Definition: Radio frequency identification
(RFID) is a method of remotely storing and retrieving data
using devices called RFID tags. An RFID tag is a small object,
such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated
into a product. RFID tags contain antennas
to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries
from an RFID transceiver.
- "a contactless data transfer on the
physical basis of alternating electromagnetic fields"
- RFID systems consists of a transponder and
a mobile or stationary read/write device with antenna
- Transponder consist of a microchip and an
antenna in differently shaped housings (plastic, glass, coins,
key rings, smart cards, smart labels etc.).
- Transponder operate in different frequencies.
There is a difference in power supply for transponder:
- active (with battery for an independent
power supply)
- passive (the power is supplied inductively
from the read/write device)
