So,I wanted a way to express what my current favourite music is, without sounding arrogant (best albums) or too silly (favourite albums) - so instead i've taken the radio 2 challenge and gone for albums i would have to take with me if i was being deported to a desert island later today, with a cd player and a power socket... |

The Supernaturals - It doesn't matter anymore. I remember racing downtown after school one summer's day in U6th to get this CD. Shiny happy pop songs about heartbreak and being dumped really don't get any better than this... |

Low - Things we lost in the fire. This is another heartbreak album, whisper it quietly and don't smoke during the performance. Harmonies, strange tunings and songs about dinosaurs, whores and sunflowers. I challenge you to listen to this and not be moved... |

Camera Obscura - Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi One of the latest additions to my must have list. So the singer dates Stuart Murdoch from B&S, so you already know what they sound like, but they're so twee and sweet and when she sings "Do you wash your hair in honeydew?" you even forget how weird that is and take in the power of the metaphor. Yeah... |

Cake - Fashion Nugget Ok, so it's very 1996, but it really gets better with each listen. I guess there the kind of band you either love or hate, and for the last 5 years i've been loving them. Bonus marks for including the word "testicles" in a song. Not enough songs have testicles in them in my opinion... |

Kings of Convenience - Quiet is the New Loud So the new acoustic movement never caught on, but this album is so good and so quiet that it almost single-handedly justifies the existence of Norway. And they're possibly the best live band i've ever seen. And they're really cute and shy! These reviews have quite a homosexual flavour don't they? Oh... Blame Serge... |

Get Up Kids - Something to write home about This is pure emo and it rocks. More songs about being dumped (notice a pattern emerging here?) and not giving a shit. And the singer can't really sing, but tries his hardest. "A" for effort boys.... |

The Promise Ring - Very Emergency More emo-rock- singers who can't sing and loud guitars. I've really liked this album for a long time (2 years...) and it mentions both New York and New Jersey, so therefore i'd have to have it with me wherever i go! |

Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway New Jersey, indie, funny songs, americanisms - how could i not be sold? Actually i prefer the first album, but i couldn't find a picture of it. Oh well, perhaps i could sneak them both in. "Lead us not into Penn-Station" tee-hee... |

Belle and Sebastian -Tigermilk So how do you pick a fave B&S album? This album probably takes it for tweeness and boys wearing flares and tank-tops. And besides, i thought i was allowed another bed-wetting choice after all those loud ones.... |

The (now sadly defunct) Cosmic Rough Riders - Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine While i'm sure that Daniel Wylie's solo career will set the world on fire, this album is pure genius, with harmonies, big choruses and sunny summers days running the whole way though .(just don't mention they're scottish. or very ugly) |

Astrid - Strange Weather Lately Ok ok, so it's beyond a fetish, it's not even an obsession - it's more a way of life. This is simply my favourite album ever - nothing comes close, and almost everyone i've (grudgingly) leant it too agrees! You need to hear this album. Pure close-your-eyes, sing along, shake your head and forget about the bad times indie rock. Go buy it. Buy it now!! Buy it now damn you!!! "Kitchen TV's on so i can hear the sound...." Whatever - it makes sense!! |
