YEAR 9 -- SUMMER EXAMINATION
PREPARING FOR YEAR 9 HISTORY EXAMINATION
LENGTH OF PAPER : 1 hour
FORMAT OF THE PAPER : There will be TWO sections Section A will be on
Slavery and the Slave Trade; Section B will be on the First World War.
WHAT QUESTIONS DO I HAVE TO ANSWER? : In BOTH sections there will be TWO
questions, and you have to answer ONE of these; so you have to answer ONE
question (from a choice of TWO in Section A) AND ONE question (from a choice of
TWO in Section B).
HOW ARE THE QUESTIONS STRUCTURED? : Each question will follow the same
format:
(a)
You will be given about 4 sources relating to the theme being examined.
(b)
You will then have 4 questions to answer.
(c)
You will be expected to use the sources AND your own knowledge to answer
the questions.
EXAMPLE : You are given 4 sources about the Middle Passage. Source A
shows a map of the transportation of slaves to America from Africa; Source B
shows the city of Bristol with fine buildings and ships unloading sugar; Source
C is an account of a slaves experiences during the Middle Passage; Source D
shows a picture of a slave ship.
You are asked 4 questions:
(a)
Will focus on ONE of the sources and ask you to state what you can learn
from this source about the Middle Passage. You will be expected to look at the
source, and explain how this source helps you to understand the topic. What does
it tell you and what can you deduce (or infer) from this. For example, it may be
a picture of slaves being packed into a slave ship with little room for
movement. You can explain what it shows BUT also you can make a reasonable
deduction, e.g. the fact that the slaves are packed in as tightly as possible
suggests that the owners of the ship did not think of the slaves as human
beings, but saw them merely as goods to be sold, and wanted to pack in as many
as possible to make as much profit as they could.
(b)
The second question will ask you if one of the sources agrees with two
others, e.g. Does Source A support the views of sources B and C about conditions
on board a slave ship? To answer this question, you need to look at what they
have in common and over what they differ, so you look at Sources A and B and
assess similarities and differences, and then you look at sources A and C and do
the same. You then make a judgement, do they support each other strongly? Do
they disagree slightly?
(c)
The third question will ask you to look at 3 of the sources and to use
your own knowledge to answer a question. For example, Using Sources A, B AND D
and your own knowledge, do you agree that the most slaves were treated well on
the plantations? You look at the sources first and assess whether or not they
agree and how reliable they are. You bring in your own knowledge about the
plantations to assess whether the views expressed in the sources are correct or
not.
(d)
The fourth question will give you a statement, e.g. without the
involvement of black Africans themselves, the slave trade would never have been
as successful as it was. Using the sources and your own knowledge, how far do
you agree with this statement? To answer this, you need to look at the sources
and assess how far they support or refute this statement, and incorporate your
own knowledge to develop and add to the points made from the sources.
SO WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN?
You have to learn both topics SLAVERY and THE FIRST WORLD WAR
You will need to know the following:
