Bloodhounds are an ancient breed. Some historians believe there is evidence of ancestors as far back as 1000 BC. Romans recorded hounds found in Britain in 55BC. They were described as being unmatched in their scenting ability and perseverance.

Bloodhounds today are believed to be decended from hounds bred by Saint Hubert, the patron saint of dogs. St. Hubert Hounds were brought to Britain in 1066 AD, at the time of the Norman Invasion, where they were used in packs to hunt stags.

A sporting hound, blessed with the keenest sense of smell of any dog, the breed is best known as the legendary dog who tracks down fugitives from justice. Contrary to the myth, the bloodhound is a gentle creature who locates, but does not attack his quarry, hence his primary position as a Search and Rescue dog (primarily in the US). The name Bloodhound comes from the term "Blooded Hound" meaning that only nobility or "those of the blood" were allowed to own them.

When the forerunner of all national kennel organizations, The Kennel Club in England was formed in 1859, the bloodhound was included in the first roster of officially recognized breeds.
