • "a contactless data transfer on the physical basis of alternating electromagnetic fields"
  • RFID systems consists of a transponder and a mobile or stationary read/write device with antenna
  • Transponder consist of a microchip and an antenna in differently shaped housings (plastic, glass, coins, key rings, smart cards, smart labels etc.).
  • Transponder operate in different frequencies.
There is a difference in power supply for transponder:
    • active (with battery for an independent power supply)
    • passive (the power is supplied inductively from the read/write device)
